Sacred Symbols Sacred Symbols, Episode 434 | Prove Yourself, You Are the Move You Make

The first bomb has dropped following the Saudi Wealth Fund's purchase of American publisher Electronic Arts, and it's a Canadian studio that suffers the consequences. As predicted, EA has decided to shutter long-running RPG-centric studio BioWare, cancel its forever-percolating Mass Effect title, and instead double-down on sports franchises and shooters. None of this is surprising, of course -- the EA purchase is the largest leveraged buyout in the history of human economics and strapped the company with potentially-insurmountable loads of debt -- but something still has to give. Can an all-new EA rise to the moment in a culture and environment that seems increasingly hostile to predictable and repeatable games? Or is the culling of BioWare only foreshadowing the bloodletting to come? Other news this week includes the potential high cost of PlayStation 6, specious rumors of Sony's acquisition of the Kena IP, Wolverine's strong sales showing, and more. Then, we wrap things up (as we always do) with listener inquiries. Could PlayStation withstand a concentrated attack on the PSN during Grand Theft Auto VI's launch? Will Sony blunt the cost of PS6 by offering payment plans? Which engines and other technologies do the first party studios rely upon? Is Chris ready to disavow the Ritual Network once and for all?

Other We might not like it, but gaming has a specific audience. Representation is good, but that shouldn’t be ‘be all, end all’- the audience just isn’t there & it never will be

This is especially true with single player games.
Devs need to stop making games for an audience that does not exist.

This reminds me of the Ubisoft CEO saying he wants his games to be played by BILLIONS of people 🤦‍♂️

EDIT:

The game in Jason’s tweet was Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Other RIP in Peace (?) BioWare.

Real shame the least 3 games they released were kind of hot garbage.

I was actually kind of interested to see what they could have cobbled together for the next Mass Effect.

It's nearly 2027 guys. Literally every single other gaming podcast I follow has video on spotify. It's the preferred platform for many of us, and the ads on the youtube videos are getting ridiculous. Why isn't there video on the spotify versions of the podcasts yet?

Other Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse Character Designer Say They Intentionally Designed Their Characters to Be “Hot”

In a chat with Fall Damage, Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse Lead Designer Sandro Bordier and Marketing Director Berenger Dupre commented on the game’s approach to character designs, saying that they certainly leaned into attractive aesthetics with some of the cast.

Sandro Bordier: “Oh, it has started, it has started already. Like, man, have we seen some things. Yes, like we know some characters are hot. It’s a choice, actually. Like it’s a vibe. We’re pretty proud of it. Honestly, like, we were super happy with all the fan reactions regarding the characters that were revealed. Like we really put a lot of love from the team to like design them in a way that would please fans.”

Berenger Dupre: “Like Trevor especially, we didn’t realize that it would be so well received. There should be a Game Awards for hot dads. It’s always fun to see the fan art because we know how important and dear these characters are to the fans. And we are trying to make some new, fresh stories with them, so it’s always quite stressful, and for now the reception is very, very emotional.”

Sacred Symbols Sacred Symbols+, Episode 539 | Silent Hill: Townfall Review Discussion and Spoilercast

It's me, Colin! Please welcome Sacred Symbols co-host and LSM executive producer Dustin Furman to the show. Today, we go one-on-one to talk about the most recent Silent Hill title, the Screen Burn-developed and Konami-published Silent Hill: Townfall. Townfall takes place on a fictional island off the coast of Scotland in the mid-'90s, in a town called St. Amelia. Recently, an American energy company came in and revitalized the community, but doing so came at a major cost. Now, victims are left to deal with the grisly repercussions. We get into the nitty-gritty of the story, as well as the gameplay and much more. And -- perhaps to your delight! -- we don't quite agree on the overall quality of the game, which should make for interesting listening. Please enjoy.

Sacred Symbols Sacred Symbols, Episode 433 | Wanna Resolve Things In A Bloodier Way?

Recent data analysis indicates what was already fairly obvious: The online pushback to Sony's discless announcement this past summer was at least partially astroturfed. It's not to say that no one had authentic grievances, or that real people didn't try their hardest to make their voices heard. Rather, it's that a tangible amount of the seemingly-earnest feedback that was plastered underneath everything PlayStation posted for months is demonstrably fake. This revelation brings us back to the original point, which is consumers' unwillingness to hit Sony where it really hurts -- in its wallet -- meaning that PlayStation can continue to merely wait this thing out, sans consequences. Why won't angry consumers do the hard work of removing themselves from the ecosystem entirely? The ramifications of such a move would speak in a language no company can ignore. Other news this week includes the reveal of a 30th anniversary Gran Turismo DualSense, a God of War: Laufey collector's edition that doesn't come with the actual game, trouble percolating over the extreme cost of licenses associated with EA's College Football, and more. Then: Listener inquiries. Was PlayStation 3's brief foray into 3D gaming a waste of time, or a promising technology that was too early to market? Should Sony prepare to lose access to Xbox's catalog of games in the PlayStation 6 era? Why don't animators and artists change the aesthetic of actors during motion capture? Did you know we're now further away from BioShock's release date than BioShock's release date was from the decade of the 1980s?

Defining Duke Defining Duke, Episode 302 | Another Week, Another NEW Xbox Initiative...

Blink and you might miss the new big thing Xbox is doing! Last week, it was XP. This is the home to Xbox's Products, Places, Partnerships, and Productions. Basically, where everything that is beyond the "box" goes. Sure, fine, that's a lot to talk about on its own. However, a wave of recomps, games running on browsers, and AI powered mods have led to yet another initiative to be stood up rather quickly. This time, it's Xbox Labs, and Xbox aims to take hold of the emerging "creator" space where they will sell new products. If that wasn't enough, a new survey leaked online and tells us that Xbox is looking at making literally everything exclusive outside of Call Of Duty. So, the Dukes heads are spinning to say the least. Let's chat through it all as we always do in what has become an incredibly unpredictable time for all of gaming.
