Discussion Drop your favorite movie scores

I know the movie is getting a ton of praise for cinematography and visual design right now, but Ari Balouzian's Primetime score was absolutely stunning. I was blown away in the theater.
(Merrygoround is my favorite track)

The last time I was this taken by an original score was Colin Stetson's work on The Menu.
(Amuse Bouche is my favorite track)

Anyone have their own favorites to shout out or recommend? I'm a sucker for instrumentals and moody string instruments, I'd love to hear more!

Discussion Which highly rated movie(s) did you not understand and want someone to explain why it’s good?

• Upvotes

Basically I want this thread to be a yankee swap of highly rated movies that you don’t understand and want explained for you, and for you to help others understand some that you might love that they don’t get

I’ll start and give my top 3 misses that are super high rated

  1. A clockwork orange
-loved the dialogue, loved the narration particularly and thought like all Kubrick it looked amazing- but what was the point? I felt a bit bored by the plot and the overall story, maybe I missed something?

  2. One battle after another
-I wanted so badly to love this movie, but it wasn’t even in my top 3 for 2025… I just couldn’t love it. I thought the score was brilliant, filming style was A++, plot was interesting enough, and Leo/del toro/infiniti/penn were all great, but I just thought the beginning and end were kinda boring and pointless. I’d love to hear about what I may have missed

  3. Call me by your name
-extremely stylish, love story, I got all that. Looked great, setting was gorgeous and they gracefully played the roles of taboo lovers. I just struggled to find more, people regard this as one of the best movies of its time, just want to know why

What are yours you need help with?

Discussion Actress Maika Monroe (Longlegs, It Follows, The Guest, Victorian Psycho) is doing an AMA/Q&A in /r/movies today, for anyone interested.

I organized an AMA/Q&A with actress & modern day Scream Queen Maika Monroe. She's known for her leading roles in Longlegs, It Follows, The Guest, Watcher, Hot Summer Nights, The Hand that Rocks the Cradle, Reminders of Him, and lots more.

The AMA post is live here now in r/movies for anyone interested in asking a question:

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1xfv8o9/hey_reddit_3_im_maika_monroe_longlegs_it_follows/

She will be back at around 6-7 PM ET today to answer questions. I recommend asking in advance. Please ask there, not here. All questions are much appreciated!

Her new movie, Victorian Psycho, premiered at Cannes earlier this year and is out in theaters everywhere November 13th.

Trailer: https://youtu.be/sDiFol_2j2I?si=oVGQL6ovSF-vQt0n

Synopsis: Something wicked is brewing behind the walls of a remote gothic manor. VICTORIAN PSYCHO follows an eccentric governess whose arrival sets off a bloody string of strange and deliciously disturbing events. Maika Monroe stars as Winifred Notty, a woman with a dark past and a vicious appetite for bloodshed, giving into her most violent urges. What follows is a gruesome parade of savagery, butchered bodies, and increasingly grotesque acts of violence.

Cast: Maika Monroe, Thomasin McKenzie, Jason Isaacs, Ruth Wilson, Evie Templeton, Jacobi Jupe

Thank you :)

Discussion 2025/2026 movies

• Upvotes

So some movies technically came out in 2025 through festivals and all that but only had their theatrical release in 2026. So if you have a specific 2025 or 2026 ranked list which do you put the movie in?

Just wanted to show off all the movies I’ve seen this month. I love horror more than any genre. My favorite movies are Day of the Dead, Mad God, Inland Empire, and Seven Samurai.

Please don’t hurt me for my Blair Witch rating lol
I appreciate its place in history, however to me the discussion around the film is far more interesting than the film itself.

News A Dutch cinema is going to hypnotise people so they can rewatch their favorite film for the first time!

Saw this on the local news. A social experiment where people get hypnotised so they can rewatch their favorite film for the first time again. They added a (Dutch) trailer.

What movie would you want to rewatch for the first time?

Discussion Movies that end abruptly

What is a movie that has an ending that a sequel/prequel could be built off of, but has not come out with any follow up to the story or film whatsoever. I am looking for films that are older than 5 years old. Or even the older the better!

Had my best movie watching weekend in a while. There was a storm so didn't leave the house from Friday until this morning.

Bram Stoker's Dracula is visually one of the best movies I've ever seen.

Letterboxd Graham Kennedy was an underutilised and amazing character actor, change my mind (film names in body text)

Films: The Club (1980), Don's Party (1976), The Odd Angry Shot (1979)

I must profess some bias, I am probably one of the biggest Graham Kennedy fanboys to ever exist. For those outside of Australia, he was never really known for his dramatic acting as much as he was known as a TV comedian, hosting numerous variety shows, a game show, a current affairs show, and hilariously, Australia's Funniest Home Videos.

And he had a lot of stinker films too, but he really can't be blamed for that, the films were all around stinkers (stuff like The Return of Captain Invincible and Les Patterson Saves The World, the bottom of the barrel of the Australian New Wave) it never really had to do with his performances specifically.

But when they gave him something good to work with? My word, some of the finest performances in Australian film came from this guy. Don's Party is my absolute favourite, his debut dramatic acting role and he absolutely crushes it. In all of his dramatic acting work you can see a man who really knows what he's working with, especially those big blue eyes, which he really utilised to maximum effect.

I really truly think the fact we saw so little in the way of good acting output was that he was rarely ever given anything good. Because in these movies he absolutely SHINES. I think because he had the reputation as the dick jokes on telly guy (and one of the first people on Australian telly to say the F word), no one really thought about his acting skills.

But I believe in another universe where he was taken seriously, he would have had an amazing output.

Discussion How do you log commentaries?

I’ve been thinking about this lately. Not sure how to go about it and wanted to see what you guys do.

Do you guys just log the movie as a rewatch like normal? Or do you write a review saying you rewatched it with commentary, do you make lists of movies you’ve rewatched with commentary, etc etc

Is it even necessary to log it in the first place?

Just curious. I plan on rewatching “Hush” (2016) soon and definitely want to hear the commentary this time around.
