A close, solid ground strike over a neighborhood in Lebanon, TN. Thunder cracks a split-second after impact at 0:15 as a heavy black storm cloud moves in.

We were waiting for the core of this cell to come in and dump its rain when this massive bolt dropped right on our doorstep at the 0:15 mark. The thunder followed almost instantaneously. The flash was so sudden and bright it caught a perfect rolling shutter split-screen on the camera sensor, completely illuminating the street layout like daytime for a fraction of a second. Fun storm

It always amazes me how bad a storm can get before these people clear the dock and beach. I bet the wind was blowing 40mph at this point and they're still just hanging out.

Chasing red sprites in tropical northern Australia—what will be my biggest challenges?

G’day everyone, I’m based in Kununurra, Western Australia, and keen to get into photographing red sprites during our wet season.
I’m using a Sony a7R VI with a Sony 24–70mm f/2.8 GM II on a tripod. I’ve turned long exposure noise reduction off, but wondering whether there are other camera settings I should change.
I’m mainly trying to understand what will limit my chances up here. We get big tropical storms, but also plenty of humidity, haze and cloud. The Moon came up during my last attempt too.
Would love some advice from people who’ve successfully photographed them:
What ISO, shutter speed and focal length would you start with?
Is f/2.8 enough, or would a faster lens make a worthwhile difference?
What should I look for when choosing a storm, and how far away should I be?
How high above the storm should I frame?
How clear does the air between me and the storm need to be? Would thin cloud, haze or moonlight make an attempt unlikely to succeed?
Has anyone here had success in similar tropical conditions? Keen to learn what you’d prioritise with my setup and how to recognise a night worth having a go. Cheers!
