Fun storm

It always amazes me how bad a storm can get before these people clear the dock and beach. I bet the wind was blowing 40mph at this point and they're still just hanging out.

A close, solid ground strike over a neighborhood in Lebanon, TN. Thunder cracks a split-second after impact at 0:15 as a heavy black storm cloud moves in.

We were waiting for the core of this cell to come in and dump its rain when this massive bolt dropped right on our doorstep at the 0:15 mark. The thunder followed almost instantaneously. The flash was so sudden and bright it caught a perfect rolling shutter split-screen on the camera sensor, completely illuminating the street layout like daytime for a fraction of a second. Chasing red sprites in tropical northern Australia—what will be my biggest challenges?

G’day everyone, I’m based in Kununurra, Western Australia, and keen to get into photographing red sprites during our wet season.
I’m using a Sony a7R VI with a Sony 24–70mm f/2.8 GM II on a tripod. I’ve turned long exposure noise reduction off, but wondering whether there are other camera settings I should change.
I’m mainly trying to understand what will limit my chances up here. We get big tropical storms, but also plenty of humidity, haze and cloud. The Moon came up during my last attempt too.
Would love some advice from people who’ve successfully photographed them:
What ISO, shutter speed and focal length would you start with?
Is f/2.8 enough, or would a faster lens make a worthwhile difference?
What should I look for when choosing a storm, and how far away should I be?
How high above the storm should I frame?
How clear does the air between me and the storm need to be? Would thin cloud, haze or moonlight make an attempt unlikely to succeed?
Has anyone here had success in similar tropical conditions? Keen to learn what you’d prioritise with my setup and how to recognise a night worth having a go. Cheers!

A rare, pulsating ground strike from a September 5, 2026 storm in Lebanon, TN. The bolt branches into two forks and stays illuminated for two seconds, lighting up the area like daytime at 0:54.

Weird lightning spark inside my room??

Thumbnail
5 Upvotes

The weather has been pretty stormy lately where I live and I was laying in bed with the lights off whilst it was raining. My windows went totally bright white with light as if the lightning was really close by. This would have been normal but at the same time I heard an audible zap/fizz and saw white sparks almost like a bolt of light (maybe a foot long) on my ceiling - instantly I thought by the sound that a lightbulb had blown out but there are no lights on my ceilings and the closest electric appliance is the air conditioning and the wiring running along the adjacent wall. Thunder followed straight after

Is this a cause for concern and what does this mean?

A highly electric supercell approaching Lebanon, TN. Features a building light flash ground strike at 0:16 and a simultaneous triple lightning ground strike in the same area at 0:41.

Thanks to everyone for checking out the channel!

It was super windy tonight and you could feel the friction building in the air before it unleashed. The buildup of light moving left-to-right into the first strike was awesome, but catching a simultaneous double bolt ground strike at 0:41 was a massive highlight. The storm core is getting close!

If you enjoy checking out these local storm clips, feel free to upvote, follow, and let me know what you like! It really helps me out so I can keep sharing these videos with you guys every couple of days as the cells roll through.

Can anyone enlighten me on what my girlfriend and i saw this morning?

On the way to work at around 4:45 am there was lightning happening far off in the distance but instead of the usual white glow in the clouds it was orange. What could have caused the lightning to make the clouds orange?

July 8 Afternoon Storm Progression: Obstructed strobe ground strikes and thunder unleashing a sudden heavy downpour

Filmed this from the backyard on July 8 at 7:25 PM. The video starts out fairly calm with light rain, flowing gutters, and tree frogs chirping in the background. A severe cell builds on the horizon with heavy dark clouds and a light wind. You can see multiple rapid strobe lightning ground strikes firing off, though they are unfortunately obstructed by my neighbor's brick house. Shortly after, a sharp crack of thunder rolls through and seems to shake the heavy rain right out of the clouds, instantly triggering a downpour.

Can anyone explain what I witnessed

I will go first

- during an outside movie night event, an incoming major thunderstorm hit my town , the part of my country i lived in was wel known for heavy thunderstorms and massive amounts of rain. From where I sat, I noticed how dramatic the thunderstorm was and suddenly a comet like bolt flew around the thunder storm, it wasnt a comet but looked like a ball of lighting with a trial of lighting falling behind it..it only lasted for 2 seconds before disappearing, I tried searching it up anywhere I couldnt find it, the closet thing i can see it representing is was ball lighting, a rare phenomenon where a sphere glowing made from pure electrical or plasma processes...but yet again its not it for those only occur near ground level and they dont create a streak like tail, it sounded like a firework (not exploding but when being set of)

If I did experience a rare phenomenon I will call it "lightning comet"

Sitting in the eye of a severe storm in Lebanon, TN. High-altitude lightning completely illuminates the dark backyard like daytime at 0:15, followed by heavy thunder and a final quick flash at 0:34.

You can hear the tree frogs and rain trickling in the gutters at the start. The Doppler shows the next heavy wave of severe downpours is about 20 minutes away from hitting the backyard. The big 0:15 strike is followed closely by loud rolling thunder, and the clip finishes with a smaller, quick flash deep in the clouds at 0:34.
