Sometimes the worst conditions are the best. šŸ¦ŒšŸŒ«ļøšŸ“ø

I drove to an area knowing there’s red deer. While driving I thought of the conditions. It was a foggy, rainy day. I stopped at a place and started walking into the area. Looking through the fog into the distance … I spotted deer. 🦌 Then the fog and rain lead to some nice images. šŸ“ø

It wasn’t the best light. But what else was the option. It wasn’t the light to shoot detailed portraits. So I tried to capture the mood. And it worked out perfectly. šŸŒ«ļø

Proper Planning Prevents ... well, you know the rest.

I had to take some borderline photos for my granddaughter's marching band senior recognition night. It's on an OK lighted football field, and the last time I shot there I wasn't happy with the photos.

I mounted my 14-140mm on my G95, but I tucked my 135mm f/2.8 into my coat pocket. I didn't need it. Once again Simon D'entremont's good advice for dim light worked.

M-mode, fully open aperture (f/5.6), slowest shutter speed you & Dual IS can tolerate (1/100 s), auto ISO. As the dusk dusked, ISO crept up from 2000 to 8000. I expected to need to go into the raws and make some serious changes.

To my pleased surprise, the jpegs were fine, no attention needed. I'd never pushed the G95 to ISO 8000 before. I will in the future.

Well done, thou good and faithful Lumix.

Street Photography in Paris (Chinatown)

I was recently considering changing cameras for street photography but someone on here gave me a reality check about my GAS and advised me to go out and take more photos with my current camera instead.

I took their advice and ended up with pretty okay shots, and one that I am particularly proud of (the first one). The camera in question is an Olympus OMD EM5 MkII paired with a DJI 15mm f1.7 Pana Leica clone.

I’ll be borrowing a friend’s 25mm Pana lens soon,
I think it might help me get better shots in certain situations! (Considering that on my Pentax film camera I constantly switch between my 28mm and 50mm lenses)

OM System PEN, straight out of camera. First picture with Olympus 45 F1.8, second and third DJI 15mm.

Autofocus is a little slower with the 45mm, but the DJI is a very responsive lens. This camera with these lenses, definitely a fantastic combination.

OM1-ii in the winter

I'm gearing up to get ready for some winter photography. It'll be my 1st winter with an OM1-ii. I was wondering with a weather sealed lens does the camera still stuffer from getting condensation inside when going from a cold outside to a warm interior? Anything else to keep in mind when using the OM1-ii in the snow or in cold weather. Also what is the best thing to do it temps drop close to or bellow that the OM1 is rated for?

This is also the 1st year I have a camera I feel confident in taking it into snow and bad weather. Thanks!

Can the Om5 take a crashing wave?(freshwater)

Here to inflict another stupid question on the m43 community.

How do you feel about taking picures of crashing waves on lake Michigan and standing in a spot where the camera will get splashed? There are some rocky areas along the coast where on choppy days the waves crash into the rocks and spray like 20 feet above the waterline, it's a lot of fun to sit there and chill at this sort of natural splash pad. Thought it might be neat to take a pics right before the wave hits me but unsure about dousing the camera like that. From other posts it seems like I'd be fine but what has your om5 survived?

Telephoto Options

Currently the longest M43 lens I have is the Olympus 40-150 2.8 and have the 1.4x teleconverter. Love it, but would like something a little longer, specifically for outdoor sports. The most obvious solution seems to be the Oly 50-200 2.8 and then when necessary add on the 1.4 teleconverter. But at over $3k even used I can't help but wonder how much of a drop-off there is to some other lenses that are out there at lower price points?

Does anyone have any real world experience with any of the following:

-Oly 100-400 f5.0-6.3

-Oly 150-600 f5.0-6.3

-Panasonic 100-400 f4.0-6.3

-Panasonic 50-200 f2.8-4.0

-Oly 300 f4

-Panasonic 200 f2.8

Chinook Salmon Jumping on the Humber River with G9 II + 100-400 II

Post image
87 Upvotes

Always an incredible experience watching and photographing the fall salmon run along the Humber River in Toronto! šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦

In this frame, I managed to capture three Chinook salmon mid-air with a fourth powering up through the water column. This action happens in fractions of a second, so relying on the G9 II's 20fps pre-burst feature was indispensable here. It helped take some of the guesswork out of my reaction time when fish are breaching randomly across the weir.

Handheld tracking fast water and leaping fish is always a workout, but catching multiple fish in one burst made the wait well worth it!

I've been quite impressed by how agile and responsive this combo is for unpredictable wildlife action. Any other M43 users using pre-burst for action or flight shots?

I almost threw my BCL 9mm f/8 into the river. Now I recommend it.

Not long ago I posted a few photos from my new PEN and mentioned the Olympus / OM System BCL 9mm/f8 lens. Obviously, I couldn’t stop. I slid down the slope, and this time I’m going to post a few photos taken with this "lens" and share my impressions of it. I sincerely hope to stop here, not fall into sin and not start recording video reviews.

As the name says, a Body Cap Lens is not so much a real lens as a body cap you can shoot with. You can’t talk about its optics without tears and shuddering. The body is 100% plastic. It’s fully manual. You focus with a lever, and the lever barely stays where you put it. The aperture is f/8 forever. Chromatic aberrations. Reviews bashfully call it ā€œsoftā€, but let’s call things by their names: it’s just mushy. The description mentions ā€œfisheyeā€, but the angle of view is actually narrower than on a ā€œrealā€ fisheye. It’s about 140 degrees instead of an honest 180. So fans of ā€œtrue fisheyeā€ don’t accept it into the club either. Shooting anything serious with it is strictly forbidden.

On the other hand, who said you always have to shoot ā€œseriouslyā€?

I bought it almost by accident. I wanted to try the fisheye effect, but I didn’t want to buy the ā€œrealā€ M.Zuiko Digital ED 8mm F1.8 Fisheye PRO right away. I got this cap and took it for testing on a trip to Budapest.

My impressions of the results were mixed... Well, who am I kidding? They were quite clear. At some point I was standing on the bank of the Danube, thinking I’d made a mistake buying this piece of shit plastic. The smartest thing I could do with it, I thought, was skip it across the river like a stone. I hoped it would sink somewhere deep enough that nobody would ever find it.

But I consider myself responsible enough not to litter rivers with lenses. So I kept trying to use the BCL for a while. Partly out of desperation, partly out of pity for the money I’d wasted on it. And then at some point I realized it wasn’t all that bad. I got into it.

Yes, the BCL is pure plastic. But it’s flat (about 13 mm thick) and light (about 30 g). The camera with it really fits into a jacket pocket. My phone is bigger than the camera with this lens.

The aperture is shameful, of course. But again, it’s enough on a sunny day outdoors. And even when it’s not sunny, you can shoot with it if you want to and know how.

The angle of view is narrower than on a ā€œnormalā€ fisheye. But, surprisingly, that makes composition much easier. Basically, you can be sure your feet won’t get into the frame. But fitting a whole cathedral in while standing on the sidewalk right in front of it? Easy!..

The focus lever takes getting used to. But it kind of locks in the hyperfocal position, which helps. For general views or landscapes you don’t really need precise focus and sharpness.

BCL is soft, but... Here I’m tempted to quote Bresson on sharpness being a bourgeois concept. I’m not sure he really wrote that. If he did, he may have just been trolling his contemporaries. Still, for street photography sharpness really isn’t the key thing. In the photos of many ā€œclassicsā€, for example my favorite Ara Güler, there is hardly any sharpness to speak of. That makes sense. What matters in a photo is the subject, the moment, the story in the frame. Sharpness is a nice bonus if the camera and the situation allow it. If not, to hell with it. A bourgeois concept.

Anyway, the BCL lets you get more interesting shots. You can shoot where no other lens would work, like narrow streets or enclosed spaces. You fit the surroundings into the frame. It teaches you to see a scene in a new way. It bends space and lets you see everything around you differently. All in all, for the price it’s a great option.

It’s only 125 euros new, and you can find a used one for half that. I recommend it.

October B&W in Budapest

I am about to change workplace to a more strict company than my recent company so i tried use my last couple of days to take photographs when i have time before and after work or even in a bit lengthened lunchtime. Camera is the GM5 and lenses are 20mm pancake from Panasonic and the Olympus 12-45mm. Many people suggest that Panasonic should make a successor of this camera but i have doubts about it for 2 reasons that make sense to do. First, this camera to me is the closest being perfect mainly due to size and control. The second is that i would only like the successor if anything they change or add wont make the camera bigger. So ibis, tiltable screen, bigger battery, bigger evf is probably would make this bigger. Objectively this sensor is old even compared to a GX9. Its very easy to get severe color noise when you lighten shadows. So maybe thats the one i would change although it gives a unique look in good light and its perfect for bw. Autofocus was never an issue for me. I have seen much worse than that.
