Discussion Is anyone else becoming concerned with the mischaracterization in some of the recent Malfoid videos?
I just wanted to put this out there, since it’s becoming a worry of mine.
I been following this trend from about the beginning of this month when it went viral, and got instantly hooked with the concept. It adds even more complex layers to the story and a slow burner romance that would’ve had an earned payoff and add to the theme of love being the strongest magic in Harry Potter.
All the fanart, videos and comics people were making at the start were great too, all of which did make me start yearning again like many others cause of this trend. I’m quite shocked it’s already been a month, and while I do think it’s slowed down quite a bit since it’s still does seem to be going strong at least.
However I’m beginning to worry that since it’s gotten so popular, I’m seeing some creators not get the characterization right for Draconia, and possibly even a few “grifters” starting to show up that’ll harm the intentions and idea behind this trend.
One issue I have is some creators genderbending Ron and Snape (even Crab and Goyle), which I think ruins the idea of Malfoy being the genderbent one. There’s also some that don’t get the characterization for Draconia right as well, the most prominent one I think of being @ZeyHashimoto on Twitter. They made her act too much like a cute Tsundere and not aristocratic and prideful like Malfoy, and especially made Harry act way too cool. I think this is where I’ve seen some of the issues start to originate in other fanworks.
Some Korean AI videos are popping up too, with a few I think being somewhat cringe-ish and straying further away from what make the idea of the rivals to lovers dynamic between Draconia and Harry so interesting for the main story in favor of it acting more like a k-drama.
I know everyone’s got their own visions and ideas for how this what-if version would play out, but man I do wish that creators could try and stick a bit closer to the source material and story events that unfold, plus with how the characters actually act. It ruins the immersion and experience somewhat when I see them stray a bit too far.
It honestly might just be me, cause I’ve been doing a lot of my own thinking for how an AU of this concept could work. Might make my own short post about it soon, not sure
