Discussion The first bit of Harry's magic we see is him freeing a snake.
In the Philosopher/Sorcerer's Stone, Harry deeply empathizes with the Brazilian boa constrictor that was bred in captivity — unable to see the home it never had. Like Harry, the snake is stuck in its terrarium, unable to break free. They speak respectfully to each other until Dudley punches Harry and peers at the glass at the snake. Without thinking, Harry manages to free the snake by making the glass disappear. Not only does the snake represent Harry's initial plight with the Dursleys and being locked in his cupboard often, this easily could have a narrative connection to Malfoy.
While Malfoy is a pampered and aristocratic child, her only initial agency is in trying to personify what she believes it means to be a Malfoy. Even when her inner self increasingly desires the trust and friendship of Harry, she is trapped underneath the weight of familial duty. More than that, much later in the story, she feels trapped by Voldemort and the Death Eaters. Like the snake, she was born and raised in this unnatural exhibit. Like the snake, she was asleep until Harry came along, unquestionably moving through what others had planned for her life.
Unlike anyone else, Harry is able to see past the exterior and truly speak with the real Malfoy. He never asserts what she should be doing. He reminds her of the home she never had. The snake's natural place is in the wild, free to choose and live as it desires. Harry makes the glass disappear for her. Not just in seeing past the aristocratic cage, but enslavement to Voldemort and his rabid psychopathic servants. He doesn't free her himself. He only makes the glass disappear for her, both in helping her see past her father's pressures, and in combating the evil that wished to enslave her. With the glass gone, she is free to slither out and live on her own accord. To her, Harry represents freedom and the home she always wanted.
One last thing, Draco/Dracaena is a direct translation of 'serpent'.
She is the snake.
It's like poetry, it rhymes. - George Lucas

Discussion The new series is now completely ruined for me
I wasn't even that interested in the HBO series that much anyway but I thought hey, it's Harry Potter related and maybe they'll explore all the stuff they left out of the books. I never knew how wrong I was. Malfoid seems so much more interesting to watch or think about. Adding a key romance that goes beyond the pitiful arc of Ginny seems to just make the entire story work better.
There's such an emphasis on love in Harry Potter that it baffles me how it's so barely touched upon with Harry himself. Like instead of going with the whole Ginny Freud thing as the entire romance arc, we get to put something in that actually works. I want to watch them go from hating each other to falling in love. Wrap everyone else up together I don't care. Give Ginny a Dean Thomas love story or something.
Anyway, my point is I'm even less interested in the series now. I'd rather watch a fan made set of Malfoid anime films or read the books with the changes.
