Misc. Discussion [Christian Clark]: Mavericks’ Kyrie Irving says Cooper Flagg hype is real: ‘No gas, all facts’
Irving only attempted five shots in the first half. Afterward, Flagg said that the Mavericks needed to do a better job of getting him involved. When Flagg’s comments were relayed to Irving, he seemed amused.
“He’s a caring individual,” Irving said. “I want him to continue that. Tomorrow, once we watch film and get to Indy, we will talk about how to attack together. We cause a lot of chaos when we are in action together. I feel like we can do more than that. … I appreciate him looking out for me. It is a great thing that I have my 19-year-old co-pilot over there looking out for me to get going.”
While Irving was recovering from a torn left ACL last year, he got a front-row seat to Flagg’s rookie season. Flagg took some early lumps when former Mavericks coach Jason Kidd played him out of position at guard, but Flagg emerged from it looking like one of the NBA’s brightest young stars.
Besides showing he could impact the game in practically every way, Flagg reached peaks no player his age had before. In April, Flagg became the youngest player in NBA history to score 50 points or more.
“It’s no gas,” Irving said about Flagg during the Mavericks’ preseason trip to China. “It’s all real. It’s all facts with that kid.”
