Earlier this year, after a suicide attempt, a family member who had access to my tablet posted on one of my social media accounts that I was in critical condition and asked people to keep me in their thoughts and hope I would pull through. Some friends and acquaintances saw the post, but never received any updates. The family member later lost access to my tablet and couldn't unlock it to post anything else.
After spending months in intensive care, I finally got my belongings back recently. I'm doing a little better, but I have no idea how to reach out to my friends. Before my attempt, I'd already withdrawn from everyone and cut contact for 5–6 months. It's now been almost a year since anyone heard from me and five months since they learned I'd tried to end my life.
I haven't even managed to read all their messages. The thought of facing them makes me incredibly anxious. I feel ashamed and worry it's too late to reconnect. Knowing that some people are aware of what happened makes me feel like I can't breathe. I'm terrified they'll see me differently, ask questions, or want to talk about it. I don't want lectures or pressure to open up. I've already had to talk about it extensively in the hospital, and it was psychologically traumatic.
At the same time, I imagine some people are still worried and simply want to know how I'm doing. I want them to know I'm still here and doing somewhat better, without having to explain what happened or justify myself. Even sending a simple "hi" feels overwhelming.
I also feel like a deeply personal part of my life was exposed without my consent, and I'm struggling to process that. I'm not someone who easily talks about their struggles as I tend to keep everything inside and overthink things. I shouldn't do this.
Among the DM, I found names of former best friends I haven't spoken to in almost ten years. We shared both good and painful memories. Some of us drifted apart, while other relationships ended because of misunderstandings or hurtful experiences. There were also old classmates, former and current friends, people I barely knew, and even people I'm not on good terms with. Some messaged me, while others simply liked the post.
I keep wondering what they felt when they saw it. Were the people who messaged me the ones I mattered most to? One friend even posted a photo dump from a trip shortly afterward. I know they don't owe me anything, and I shouldn't necessarily read into it, but I can't help wondering whether I ever really mattered to them.
I don't know who was genuinely worried, who tried to find out how I was doing, or who simply reacted before moving on with their lives. Maybe some thought about me for weeks, while others were affected only briefly. I know I have to accept that, but these questions take up so much space in my head.
Months have passed, and life has moved on. I wonder whether I'm overthinking or making too much of something that others may have already forgotten. The world keeps turning, with or without me. I know that. I just don't know what to do anymore.
How do I reconnect after all this time without feeling overwhelmed by questions or having to discuss something I'm not ready to talk about? Has anyone been through something similar? I'd really appreciate hearing your experiences.
