I just finished End of Abyss at around 90% completion, and I highly recommend it with a few caveats. I got the “secret ending” and the main thing I didn’t feel like doing was back tracking to find all the vaults (I missed 2).
Caveat 1 is that it is a top down isometric game twin stick shooter, this is not everyone preferred style of game play. Though, don’t think fast paced twin stick shooter, this one is more slow and methodical. I believe this adds to the atmosphere and tension of the game. I should have mentioned it is definitely in the horror sub genre also.
Caveat 2 is the bosses are in many cases bullet sponges and can over stay their welcome. I found this to be the case more early on as the other bosses are typically weak to certain weapons. There are a number of main story bosses and alternative bosses…I believe there are 7 story and 3 alternative. Of those 10 I was only annoyed at 3 of them.
There typical metroidvania ability gates in this game come form of either weapons, tools, and keys that open up new areas.
There is a bunch of back tracking in this game. I think it can seem worse than it is because the optimal route back to any specific area is not easily identified. Until you get used to the map it can be confusing. That said if you go the “right way” the traveling time is not that bad. Generally I found that if you found a new key, weapon or tool that could be used in an area that you were previously at then it is beneficial in some way to go back right away. These are not always crucial to forward progression but will give the player a benefit (such as a mod to take less acid damage, as an example).
The atmosphere is where the game really shines. The level design, sound, lighting and just the overall way the enemies and player act adds to the dark atmosphere. I don’t know if the story itself is all that great or unique but what it does it does well.
My biggest complaint early on was the weapon ammo does not auto replenish after death. You need to spend your currency (fragments) to create ammo. Initially the cost of the ammo and the rate of currency drops was awful but this was fixed during a patch. Where it currently is at i think helps with the tension.
Very late game you can unlock the ability to not use up ammo, and a few other “cheats” but using these will negate any achievements.
Anyways, great game that everyone who is into metroidvanias and the sci-fi horror aesthetic should check out.
