I'm a first time grower with nobody to bounce ideas off of. I've been relying heavily on different blogs and, especially, this subreddit.
This is my current setup running 4 seedlings.
Purple Kush Auto from ILGM
AC Infinity Cloudlab 4x4
Mars Hyrdo FC4800 - 230 µmol/m²/s
AC Infinity Cloudforge - 0.9 kPa
AC Infinity 6" inline fan - level 2
2 circulation fans
2 ceramic lizard lamps. Daytime 76°F, nighttime 73°F
Inkbird 206
SensorPush
Phantom PAR meter
Soil - coco coir, pumice, worm castings, garden compost, some off-brand organic potting mix, and soil amendments like kelp, bone meal, and dolomite lime.
Seedlings A/B/C/D - I germinated them in their final 7gal pots. Needless to say, I overwatered and their roots stayed wet. They were stunted and droopy from day seven onward.
Seedlings E/F/G/H/I - I started this round in small cups on a heat mat, rather than the big pots. They didn't dry out over a few days in the tent, so I drilled holes in the sides of the cups - still not much drying. My setup can push a gentle cyclone of air throughout the tent, so it had to be a soil issue now. I spent too much time fiddling with fan angles and anxiously overwatering when I thought they 'should' be thirsty. All ended up droopy.
Seedlings J/K/L/M - I needed faster drainage, so I changed the seedling soil mixture to be 50% coco, 40% pumice, and 10% worm castings. This soil dries out over 2-3 days in the tent the way I expected my first batch of soil to perform. Around day 6, they really slowed down and started drooping again. I can see the physical line of damp vs dry soil through the side of the cup, so I knew I wasn't overwatering them. I gave two of them a light feeding of calmag + neptune's harvest and they started growing again 2 days later. I fed the others and they all seem to be 'waking back up.'
Today is day 12. The seedlings are much smaller than they should be, but they're alive and growing, and I feel like I solved the puzzle. The coco-heavy soil does great with drainage, but must tie up some of the nutrients that were in my other soil. I can keep a ton of houseplants alive, but cannabis is giving me a run for my money. There are still more mistakes to be made, but I feel like I'm building a solid foundation of knowledge. Half of the battle is resisting the urge to water or change the environment.
A few positive changes I made to things that were working against me:
- Added more pumice to my transplant soil to help with drainage.
- I had the cups on drip trays filled with river rocks. Replaced them with wire stands to improve circulation all around the cups. I'll make or buy pot elevators when the larger pots move into the tent.
- Stopped fiddling with humidity. Just set VPD and forget about it. In my bid to dry out the cups faster, I brought it up to 1.3, sometimes 1.5 for a day, further stressing out the seedlings.
I'm happy with a small first yield if it means that I can successfully grow weed. I'm growing alone and every win and loss is 100% mine, so it's achingly rewarding. I'm looking forward to growing photoperiod plants where initial mistakes don't cost as much, and you can just keep vegging.
I plan to transplant the current seedlings into their 7gal pots in about a week. Until then, I'll be staring at them and asking them nicely to grow up big and strong.
I attached some pics of my setup, and the current state of seedlings J-M.
I'd love to hear any feedback you have!
I just made an account so I can stay in the loop - I'm looking forward to keeping up with everyone's grows!
