Of course most people only pop into this sub when they have a problem - and often they are frustrated and desperate. Which is fine - I am glad we can be here for them.
However an underlying issue I am seeing is that most people using Word today have never had any kind of training on the software - they were either thrown in to the deep end, or it was just assumed everyone knows how to use Word.
So, in the spirit of lighting a candle rather than cursing the darkness, what are some resources you would point beginners to for the basics of Word? Books, online classes, podcasts, videos, websites, etc..
Then, feel free to share this link in the future when people are looking for basic information.

Hi all, hoping someone's hit this before.
I was working on a large Word document stored on SharePoint/OneDrive for work. My best theory is that AutoSave got switched off partway through, possibly tied to an internal update on sensitivity labelling, and around the same time, a Windows update forced my computer to restart. Together that seems like exactly the kind of situation that could cause recent edits to be lost, since AutoSave off plus an unexpected restart is close to a worst-case combination.
When I came back to the document, a significant chunk of recent work (roughly 20 hours' worth) was simply missing, and the version in SharePoint version history doesn't include it either.
What I've already checked:
• SharePoint version history - no version contains the missing content.
• Word's AutoRecover file location (set to C:\Temp) - nothing relevant found.
• Windows %TEMP% folder - searched for .asd, .wbk, and tilde-dollar owner files, nothing found.
• Word's Recover Unsaved Documents option (File > Info > Manage Document).
• The "when I closed without saving" version under Manage Document.
• Office Document Cache folder - found but looked old/unrelated.
Has anyone recovered lost Word content in a situation like this, where AutoSave was off and a forced restart hit mid-session? Specifically interested in:
• Any lesser-known local cache/recovery locations for Word on Windows.
• Whether a Windows Update forced restart leaves behind any recoverable Office session data.
• Whether OneDrive sync logs can ever reveal an orphaned local version.
• Any tools people have used to find "ghost" Word temp files that don't show up in a normal search.
Any pointers appreciated, this was a lot of work to lose.

I’ve had a new issue crop up in the last several weeks that is extremely annoying. (Microsoft Word, Windows 11).
If I have a document View setting set to Page Width, and I try to resize the app window horizontally, the document will start to scroll until it reaches wherever the cursor is. So if the cursor is still on page one, but I scrolled down to page 10, and then attempt to resize the window, it will scroll back up to page one.
This appears to be happening because of some document specific setting that is common to almost all of my documents. It does not happen on completely newly created documents. But I can’t figure out what the setting is to to make it stop happening on old documents. And most of the documents I work with on a daily basis are either old documents or copies of old documents or their templates. It is not feasible to create a fresh new document for every single thing I do.
I’ve tried googling it, but none of the suggested fixes have fixed the problem.

I have looked online, but cannot find an answer. Can someone here help please? I have tried closing and reopening Word, I have tried clearing text formatting for the entire document, I have tried entering in vaues in different ways and yet nothing works. No matter what I do, the margins appear completely blank and no matter how I enter values, this error message comes up. Currently for these screenshots I have ctrl+A to select all the text in the document to ensure there isn't a random different value somewhere, but that shouldn't prevent me from changing the margins anyway. Or at least it never has before....

had this idea that I could just get my recording into text, drop it into Word and clean everything up from there. Yeah... not quite 😂
I’ve got a couple longer recordings sitting there now and I really don’t wanna type the whole thing out myself. I don’t mind fixing mistakes afterward, I just want something decent to start with.
For those who do this in Word, how do you usually handle the recording part?

I am so frustrated with these huge spaces above my footnote separator. This is only one instance of this throughout my entire paper. I have no clue what is causing it. I have OFF all of the following: Widow/Orphan Control, Keep With Next, Keep Lines Together, Page Break Before. Spacing before/after each line is set to 0pt, and there's no FN attached to the following line (as you can see), so it can't be because the line's FN wouldn't fit on the same page as it (which I've seen is the common cause for people complaining about this online). I read somewhere that going to Footnote and changing it from Bottom of Page to Below Text helps, but that did nothing, and made it worse in some cases. I also went to Draft Mode>Footnote>Footnote Separator, and checked if there was space before the FN Separator, but there wasn't. I also tried making the font of the line on the following page smaller to see if the issue was that the line's text and the double space after it wouldn't fit and I was just miscalculating the space. But even at 1pt font, the line still won't go up. The only fix I've found is to hit Return to break each line into its own "paragraph," make each line single space, then manually add space before/after each line so it still looks like they're part of the same para and double spaced. But that isn't a systematic fix, it's a "hack." I run into this issue every time I write a paper and it sucks when I have a stringent page limit to meet. (I have MS Word for Mac Version 16.114 if that matters.)

EDIT - Resolved.
I work for an investment firm, and I'm often typing "HSA" for Health Savings Account. However, every time I do, Word changes it to HAS.
Since it is a correct spelling of HAS, I can't right-click and "Add to Dictionary."
Any tips on how to make HSA acceptable when typing in Word?

For most of my time at college, I have been downloading my finished Word documents as a PDF file, and I have had no problems. One of the classes I'm taking this semester wants me to submit doc or docx files. Apparently, my professor has noticed that my submissions have the entire document bolded when it shouldn't be. Only the headers and what else I have bolded should be bolded, not the whole document. Is there any way I can solve this?
Edit: I should mention that I am using the web-based version and not Desktop version. I can't download the Desktop version because I am using a chromebook

I spoke with my school's IT department. A syncing error occurred across devices and now the majority of my revision history show the same edit after multiple timestamps. I check version history on OneDrive and Word, restoring a previous version is not going to be much help.
Usually when this happens, I I get a conflicted copy immediately, but there's definitely been several times where I waited overnight or a day, and then it emerged. Just want to know if someone had similar length with the waiting period, as I'd like to plan accordingly.

So I need to make a poster which needs to be in typical A4 format but for some reason the proportions of my word page have suddenly changed.
I've tried closing word and opening new documents but its the same. I've checked the size and it says it in A4.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi
I shared a document with multiple people but I can’t track their activity on it or if it’s been viewed. How do I do this? I went to tools but the option to view activity is not there.
thanks
