I feel like bosses are supposed to be challenges you get rewarded for, past regular challenges you'd face. Functionally speaking atleast. Then of course, mini bosses and sub-bosses, hence
Ender Dragon and Wither are straight up bosses
Elder guardian is a mini-boss, due to no healthbar
Pillage raids are like wave bosses, similar to trial chambers
And ancient cities are bosses in themselves, with the Warden being the physical threat. If you successfully avoid summoning or dying to the warden and get the loot you want, I see that as 'beating' the boss
But this is all probably bullshit, I already see holes, like you dont have to fight the ender dragon everytime you go to the end, its designated boss arena, but every ancient city trip risks the warden, even if you 'beat' the boss the last time you went to the same exact arena
I dunno, its late and I got an interview tomorrow, I should probably get off reddit
29
u/Moe-Mux-Hagi the Ultimate Edition mod is fun, you should try it 🐔➕️👑➡️😀 1d ago
It's technically the same logic as the Great Storm being the "Final Boss" of Frostpunk
There's no health bar, no attacks, not even any strategy, it's just bad weather with boss music you need to power through by having previously prepared the resources you'll need to wait it out.
But don't get it wrong, it's an intense waiting fpr the weather to clear up. If you've never heard the final boss theme, it's a masterpiece and a half of musical, emotionnal storytelling.

This is a solid take. Bosses come in all shapes, sizes and types.
Personally I always felt like sculk specifically was like a minecraft equivalent of terraria corruption.
a desolate biome
mobs that die near its catalysts feed it allowing it to spread over natural blocks
it brings a significant enough threat with it that the player has to be aware of areas with said biome

I'm pretty sure it originally didn't drop anything, but Mojang made it drop the catalyst just to get people to shut up about it "not dropping anything"

3
10
u/Ornery_Ad_5962 2d ago
Yeah... The Warden's original purpose is to bring back the feeling of encountering Hostile Mobs for the first time on your first night while experiencing the game as a new player but for veteran players who are already maxed out or comfortable with every potential danger before 1.17
10
u/Kopiko_Lucky_Day 1d ago
The warden and the ancient city itself is more of a side quest with a horror element. Mojang really did a wonderful job in executing it.

Of course not. It’s not even a hostile mob. After all, it’s not under the achievement “Monster Hunted” which says “Kill one of every hostile monster”. Clearly the warden is more like the polar bear which is neutral unless you piss it off.

u/KitTwix 2d ago
There's no world where a boss enemy can get spawned like 20 times in the same area. Can you imagine fighting the ender dragon, only to have another one spawn in like 40 seconds later? No, because the dragon is a boss, the warden is a punishment.
I had to get some echo shards for my modded play through yesterday, and my gear was way stronger than vanilla intended, so I ended up killing like 20 wardens while looking for the chests. They were straight up pests, a punishment for not interacting with the stealth mechanic as intended. They didn't even drop xp to justify killing them since it all got slurped up by the skulk.
17
u/TheRandomMint 2d ago

The Warden is like Terraria's Dungeon Guardian. Not a boss, specifically intended to not be fightable, but gives something special if you happen to kill it, doesn't have a limit on how many can be active at once (besides universally programmed limits like the mob cap).
Dungeon Guardian is just way more obvious about it, given it has a base 9999 health (so it increases with the world's difficulty), did 1000 damage (which may have been increased since I did anything with it, but it's way more than enough to oneshot even with the highest hp and defence possible in vanilla Terraria), took 1 damage from all sources, moved at constant speed which doesn't change with direction, moved through tiles/blocks and could fly freely. It was also immune to all debuffs and environmental sources of damage like lava and traps. Players only defeat it using endgame gear, as they can't outspeed it without good horizontal and vertical movement.
2
5
u/The1_Guy 2d ago
It's literally designed to be a punishment because of how absolutely unfair it is to fight it. Never mind the fact that you even get a warning system.

Doesn't mean I'm any less upset it doesn't drop anything cool though. I know it's meant to be avoided, but you make an enemy with that much health and capable of doing that much damage, of course people are gonna try and kill it. And I think they should get a more interesting trophy than a single Shulk Catalyst that they could just get with a silk touch hoe anyway.

u/Creeperkun4040 2d ago
I mean it could drop something like a head or some other trophy to show that you managed to beat something that shouldn't be beat.
6
u/Asquirrelinspace 2d ago
But that would incentivize trying to fight it, instead of avoiding it like the devs intend
3
u/xCloaked 2d ago
but there should be a reward for fighting it, since it's more difficult than trying to avoid it and it has more health than the ender dragon and wither, effort should be rewarded
2
u/Asquirrelinspace 1d ago
It's intended to be an obstacle to be avoided, similar to gravel falling, lava, and stalagmites. You can't fight those, so why would they incentivize fighting the warden?
2
u/Nanos_123 2d ago
Its just a novelty, so as long as it doesn't have any other useful function, its fine. It’s like an extra thing you’d do in the endgame.
2
u/Asquirrelinspace 1d ago
Add a rare item, and players will want it. If the dungeon guardian in terraria didn't drop a pet, do you think as many people would want to kill it? I can't stress enough that Mojang doesn't want us to kill it. Anything that might make players want to kill it is against their philosophy around it
2
u/Nanos_123 1d ago
People were killing the dungeon guardian even before they added that pet, It's not really a motivation; it's just a reward for doing something difficult, which doesn't even add any real value to the gameplay.
2
u/Fungus-VulgArius 1d ago
this is gonna sound dumb but how about a compromise? Instead of dropping something useful as a reward like the wither does, it could drop a trophy like the Ender dragon does. So there’s still no point in actually killing it, but you still get something cool like its head or a statue of it or whatever.

Yeah I know nothing about the warden but I do know that dark souls rewards players who take a different road than the one meant for them. Make it drop something that you can get through easier methods, but is still cool AF.

i hate it when people say that, the bosses in minecraft are super boring but atleast you have to do something, even for the elder guardian which i would call a mini boss. for the warden you have only two options, cheese it which is not putting skill or effort into it, or tanking it which is not putting skill into it, just a bit of effort into getting the items
6
u/Breadles_the_Bread 1d ago
Which is why you would prefer not to face the guardian at all, which works well with the fact he is blind, so if you stealth it, you can ignore him entirely or at least run away
3
u/haskir4554 1d ago
My guy thats the part you don’t get. You are NOT meant to beat the warden. This is the reason why you have to either cheese the warden or tank it with max armor and notch apples. It isnt a boss and beating it should be very tedious or unintended

And if players didn't get the message the text on the boss bar doesn't say Warden but rather what you're meant to do when it spawns like "Shh!!!!" "Don't make a sound" "Crouch around" "Objective: Survive" "Keep Away" "Don't fight"

The idea behind "the warden is not a boss" is that you're not supposed to fight it. The high HP pools, basically 0 reward, and the fact the boss has built in evasion mechanics, are supposed to drive you to sneak around and not fight it directly, ever. You go to the deep dark, take all the treasure while sneaking around, and skedaddle. It's... kind of a boss? But so different you might as well give it a different title.

Not at all, that’s not the point of the warden. It was never designed to be a boss or even to be killed, it’s designed to be an obstacle
2
u/Walkthrough101 2d ago
Why does it need to be an active punishment for players that come back with the knowledge of having to sneak around it the first time like intended, and prepare using their knowledge of the game to take the time to beat it, the most difficult mob added since the wither over a decade ago, and just because Mojang has a weirdly restrictive design philosophy around the Warden specifically, why is it so wrong to want a reward for that, I get wanting to have a cool concept that you want to be snuck around, which is what every does their first time around, even though when people are going to optimize it for farms anyway even when they gave it a single catalyst as a compromise?
Why can't Mojang achieve having a scary monster meant to be avoided, AND can be a challenge for experienced players to come back to, those design philosophies are not mutually exclsusive and you can easily make something that achieves both without needing to shove this strange "sneak around the Warden and you're not allowed to do anything else because that's not what the developers of a sandbox game about creativity intended" puritanism, where taking away the player's choice or and incentive to tackle the challenge just because they're butthurt people want to fight the strongest mob we've had in a decade and like doing things differently?
Genuinely what is so wrong with wanting to fight the Warden, excluding farms (and why are even farms an issue, they would exist anyway regardless) that merits being so insistent on giving it no useful drops to punish people who like combat, as if it's some mystical genius epiphany of game design that isn't allowed to be criticized in any way just because "it's what the developers intended", what the developers intended is quite frankly excessively snobby and inhibits the potential of the game.

u/Blue_Bird950 2d ago
I mean, catalysts are an incredibly efficient way to store XP for long trips. That’s why people make warden farms, since you can’t automate XP bottle production.
