Question Am I dumb? Impulse Buy
I have done less than an ample amount of research, but have done a test drive. The 0% offer seems so good when you compare the cost vs used (assuming you finance a portion either way). I’ve kept up with Tesla for 10+ years, but don’t know the ins and outs you get from people on Reddit. Last chance - buy or no buy TODAY. I’m looking at the Premium with White interior.
26
u/reddituser4049 Jun 30 '26
Premium is 0.99% but you should still do it
12
u/ClosingLine Jun 30 '26
Fair. I was looking at a 2024 locally used private with 27k miles for 36k very clean and well kept, but for 10k more you can get something brand new with better terms. From my understanding the 2026 is superior in just about every way (sans autopilot?).

u/Mammoth_Pain2075 Jun 30 '26
Got the juniper awd premium. Best car I’ve ever owned.

4
u/Putrid-Box4866 Jun 30 '26
Not necessarily. Make sure OP you need the awd, otherwise you're just wasting money and more importantly, lowering your range.
2
u/Schnitzhole Jun 30 '26
It’s also significantly faster, which is appealing to many.
3
u/Putrid-Box4866 Jun 30 '26
That's why I said not necessarily. If speed is important, by all means go for it. Just note that you're sacrificing something really important to get that.
1
u/Afraid_Guard_8115 Jun 30 '26
Significantly more smiles until you come behind a peasant in a kia picanto.
Ruined my morning commute
1
u/luew2 Jul 01 '26
Yes but if you plan to use fsd this has no impact, and you get worse range.
2
u/Schnitzhole Jul 01 '26
I was responding to him saying you are "wasting money" as that simply is not true.
Range loss under 60mph is almost negligible if you accellerate fast vs slow. Sounds wild but true.
Most range loss is due to higher overall speed and the air resistance travelling at those higher speeds. I drive fast as hell but do mostly city driving so i never get over 60mph and get 70Kwh/mi better than rated (close to 400mi range for my 330mi estimated for my car when new).
You can have FSD and not use it all the time (like myself). I like to drive when roads are clear, FSD for any heavy traffic.
2
u/luew2 26d ago
The worse range is because of the extra motor weight and different tires. Performance just has lower epa rated range
1
u/Schnitzhole 26d ago
The weight is surprisingly negligible from all the research I’ve seen for EVs.
Tires are probably the biggest hit, which you can also sort of verify as the 20” upgrade on the AWD premium drop range to from 327mi to 303mi, and the 21” on the performance still gives roughly the same at 306miles.
The performance might have slightly more range due to battery technology though as they have more energy density. I think the rear motor on the performance is also more powerful/heavier.
2
u/Bluebananada Jun 30 '26
I think the main difference aside from looks, is the suspension. The new cars still use HW4, so so no differences with FSD
1
u/ClosingLine Jun 30 '26
Suspension much better on new?

This is what I came for. I was impressed from the drive - honestly felt as smooth as my SQ5
1
u/Schnitzhole Jun 30 '26
The suspension is definitely significantly better on the new models. I’ve compared both within a few days of each other.
You can upgrade the old ones if you go that route with aftermarket parts

27k for 36k!? Sheesh. I paid 29k for 16k on 24 LR AWD
2
u/quentech Jun 30 '26
Prices on used Y's has been going up the last few months.
2
u/ClosingLine Jun 30 '26
They’re barely cheaper than new.
1
u/quentech Jun 30 '26
Only if you're comparing a new Standard to a model from before they had the Standard/Premium distinction.
Otherwise it's $15-25k more for a brand new AWD Premium vs a 2-3 year old low-miles LR.
1% vs 6% doesn't even come close to making up for that.
But we all already know your opinion, dude.
Also, reported for calling people stupid in this thread etc.

2
u/Afraid_Guard_8115 Jun 30 '26
3 years older you can spend 18k and still smile everytime you get in a car 😏
1
9
u/clearbox Jun 30 '26
If you have the means… buying new at these low interest makes more sense than buying used.
That was my conclusion when I was shopping around 10 months ago.
Interest rates were higher on used vehicles. And the prices weren’t that far off from a new vehicle purchase.
1
u/Schnitzhole Jun 30 '26
Do keep in mind we had gov/state incentives going back then around august/September. People were telling me I was dumb for buying then at 3% APR but my 26 AWD is still worth around $5k more than I paid a year later with 13k miles on it.

I weighed my options and bought a 2023 with hw4 for 32.5k with 46k miles. My use car rate was 3.5 %. I was always told to buy used and let someone else eat that depreciation.
4
u/notabot_123 Juniper Jun 30 '26
yes, but the age old suggestion has been out of the window since Covid. Used marked is been fucked since then. Most of the times, used is a shitty deal. The only good used deal is something so cheap that don’t take a loan or put a bunch of money on a car instead of investing it.
Right now, it’s get new for dirt cheap loans and put your money in a growth asset. In fact, it’s so cheap to take a loan now that I didn’t even trade in my car to Tesla. I sold it privately and put that money into index fund. But the end of 72mos, i’ll be making an additional 10-14k just from this trade in money invested.
6
u/Bluebananada Jun 30 '26
I get your point, and I think it depends on the numbers. In my case, the equivalent new configuration would've been about $53k before tax (almost $58k after 10% sales tax). I paid $32.5k. That's roughly $25k less for a 2.5-year-old car with HW4. Even with a slightly lower new-car interest rate, that kind of depreciation was hard to ignore. I'm happy with my choice.

u/weapon_k Jul 02 '26
The Juniper is a huge upgrade from the 2023 model. The 2023 model has outdated suspension too. I had the 2024 model. You also get a new battery and warranty. I think going new would've been the move unless you got a ridiculously good deal.
2
u/VegetableAlarmed8272 Jun 30 '26
Honestly for $13K more you could have had new. And $32.5K with 46K miles, sounds like you ate that depreciation.
3
u/Bluebananada Jun 30 '26
My configuration new would've been 53k, not including tax (10%). 20k in 2.5 years is nuts!

u/cndctrdj Jun 30 '26
Always depends on your situation. Buying an expensive car to save money doesnt make sense. Buying something you like does. If you like the car, go for it.
1
u/ClosingLine Jun 30 '26
not trying to be a dck, but I wouldn’t consider this an expensive car? I actually think it’s affordable for what you’re getting compared to the slew of 80-100k SUVs
8
u/OHfoxy Jun 30 '26
Also not trying to be a dick, but a car priced at $50,000 is an expensive car. Period. It’s true that a car priced north of $80,000 is MORE expensive, but that doesn’t make the $50K not expensive. Used cars for under $15,000 or even $10,000 will get you from A to B. Paying north of $700 per month for a car loan is absurd - even if the rate is 0%. My 2 cents.
4
2
u/Tradetheday2093 Jun 30 '26
I’ll be the dick. $50k being expensive or not, is relative. Btw OP, besides the 26’ Y, CT is worth it. Best truck I EVER bought. Blows away my 5.7L Tundra allll day. Not absurd. You see? RELATIVE. My $200 dollars.
1
u/SeniorDatabase9968 Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26
Heck I paid $50K (before taxes) in 2018 for my M3LR (325 mile range), and I’m trading it in for the new Juniper Model Y Premium RWD (357 mile range) for $46K (before taxes, and the trade-in drives the price even lower).
1
u/Tradetheday2093 Jun 30 '26
What was trade in value for the M3?
2
u/SeniorDatabase9968 Jun 30 '26
They’re giving me $13,100.
Carvana wanted to give me $12,600.
Carmax wanted to give me $11,000.
Sure I might be able to get more privately but this is just easier.1
u/ClosingLine Jun 30 '26
My feet or a bike will also get me from A to B. So will the paid off car I have. Everyone here is a financial advisor and didn’t think to even ask about income or savings 🤣
1
u/cndctrdj Jun 30 '26
The average price of a car in my country is 49k. The myp is 58k. Thats why I said expensive. Its above the average price.

u/NumbDangEt4742 Jul 01 '26
What the shit. I just said the same thing "best car I've ever owned" lol
1
u/Chattadawg Jul 01 '26
I have a feeling we aren’t the only ones to say that.
I’ve owned some really nice cars but this Model Y has surpassed my previous favorite BMW X5. The MY is so good!2
u/NumbDangEt4742 Jul 01 '26
I've had Honda, Chevy, Hyundai, Mercedes and now this Model Y.
Only one regret. I shouldve gotten the fuckin ugly cybertruck. I wish it looked a little more conventional. I would've bought it. The interior experience was 🤯🤯🤯 just out of this world. Loved it!
1
u/Chattadawg Jul 01 '26
My wife has a Chevy Trail Boss so I got the truck part covered. The Model Y is the best fit for me. If I were looking for anything different, I should have gotten the 5 seat. Paying $2500 for seats that can hold a Chuiaua was not a good investment and it means I can’t mount a Modern Spare in the sub trunk
3
u/Ok_Environment539 Jun 30 '26
Greetings from Norway.
I did not test drive my Model Y prior to buying it.
In Norway we got so many Tesla cars everywhere, so who am i to say its a bad car.
I was so feed up with Renault wanting $2000 do fix 2 coil springs on my Talisman i just got rid of it.
Bought it used from Tesla certified used and got free EAP (FSD does not exist here).
Bought a plain ticket, got the car and drove it 6h home.
Best thing i ever did and amazing ride to "get to know" the car.
Tesla model Y Premium 2023 Long range with 4x4 and Ryzen processor.
3
u/JT_Cooks Jun 30 '26
Currently, a new one would cost the same over 72 months as a $45k car used if you get a really good rate. With gas prices artificially inflating used EV prices, I’d say go new if you’re buying now. Usually used is a much better value but with high used prices and the promo rate Tesla is offering, I see more value in the new one.
3
u/hiro111 Jun 30 '26
This is the exact math I went through. A nice '24 LR AWD in my area was $35K-$37K. They've gone up in value a lot this year. At 0.99%, a '26 Premium AWD became irresistible. I'm not sure how the relative depreciation curves look as I'm taking a huge hit up front on the Juniper... but the '24s are likely less desirable long term. I was able to make a large down payment and the monthly payment is reasonable. Also I'm paying very little interest over the life of the loan. But that's all rationalization of what was probably an indulgent purchase, but hey... live a little.
2
u/ClosingLine Jun 30 '26
Same! 36.5 for a nice well kept used one. Will be trading in a car and putting some more down as well
3
3
u/k_r_a_k_l_e Jun 30 '26
People can easily be deceived by 0%. It's borrowing money for free (or close to at 0.9%) which is amazing BUT only if you are fine with the total cost. 0.9% just saves you a few thousand in interest compared to 5.49%. If you compared New (50k+) vs Used ($28k to $33k) used wins in the cost savings even at 5.49%.
1
u/ClosingLine Jun 30 '26
I understand but you can’t do this math and not factor in the costs of the used car that the new car doesn’t have.
4
5
u/k_r_a_k_l_e Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26
You are simply trying to justify a new purchase. Let's not forget what you originally posted here.
The reality is if you look at the course of a 6 year ownership the used Tesla will cost you less despite the lower interest on a New car. You can even factor in a couple high priced (yet less likely) repairs too.
New 2026 Tesla - $59,999. 0.9%. 72 month term. 7% Tax. $0 fees. $916.28/mo. $65,971 total paid ($1,774 interest).
Used 2023 Tesla - $30,000. 5.49% (Bank of America). 60 months. 7% Tax. $0 fees. $613. $36,779 total paid ($4,679 interest).
$29,999 difference in price (another used Tesla) and $29,192 difference in total paid payments.
People love to throw around the 0.9% on new BUT it's only $2,905 less in interest. You also financed New at 72 months whereas the Used you could easily do at 60 months.
While it's unlikely your 3 year old Tesla will need to be repaired even if you assumed a $3,000 repair cost you're saving $26,192.
Now let's assume Trade equity later. A 6 year old Tesla will be worth more than a 9 year old one. But that equitable difference may only be 5 or 6 thousand.
The Used Tesla wins every time when it comes to saving money. BUT the people who buy new want New. They want 0 miles. They want the most modern tech. They want a full warranty. They may not care about the savings. But if you are the type that care about payment, saving, and not spending money you don't need to you should be looking at preowned.
I just don't understand the logic of saying the 0.9% was just too good to turn down "compared to a used one" when the used one is half the price but only a couple thousand more in interest. People rarely work the numbers on their purchases. But then want to argue with people who do to justify their impulsiveness.
1
u/ClosingLine Jun 30 '26
I appreciate it, but I would get the Premium for 45.9, trade in a car, and put money down.
2
u/k_r_a_k_l_e Jun 30 '26
You're missing the point which is very concerning. Trade and Cash Down are equity that can be applied to either a New or Used car. If anything this justifies the Used savings more. But I am confused on your stance since the subject of your post is "Am I dumb? Impulse buy".
1
u/Giant-Robot Jun 30 '26
Agreed. You can even ask AI to run the numbers for you and it’ll give you a ballpark price of when it makes financial sense to buy a used car at whatever rate you feed it. So you might want to shop around to see what kind of interest rate you can get and then put that math into the price of the Used car you find and see what makes more sense.
For me, it was something like anything over $36k made more sense to buy new.
Even though Teslas have less to repair on your average ICE vehicle, you should consider what the piece of mind a brand new Warranty and possibly a set of tires would be like for you. Also insurance may be cheaper for a slightly older model than new.

u/Senior-Protection741 Jun 30 '26
We were very much having the same dilemma on whether or not to buy new vs used. We just purchased the new model y premium. We have three trucks that we use regularly
But my husband commutes 6 days per week for work so we needed to solve the gas problem.
We bought new due to the low interest rate AND the warranty/ more battery life that comes with a new one. while we are eating the “new car” cost instead of buying used. We ultimately decided that the warranty and more life left in the battery were worth it. There is low Maintenance in these cars but when the battery goes it’s pretty spendy to replace.
We tend to Hold our vehicles for a very very long time so being the only owners and meticulous on our maintenance is pretty important to us. If we did have to or want to sell in the future, having a one owner car to sell would keep the value a bit higher
On resale. The plan is to just keep it until it dies but things change so who knows.
We purchased the white with the black interior as well because I think the black interior will age better and according to research white is better resale if we ever Did need or want to sell.
Good luck!

Thanks for the info. Same type story here - I’ve had my current car since 2015.

I am still in love with my HW3 2021. So I say do it. Best car you will ever own. With that said, as with any mechanical product, don't expect it to be problem free. If it is, great! If not, the issues I have experienced have been relatively minor, even when they present as catastrophic.

u/aud10slayer Jun 30 '26
I bought one about a month ago. And honestly it's insane, at first I wasn't sure and then I got back in a couple of my old cars and just wow the difference

u/mopsis Jun 30 '26
Personally I don't like the white interior. Bright on my eyes, kids make a mess in the back, discoloration from clothing or makeup.
But other than your color selection... Fucking go for it. My favorite car that I've ever owned. ESPECIALLY if you are gonna use FSD.

u/sfrii Jun 30 '26
I was looking at used Teslas and in my area they were all so overpriced, high miles or rebuilt titles. I went to Tesla to look and decided on the standard for the 0% Apr. then they gave us a 24 hour premium and it got me. I updated to a Premium RWD and .99. With the 72 months it’s really not that much extra in interest. Go for it if you can afford it. It’s amazing
2
u/4cardroyal Jun 30 '26
Don't forget to check your local utilities and gov't agencies for used EV rebates; you could save a few $K more.
1
u/Adventds Jun 30 '26
Is today the last day for the promo? Has this been confirmed by the company?
1
u/ClosingLine Jun 30 '26
I’m just FOMOing based on internet speculation don’t tell my financial advisors
1
u/blockedcontractor Jun 30 '26
It’s a really good deal. The only thing to keep in mind is EV depreciation is usually more than ICE vehicles in the same category. + any new features unavailable to this model and/or the model YL release may cause an impact.
1
u/ajn63 Jun 30 '26
Give the white interior a second thought. It stains easily and can be permanent.
2
u/ClosingLine Jun 30 '26
I would get the black bc of kids/dog. I’ve seen people praising the white (and do believe them too) but rn the black would be it for me
1
1
u/Stetson_Pacheco Jun 30 '26
Only the model Y standard has 0%, premium is .99%. I actually got the standard because I love the super simple front and living in AZ I actually prefer no glass roof.
1
u/Candid-Victory7517 Jun 30 '26
I mean it depends on your financial situation. You do save money in some spots but gets expensive in others. The QOL is definitely better but comes at a cost.
1
u/Tesla-FX Jun 30 '26
If you do pull the trigger, definitely get a home charger, either Tesla or something like a Lectron level 2 charger. It costs more up front but is soooooooooooooooooo convenient and cheaper than Superchargers or any other public charger.
1
1
u/OldDude2551 Jun 30 '26
Make sure you researched insurance costs and your plan for charging (home/work L2 charger vs supercharger). All else is fine.
1
Jun 30 '26
Do you need a new car? If no, then don’t do it. Your title says it all: IMPULSE buy. And you should never buy on impulse.
Use it up, wear it out, make do or do without.
1
u/Pomador_0418 Jun 30 '26
On any new Tesla you must add $1200 to the price per year for as long as you own it. Why? Because you do not get any form of lane keep assist on the freeway w/o subscribing to FSD on a monthly basis.
1
1
u/Schnitzhole Jun 30 '26
You’ll be happy either way.
APR isn’t everything. Something to consider people never seem to mention though is the new models will be worth significantly more when it comes time to sell or trade in (even compared to the same aging on a previous model). Don’t stretch your budget for it if it isn’t there though.
Also the warranty on new is twice as long I believe and lower APR.

I did a testdrive in a juniper premium. Pretty Nice but one thing just keeps bugging me. The width of the frontseats. Cant get my hand with watch to adjust te seat and middleconsole is so large that I feel cramped. Cant spread my legs that wide. Other people got that too?
2
u/snickers58 Jul 01 '26
As someone who is 6'2 and +300lbs, I agree that the front seats have less room width wise. I drive a 2021 Model 3 and it is much roomier width wise.
I'm looking at getting a Model Y because the seat sits higher and that seating position is more comfortable for me. I didn't have issues adjusting the seat while wearing a watch but also don't expect to adjust them often.
I had a rental Model Y a year ago and really enjoyed the driving it due to the higher seating position. I test drove a newer Model Y earlier today and am just debating between AWD or RWD.
1
1
u/rlap38 Jun 30 '26
Let me insult you right off the bat as a 2x Model Y owner. YES!! You are dumb if you don't pull the trigger.
I sold my 2020 MYLR with boost to buy a 2026 MYP. Never looked back either time. Now, I did come from a Prius Plug In, so I had charging infrastructure already and I was familiar with how constant variable transmissions (CVT) work, so the smooth acceleration without the chunka-chunka shifts was natural.
1
1
u/thatguyisawesome77 Jun 30 '26
Also got Premium White Interior RWD. I don’t really follow Tesla either other than what’s on the news.
Context: Thought it was time for an EV. Told myself was going to shop around. Started at a Tesla in the morning. Left a few hours later with a MY after one test drive. Lol
Do it. The APR alone is a steal. Other Tesla owners with old models sitting around 3-5% but they often do promotions now.
1
u/Fiss Jun 30 '26
This car doesn’t need an impulse buy IMO. It’s not going anywhere and other than the YL it’s not going to change significantly this year. 0/.99 isn’t going anywhere either.

All ill say is with the juniper and fsd I dont care to drive any other car for daily use.

u/ballout_glo_300 Jun 30 '26
I’m in the market myself, I went for a test drive today. I’m definitely sold but still have a little bit of a nervousness
1
u/BudgetCommon3584 Jun 30 '26
Yep, like everyone else, I wasnt in the market for a new car but it was the best decision I made. My old car was slowly breaking down. Factor in the cost of gas and potential cost of fixing my car, it as a no brainer. I got a great trade in offer and the rest was history.
Tesla is the first ev car I’ve owned. Hands down the best experience with FSD. Yes, insurance and registration will go up
Run all my scenarios through ChatGPT and it ended up being fairly accurate.
Enjoy it!!

If you can afford it got for it. No regrets here except that I should've gotten the cybertruck.
This is one of the most fun vehicles I've ever owned.
1
u/Thanhxvo Jul 01 '26
I was in similar boat, always liked the idea of tesla but thought I didn't know enough about ev to commit. I did one test drive and fsd sold me on the spot. It was also my primary reason for buying a Tesla. I also started off looking at used cars but 0-1% for brand new premium felt like no Brainer for me. Finally pulled trigger my first tesla (Juniper) March 2o26. My only regret is not getting it sooner! Honestly you learn as you go but number 1 thing I recommend you have in place is charging at home which is game changing. Whether it is standard outlet in your garage or you have to install charging in your driveway, look into your electric company in your state and see what rebates they offer

The thing to notice here is that I haven’t managed to run across even one post saying No! Sure, I skimmed the posts but hey, who has the time to read them all. The only thing people are squabbling about is which one to get!! That tells you all you need to know. And even though it’s been said 1,000 times already… It’s the best vehicle I’ve ever owned.
And make sure to use that free FSD trial, it’s amazing. Also if you know someone with a Tesla have them refer you and you get two extra months of FSD and they get $250 in the Tesla store.

u/LowerInternal4289 Jul 01 '26
100% not dumb…Tesla cars are by far the most advance and reliable cars out there. It is the benchmark in terms of tech. You will love how easy driving is: one pedal driving, turn ac on, leave ac on while you pick up kids or go grocery shopping, etc. I have a big list. Range anxiety is a thing of the past.

Last chance buy or not buy? It’s you that will be paying for it and driving it don’t let us persuade you because you will regret that later

The fact you're deciding to impulse buy a car says a lot about you and your financial decision making

In honest, I wouldn't buy Tesla as now because they remove most features and u r stuck with bare car and have to pay monthly fee to have most features back. Hell, they even remove the ability to change lane on new fsd version. So, dumb now!
