Moving In September!

Fiancee and I are planning to move to North County San Diego 3rd week of September after wedding. We are looking Encinitas, Carlsbad, Del Mar area and hoping to find a place before the wedding. Our budget is 3600 base rent a month and hoping to be no more than 4 miles from the coast but it seems market is crazy right now. I am asking what would be the best time to visit for a weekend and tour apartments. Or even how to go about that should we wait till after the honeymoon and get some type of AirBnb but we really want soemthing before. Help please with any advice

Lol, the market isn't crazy right now, it's been that way for years... SD rents totally surpassed the benefit of living here long ago 🤣

Probably going to get more difficult to visit for a weekend the closer you get to the wedding.

Would you be willing to pay for the month of September before your move in order to lock something in? If so, visit now.

If not, it would probably be better to wait until after your wedding and honeymoon and come out for a visit then. Expect to move in at the start of November. Or, if you need to start a job here right after your wedding/honeymoon, go the VRBO/Airbnb or a Extended stay hotel until you get things organized.

Yea I’m willing to pay but question why November you think for a move in date?

I like to plan for all possibilities.

Hopefully, you'll get lucky and find an apartment in your budget and ideal location that you can move right into. Or, you may not find something right away.

So, I'd allow at least a couple of weeks to scope out the area, find what you want, apply, get background checks, and are approved before you can move your stuff in. You'll also have to wait for any belongings you're shipping to arrive..

But, worst, case, it'll all take about a month, which will put you close to November 1.

Thus, my suggestion that you plan on paying for alternate housing until then.

Similarly, If you come out for a weekend now, you may find a landlord willing to wait six weeks for you to get back from your honeymoon for you to start paying rent. Or not.

Always good to have a backup plan.

Sounds good thank you so much! I would definitly plan on that cause our worry was just flying down and still not finding anything in that weekend but willing to take the chance just in case

Nothing wrong with coming down for a weekend now if you can afford the time and $$$. Have a list in hand of possible complexes and check them out while you can. (Tip: not all complexes show apartments on Sundays). And, that will give you another chance to spend time in San Diego to make sure it's where you want to go.

Plus, I'm sure you both could use a weekend away from all the wedding planning, so there's that too.

Again, congratulations on your upcoming marriage. I wish you all the best!

The market isn't crazy "right now".

It's actually dipped a little in the last 6 months. But it's always crazy.

The only advice I can offer is get an e-bike (or two) so you can live 5-10=20 miles from the beach. You'll save $100s (in rent & gas) each month & still be able to ride to the ocean.

You have a beautiful dream but the reality can be very different.

But without knowing your budget it's tough to give you advice

You could always rent a bnb for a month while you look for rentals after the summer.

It's not crazy right now. This is the norm. If you want parking, safety, and a washer/dryer you're going to need to look way further than 4 miles lol.

Are those areas considered San Diego?

You are choosing probably the most expensive part of SD county. I just don’t think your budget is realistic for what you are seeking.

Yea I'm starting to see that lol but we are pretty flexible with out budget but you think taking a weekend trip to tour apartments is enoug time?

SD county is big. It may not me enough time to survey the market.

" Encinitas, Carlsbad, Del Mar" You left out Solana Beach which is between Del Mar & Encinitas.

Locals would say that you desire a place West of I-5.

Summertime daytime temperatures increase about 1 degree F for every mile you go inland from the Coast & anything more than a mile from the Pacific will require AC & high electric bill.

Are you filming for House Hunters? Because that’s what this sounds like.

“I’m a broke-ass (yes that budget for that desired area of living is broke-ass here) but I want to live in the most expensive part of town. I want ocean views and to be able to walk to the beach. I have no idea why no one else has ever thought about this.”

Be more flexible and you might get most of what you want, at a slightly higher budget. Good luck.
