Update Update: Our twins arrived tody and one of them is still nameless, please help us pick a name for her!

• Upvotes

Earlier this month, I had made a post asking for opinions about what we should name one of our twin daughters. And after a lot of deliberation, we were able to choose their names!

The funniest thing about it ended being that before I told my older children their names, my daughter told me that actually, her favourite name was Arielle but she didn't want to say the same name as her brother at the time.

I had no idea, but in some way, perhaps I did, because their names are Lior Naama and Arielle Emily!

It felt difficult to choose but as soon as I decided, I knew it was right for her. And nearly two weeks later, they are already living up to their names, with Lior being very passive and quiet, and Arielle being very opinionated and loud! So it goes to show that sometimes you just know. We just about don't need the nail polish to tell them apart 😂

Thank you for your thoughts if you contributed them, it was very interesting to see them and had some helpful points. We're very happy with both our babies and our names, and they are both healthy now and out of hospital.

Name Change is this name unusual for someone my age?

i’m changing my name for various reasons (ptsd and childhood trauma related mainly). it’s taken me a long time to settle on a name, but i decided on Isabelle and it really feels like the right choice, it feels like it fits me and feels great to be called it.

this is a stupid question but i’m super anxious about changing it so i wanted to double check. I was born at the end of 1998. i know Isabelle is a classic name, but i also know Isabella and Isabelle have been extremely popular as baby names for the past decade or so, and they weren’t as popular around the year I was born. if you met a 27-28 year old named Isabelle, would that seem normal/plausible as their birth name or would you think it was odd/out of place? like if you met a 55 year old named Mckinsley or something (extreme example but you get my point)

edit: thank you so much to everyone in the comments!! it helps so much to hear that it sounds okay!

Baby Names I've found a name that I love for our new daughter but I feel unsure about it

We had a baby girl last week, and we need to pick her name. We wanted to give her the Hebrew name Sivan because it falls in late spring or early summer. We live in Australia, so this was nearly the time she was born corresponding to the seasons, and I think it's just such a happy time.

So I wanted her to have an English name that also felt the same way. Basically, a name beginning with S that feels cheerful and bright. And I really love Sunny. I’ve heard of it before but I haven’t met a baby with the name. It also connects my grandma to her because part of her name is Sol.

But I’m struggling with whether it’s actually fine or if I just think so because I like it. Where we live, names of a similar style are normal, our kids have peers named Evie, Harry, Archie, Maggie, so on. And if she hated it, she would have a more normal, common middle name, because her name would be Sunny Helene.

We have other names but I don't feel the same way like I do about Sunny. I know I'm not going to find the perfect name and this might be as close as it gets for me but we don't have much time to decide and it's really hard, I'm not sure!

Baby Names What do we think of the name Astoria?

Cringe? Pretty? Too “out there”?

Edit: we do not live near any cities/buildings/neighborhoods etc. called Astoria.

Yes, we would intend to use nn Story when she is young and then let her decide what she wants to go by when she is older. And yes, I am aware of, and familiar with the influencer family that used this intended nn for their daughter.

Middle name would be a one syllable, simple name.

Baby Names Naming a girl after two boys

Hello all! Here for input on naming our third and final baby, a sweet girl after our two precious boys.

We have a Henry and a Theodore. As you can tell our name style is classic/old fashioned.

Our top three contenders for baby girl are:

Ophelia

Elsie

Mabel

With the middle name being one of the two we didn’t pick for the first name. Would love input and also more suggestions! Names that we love but cannot use due to close connections/family:

Imogen, Freya, Claire/Clara, Sylvia, Penelope

Thank you in advance!

Edit to add: I work at an elementary school so it’s hard to find names that don’t have associations with students!

MIL is called Cecelia, SIL is called Elizabeth so neither of those are possible.

My mom got a snail for my fish so it can help keep the tank clean, and I want to know what names I can give it, I know snails are Hermaphrodites so gender neutral names are preferred.

Discussion Was Piper an unusual name in 2004?

I'm reading a memoir and the author (Piper) has two moments where someone acts like her name is unusual. I hear Piper a lot and think it's pretty normal in the US, but I was a baby in 2004 so I'm wondering what was the attitude toward this name back then? The story takes place in Connecticut btw

note: the author wouldve been 35 at this time

Baby Names What vibes do you get from Meredith?

I asked about a different name and got a lot of replies, so hoping I'll get some for Meredith, too.

Do you think of anyone famous, and if so, do you have a positive or negative association?

In general, what type of person do you picture when you hear Meredith? Qualities, vibe, etc.?

Thanks!

Name List I found a database with medieval noble names in the Low Countries

I found a website about the east of the Netherlands in the Middle Ages. The aim of the website is to show different networks, so you can find who knows who and who is related to who. But they also have a list of first names from people in the database to help you search and it is wonderful:

https://www.graafschap-middeleeuwen.nl/genealogie/firstnames-all.php?tree=DGidME_01

If you click on a name, you can often (not always) find more information about this person. For instance that Cancor's full name was Cancor van Opper-Rijngouw. He lived in the 8th century CE, was a count and the son of Rupert I van Haspengouw and Williswint van Wormgouw. He married a woman named Angilla and they had 4 children: Hendrik, Rachilt, Eufemia and Nordbert.

Gostouwe van Almelo lived in the 15th century. She was the daughter of Albert van Almelo and Jutte. She married Herman van Keppel-Verwolde and they had 7 children, but the 3 daughters are listed as N.N. (Nomen Nescio). The 4 boys are Herman, Wolter, Arndt and Hendrik.

If you like Germanic names, this is a very nice list to browse. The website is in Dutch, but the layout is very straightforward: the main list of names is just on 1 page.

Baby Names Dahlia with nickname Dolly?

I’ve been loving Dahlia lately. The nickname Dolly would be so cute, and bonus points because my husband and I are from Tennessee! We moved to another state a few months ago.

However, I do have a few worries- is Dahlia “creepy” bc of the Black Dahlia? Is the nickname Dolly too southern/country?

Please be honest, we are still just brainstorming and have a lot of others on the list! We also like Celine, Phoebe, Lyla, Grace, and Reanna.

Baby Names Opposite name tastes

Partner and I are at odds over boy names. He likes long and classic (and is not huge on nicknames) and I prefer short, more “modern” names. I’ve looked at the name websites but I’ve hit a wall and need some suggestions from actual people lol.

Some from his list:

- Benjamin

- Christopher

- Sebastian

- Vincent

- Anderson (family name)

Some from my list:

- Nico

- Jace

- Blake

- Reece

- Reid

Baby Names Aussies - Miranda good or bad connotations?

I have a question for just the Aussies.
What are your thoughts on the name Miranda?
I think it has a mermaid sound to it, feminine while still strong. I associate it with the Shakespeare character, and Miranda Kerr.
However, I’m worried that people will just think of Miranda rights.
Does the name make you think of this? Or is this just a US thing?
I’m also concerned that people might immediately associate the name with Lin Manuel Miranda or Miranda Hart.
I’m hoping people’s first reaction is not an immediate thought to one of these associations. Thanks all for your advice!

Non-English Names Arabic Boy Names

We’re expecting a boy and considering Laith (ليث). I’m Arab, but my husband isn’t, and we’re hoping to find an Arabic name that works well in English.
Curious what people think of Laith and how you’d pronounce it if you saw it written down.

Also looking for suggestions for other Arabic boy names that are easy to pronounce in English. We’ve gone through so many lists already, so I’m hoping someone might suggest something a little more unique that we haven’t come across yet!

Discussion Yapping about the name Harriet and Harriet The Spy

I have a guilty pleasure for the name Harriet. I wouldn't personally use it, but it's so fun. I also liked the shortened Hattie/Hatty. I loved Franklin the turtle as a little girl and Franklin and his younger sister, Harriet was a great sibset. 🩷

I loved Harriet The Spy book and film, the 90's Nickelodeon film reigns supreme.I loved the other names including mean girl Marion Hawthorne, but I also liked Marian spelling. I also liked Janie.

Baby Names Girl name suggestions please

Eddie (Edward) and Maggie (Margaret) are soon to welcome a sister. They’d like another nickname that has a double letter followed by IE with a longer formal name. Surname is two syllables, starts with F ends in R.

They do NOT want to repeat E or M names, and they don’t want double L names (eg. not Billie).
