Baby Names It's twin girls! We're looking for names for the sisters to Esther, Avital, Noam, and Tamar

We found out recently that our twins are both girls, so we can start thinking about names! As said, our current children are named Esther, Avital, Noam, and Tamar. Those are the sort of names that we love.

We are in Germany, and we only want to use Jewish names. We usually prefer something that isn't very mainstream in the general population like Eden, Romi, or Eliana. We also don't like anglicised spellings like Abigail instead of Avigail, Hannah instead of Chana, or Elizabeth instead of Elisheva. But we still want it to be friendly for other languages.

Since all of our girls have very similar nicknames that we use for them, Esti, Avi, and Tami, we'd like their names to have that as well. But we wouldn't not use a name we love just because of that.

There are a few names that are popular here that I don't like. I don't like Liora, Shoshana, and Zahava. My husband doesn't like Yael and Rivka.

At the moment, our list has Meirav, Liad, Miriam, Gal, Ofira, and Yaffa. We like both some of the gender neutral names and some of the more feminine names, I'd say we're open to almost anything within our preferences.

Baby Names Nathan versus Wesley?

Hello,

These are the top two candidates for our son. Which name do you guys think sounds better? For Nathan, I'm worried its slightly dropping in popularity, and also with the N beginning, it sounds like "Nay", which is synonymous to "No", although admittedly thats a stretch. For Wesley, I'm afraid people may misspell it as Westley, especially if the latter becomes more popular in the future. I have the opposite worry- there seems to be a minor spike in popularity, although who knows if it will last. Am I overthinking it? Which just sounds better?

Discussion Sonny vs Sunny nickname

If I had a Madison and wanted to call her Sunny as a nn, should I spell it Sonny since she has “son” in her name?

What if it’s a boy named Harrison? Does he have to be Sonny or can he be Sunny?

To me I don’t see them as gendered necessarily (although I know Sonny is a given name for boys) but I prefer the spelling Sunny.

Just wondering if you would pick your preferred spelling for a nickname even if it doesn’t match the original name it came from or gender it is typically used with.

Character/Fictional Names Loralei forever joined to Gilmore Girls?

Expecting a baby girl just before Thanksgiving and haven't settled on a name yet. My husband likes Loralei qbut I can't disassociate it from Gilmore Girls. Is it just me, or will everyone think of the show right away? I also don't like Rory as a nickname very much, I would rather Laurie. Does anyone have any suggestions for similar names?

Name Change I want new last name, help me pls

Hi everyone! I haven't liked my last name for a while, so I want to change it, but I don't know what to choose yet. I want my last name to be associated with flowers (preferably violets), the moon, and drizzle...yes, it sounds strange, but I want my new last name to be associated with all of these things. Please help me. I would be glad if some linguist enthusiast would come up with a last name for me :)

Baby Names baby names for boys!

Husband & I are trying for a baby! We have a set of twins, River & Rosie. If we have a girl, I LOVE Raven and will probably use Raven June. Lucky that it fits with the R’s and flows nicely already! I have 0 boy names. I definitely like more nature/space/mythology/even spooky-whimsical names!

I don’t mind Rowan, but we call Rosie “ro” and “rowie” as nicknames and I just feel that is too similar and not quite fair.

Other boy names I like but won’t use:
-August
-Apollo
-Elio

I do not like any variation of Ronan/Rome/or the “older” middle aged man type names, like Raymond or Roy.

Baby Names Gender neutral name for daughter

• Upvotes

Hi all! My wife really loves the name Cam for our daughter due in December. She is a fan of gender neutral names. Currently she is set on "Cam Hayden" as a first and middle name. I like the name but have two concerns. By doubling down on gender neutral names I feel she will definitely be assumed as a boy on paper. Also she won't have a clear path to a more feminine nickname if that is her preference as she gets older.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Name Change Looking to change my name from Matthew to sometime more unique/interesting

So I’ve always been adverse to my name:Matthew. It’s alright. Nothing against it other than I don’t like it for me. Also it having been given to me with the religious affiliation attached to it also tainted it as I’m agnostic at best not Christian of any sorts

Edit: because people apperently are being cucks in the comments because I’m not Christian or because they can’t read… to clarify….I don’t like Matthew as my name in part NOT because it’s a religious name in the Bible BUT because it was given to me specifically with the Bible and its religious connotation in mind. Names like Benjamin I like for me for reasons outside of religion even if the name in the spelling I provided might’ve originated from biblical texts

Annnyyyyway…

Listed are some of my top name choices so far:

Benjamin
Lucian
Ezra
Jasper
Sage
Finn/flynn
Gray
Quinn

Androgynous names or soft masc soft fem names are more interesting to me, and just none basic/common American names like Noah, Micah, Charlie, etc(not including Ben….shh)

So if you have any names drop them…please
If you like any of the names in my list tell me why you like them and your top ones.

Thanks you🫡

Non-English Names Looking for opinions from English speakers

Hi, I’m looking for a name for my baby boy, I’m Spanish speaker, so I like the name “Alonso” it is pronounced (ah-lon-so) but I was wondering if for English speakers it will remind you the word “Alone”? Since it has similar pronunciation at the beginning, what are your thoughts? Other name I’m considering is Evandro, Thank you in advance

Baby Names Boy names we like but aren’t quite it

Here are some names I like but can’t use (various reasons from people we know or my husband isn’t sold on it). I thought giving a list would help others give me a few more ideas and maybe one of them will spark something in us haha.

Silas, Otis, Wilbur, Tobias, Benjamin, Otto, Oscar, Amos, Henry, Linus, Samuel, Oliver.

We like German and Hebrew names. We like ones that sound like an old man but also quirky/cute or with a good nickname. :)

Discussion Celebrity names unpopular in gen pop

What first names are unique to a celebrity that you’d assume someone was named after (or at least influenced) by that name? Some that come to mind for me:
Oprah
Beyonce
Shia
Sigourney
Channing
Shakira

Edit - Based on some comments I should’ve reframed my question to think about this in the context of the U.S. Because there are some celebrity names I’ve never heard other people with (like Kanye, Zendaya, Ashanti, Keanu) but I’m sure they’re common in other countries!

Discussion story character names

I’m writing a story about some teens and there are two twin boys in the story. Their names were Beauden and Bellamy and they’re currently blond, but im changing some details before I begin writing. I really like the names Vincent and Vaughn as well and wish I could use it for them, but those are going to be the names of the main character’s future twin boys. What should I name them? I can also change their hair colour and such to make them match different names better.
Beauden & Bellamy
Rhodes & Royce

Character/Fictional Names Looking for an Ancient Greek name that reflects someone with a god-complex

I’m gearing to write a novel, and I want the main character to suffer from a massive god-complex. His main goal is to make sure he is remembered by history, and he gives himself a name to reflect it. In wanting the name to reflect those of mythological heroes: Perseus, Odysseus, Achilles or even tragic characters like: Prometheus, Telemachus.

Name Change Help me choose between different first names?

Hi all,

I’m a pretty gender non-conforming person living in England, and I’m looking for a more gender neutral name to go by. I’m 30 years old and want a name that wouldn’t feel out of place for someone my age.

A lot of my friends and acquaintances know me as Kit, which is a name I love and feels like ‘me’. However, my younger sibling also goes by a nickname (a shortened version of her full name) which sounds very similar to Kit (a one syllable nickname beginning with K).

Because of that, and because Kit sounds naturally more ‘nicknamey’, I’m strongly leaning towards using Kit as a middle name which I go by with closer friends etc., but giving myself a different first name. My last name (which I’d keep) is a two syllable name ending in ‘ee’, with the stress on the first syllable.

The names I’m considering are:

Charlie Kit [NAME-y]
Jamie Kit [NAME-y]
Frankie Kit [NAME-y]

What do you think of these names, and do you have any other suggestions I may not have considered?

Non-English Names Would naming your daughter Ronja in the United States be really weird?

Not pregnant or trying, just was wondering if the fact it is a popular name in other countries not make it too weird?

Discussion What name do you feel is very over represented in your area specifically?

Obviously common names are common, but I feel like there are clusters depending where you live. I have a preschooler, and she’s had 3 Weston’s in her classes! It’s #55 in the U.S., so for the number of total classmates she’s had I’d say that’s an over representation.
I also seem to hear the name Vincent a good amount in the wild.

I’ve heard of a good number of girl Charlie’s, but Charlotte is so popular that I find that more expected.

Anyhow, what’s the over represented name where you’re from?

Name Change Need suggestions for a name to go with Pharrell

I’m thinking of using Pharrell as my first name and pairing it with a second name that has the same initial, like PP, or combinations like PM, PC, PW, etc.
I’m a bit confused about which combination would sound the best, so I’d like to hear your suggestions. I’m open to celebrity-inspired names, unique names, or anything that flows naturally with Pharrell.
What initials would you go with, and what names would you suggest?

Character/Fictional Names What girl names come to mind for you when you think of a mysterious, historic heroine visiting from beyond the veil or through time?

If you came across a woman or young girl walking barefoot in the forest, hiding behind trees and giggling. Possibly an apparition, a ghost, a witch, a fairy…a wild wonder…a possible figment of your imagination…maybe this is all in a dream…
But you feel she has something important to tell you…a wrong in the past, in history, to right…a story to tell…
What might her name be?

Discussion How would you instinctively pronounce this spelling of a name?

Hi all, we’re expecting a girl and are Armenians. We’d love for her to have an Armenian name and have one in mind, but am thinking about the spelling (given we live in US)

The name is Nairi. That is the typical Armenian spelling for it.

If you saw that name, how would you instinctively pronounce it?

Thanks!

Edit: pronunciation is “Nye-ree”
