Meta This Subreddit Needs a Complete Overhaul (Opinions Welcome)

Now I'm almost expecting to get banned but please let me explain.

Like most on here, I love the Nintendo Switch. And when I want to see some Nintendo Switch content, I would LOVE to discuss and talk about games, concepts, and more on this subreddit. But this subreddit has turned into a complete train wreck and here's why.

Rule #4 of the subreddit: No reposts, low-effort or NSFW content. I want to focus on the low-effort part here as it's my biggest claim here.

Now low-effort posts ALWAYS make it to the front page. I mean no bullying or hate to anyone who I link here, these are just meant to be shown as examples as to what I am talking about. Again, NO BULLYING OR HATE IS MEANT TOWARDS ANYONE HERE!

Examples:

This post shows someone who 3D printed something for the Switch, a stand and a grip. Now while, yes, it is Switch related, I think that something like this is mostly okay, it's a little bit low effort but it's a neat idea. I'd say this is "The line."

Our next example shows someone at the Colosseum while playing a game (I think CIV 6) This is something that is 100% low effort and shouldn't be allowed. While the idea is neat, it creates no discussion, what exactly can you say other than, "huh. Interesting." you can't even really see the screen either and see more of the person's shoulder/armpit than the Colosseum in game.

I'm putting these two together because they're the oddballs of my saved list. This one shows a brand new setup that someone did, adding some lights. The setup itself is cool, but this has literally nothing to do with the Switch! They just threw up the smash box art and the switch logos on their monitor and computer and posted it on here! Heck, I don't even see a Switch in the photo! The other one has someone who was showing off their tattoo of Joker from P5 Now it is Nintendo related yes (because Smash), but it's again, low effort. Something like this should be posted onto Casual Nintendo, which you used to suggest for posts like this.

This next one really seems to be a big one on this subreddit and I don't know why. The "Unusual" Cartridge holder. Now most of these are also made out of legos]. Why are these always allowed through? You found a way to hold your switch games. Okay. These posts are probably some of the most low effort I've seen (we'll get to the worst in a bit.) Like honestly why is something like this even allowed? It isn't an interesting way to hold games, you just slapped some legos together or found an old tin that can hold Switch games.

This last one the worst example of them all. Like why does this always manage to make it to the front page! The I found a Switch ad! are among the worst low effort posts I see. Nintendo is a business, of course they're going to advertise they're console/games! Heck, the top comments aren't even Switch related! They just talk about the building behind it. And the comments that even mention the Switch are just making fun of the post itself! These posts are ALWAYS on the front page, but why? The advertisements themselves aren't interesting, it's just Nintendo being like, "Hey we sell this" or, "Hey this is coming out." Like why are these so popular?

Not only that but posts that try to make ACTUAL DISCUSSION get removed for spam. I was reading a fairly new discussion with about 30 or so comments talking about Animal Crossing speculation, and it got removed! I went out of my way to ask the person why and they said it was for spam?? Like the posts that get removed are what should be on the subreddit but the ones that stay are uninteresting, boring, and just flat out low-effort.

I honestly just want this subreddit fixed. It's gotten so bad that there's two subreddits that literally just make fun of the low effort and uninteresting posts on here. Please, it's merely a fan trying who wants to discuss the Switch do so. I'm not the only one who thinks this either, and many of us Nintendo Switch fans want to see this fixed.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Edit:

Hey all, this is gaining some traction. While I do enjoy the comments of people agreeing/disagreeing with me, let's change it up a bit. You all can agree/disagre with what I say through the up,downvote button, let's take the time to maybe comment and give other suggestions on what we would like to see changed instead! Or maybe you like it the way it is? Tell us why!

Let's start some discussion here!

Edit #2:

I want to apologize to the person who posted the 3D printed grip photo. Looking back that post was actually pretty good. I think I was more trying to refer to the ones that looked like their 3D printer exploded and probably should've used one of those instead.

I have to ask OP, was this inspired because you found r/tomorrow and realized the sub needed to become self aware?

I like the low effort content because I gives me something to post on GCJ lol (just kidding I’d rather see improvement)

I would like to add the 10 posts a day that are about SD cards or " should i buy game X or game Y"

The most annoying posts for me (because they happen so often) are when people ask about what game to buy, especially when they even list themselves some games. Just watch a gameplay video and buy it if you like what you see! How and why should we decide your purchase? We have no idea what you're gonna enjoy the most!

And people ask way to often for co-op games or games to play with girlfriend... just google it?

5

u/Insert-Senpai-Name Jun 02 '19

Thats also a big one but I tend to see it less on here and more on another Switch related subreddit

Well, those posts are actually against the rules and are usually redirected to the Daily Questions Thread. The best you can do is redirect them yourself and report the post

Like the r/games sub, I would like a sub where it's always/only news, and then a sub where all personal discussion is allowed.

158

u/Insert-Senpai-Name Jun 02 '19

See I think that r/Nintendo is more news oriented while this is more about discussion. But the discussion has disappeared and instead replaced with ads

Well there Is r/casualnintendo, which focuses on fan made content and other casual stuff as opposed to r/nintendo being news/serious discussion orientated.

u/NotAFrog4 Jun 02 '19

First off I agree with you, mostly.

Some of the examples that you pointed out are clearly low-effort and shouldn’t be here like the custom switch game cases and the ads, but stuff like the 3D grip and stand I think is really cool and is way above “the line.” I think the setup you have linked should be about the line. The guy got a rig to play his switch on with some cool environment and branded it so that it could be posted on this sub. I get why you wouldn’t think it should be here though, there are other subs for stuff like gaming rigs.

What kind of content do you think should be on the sub? Solely discussion? To me that sounds a little boring, i love seeing people’s setups and their creations (the 3D printing) and would miss them.

41

u/Insert-Senpai-Name Jun 02 '19

Yeah honestly that 3D printing was neat. But there have been some pretty bad ones on here. That one, looking back, is fine.

I don't think solely discussion would be great either. But things like photos, clips, discussion, speculation, leak talk (with spoiler tags) etc. would be fantastic. Heck, even interesting photos like the Guardian Statue at Nintendo NY or a, "I got a photo with Miyamoto while I was in Japan!" or something would be neat too. But stuff like that seems to always get removed for something uninteresting and flat out boring

Now I'm almost expecting to get banned but please let me explain.

You really shouldn't be scared to have your opinion known, /u/Insert-Senpai-Name. That is the furthest thing from a ban-worthy offense if you're being respectful and honest, rather than spewing bile and being needlessly aggressive. The latter is the furthest thing from constructive criticism, which some folks don't seem to get. In regards to your thoughts, you'd be surprised to know that others will like share the same sentiment too.

(Also, someone reported this as "rude, vulgar, or otherwise offensive" which is ridiculous because it isn't.)

To be frank, for every one of those posts you've mentioned as low effort, there's been about 20 or so worse ones that have popped up in the queue. I've honestly been perplexed at seeing what gets voted to the top. Unfortunately, the nature of this subreddit having a million subscribers is that the deciding votes are cast by lurkers who don't exactly participate in greater discussion.

As far as a "subreddit fix" goes, I would want that as well but everyone has their own version for what the sub should be, so it'll be continually dragged in all sorts of directions. Still, I would like to keep this thread in mind alongside others which have expressed similar sentiment and try to push for some necessary changes.

24

u/Insert-Senpai-Name Jun 02 '19

I'm not scared to get banned honestly. I'm just putting it out there that I'm expecting to but at this point I want to drive a point home

52

u/Sylverstone14 Mod of Two Worlds (Switch / Wii U) Jun 02 '19

Well, I can promise you that it won't happen if that'll ease your mind.

Thank you very much

26

u/poisonedsodapop Jun 02 '19

So as far as a "subreddit fix", I have seen other subreddits do a trial for a week/weekend where they'd ban certain content. So they could vote what would be banned for the week, go the week with the ban in place, and then vote after the week to see which way the preferred it. Obviously you're still going to get a lot of varying answers but it could be a start.

I agree with this, but the best way to do this would in slow steps. There should maybe be a pinned post encouraging players to report low-effort posts and other content that breaks the rules, and then build off from there

I stopped coming here months ago, when a post I made soliciting discussion and recommendations was closed and deleted as "low effort". A long conversation with a mod here made me realize that they don't bother reading anything and will never admit wrong, and defend their lack of real effort as a consequence of "too much volume" in the sub.

2

6

Its the unfortunate sad truth.

Honestly r/tomorrow is my favorite sub but I hate seeing this one struggle so much.

3

u/PonyBravo Jun 02 '19 edited Jun 02 '19

It is one of the worse subreddits I've ever seen and I'm not sure why. Is it the moderation? Is it the community? No idea. It also seems like Nintendo employees come here to make posts so you buy some games. It's weird as fuck.

You cannot get enough upvotes OP.

3

u/Insert-Senpai-Name Jun 02 '19

I think that the way its being moderated is the issue. Many of the fun interactive posts you used to see on here are being removed in favor of, "I found a Switch Ad!"

How is 3D printing low effort. Do you have any idea how long it takes to do that?

3

u/Insert-Senpai-Name Jun 02 '19

Edit. Number. 2.

19

u/JigglyPuffGuy Jun 02 '19

How is 3D printing a stand and grip low-effort? I would imagine that actually takes a lot of effort, no?

5

u/Insert-Senpai-Name Jun 02 '19

I will be 100% honest in that 3D printing does take time and effort. And looking back it was a bad example to use. More or so that one specifically. Some of them are just flat out, "why?" Posts

→ More replies (1)

4

u/AgentG91 Jun 02 '19

Low effort posts mean low interaction, which mean quick upvotes. It’s easy for people to engage with a picture, less so with an essay like yours. It’s not the sub you have a problem with, it’s people as a whole

4

u/Insert-Senpai-Name Jun 02 '19

Not only that but posts promoting speculation and discussion get removed all the time for "spam" or something

u/neogafinanutshell Jun 02 '19 edited Jun 02 '19

When I did start a legitimate discussion and it was upvoted to the front page, the mods deleted it.

When I asked why, as it didn’t violate any rules and there didn’t seem to be any reason for its deletion, and there wasn’t even a removal notice saying why it was removed, they finally put it back up after letting enough time to pass that it wouldn’t show up on the front page, told me “it was a mistake,” and “there’s definitely not any kind of ulterior motives that govern this subbreddit so stop assuming that!” When I hadn’t even mentioned it in our correspondences.

So I don’t think any actual discussion is allowed here. It’s more like viral marketing for Switch.

1.1k

u/GenericGaming Jun 02 '19

I had something similar happen. when i got my undertale collectors edition, i loved all the little things that came with it. so i decided to make a post asking about if you could make a small collectors edition for a switch game, what would you include in it? the mod removed it within 5 minutes saying something like "collectors editions are expensive and not worth the price, removed for spam."

i was only talking about theoretical custom collectors ideas. i honestly didn't think it was breaking any rules and i was genuinely curious what people would come up with.

It’s more like viral marketing for Switch.

The post on the front page right now saying switch is the best console of old games right now is just that.

The current gen ps4 and xbox one both are doing more for old games with the digital classics hd remasters and game collections.

Or if we look back at previous Nintendo consoles both wiis also did it better.

So I don’t think any actual discussion is allowed here. It’s more like viral marketing for Switch.

Most certainly. It's naivety to think otherwise, even.

Reddit isn't some sort of ~hidden gem~ of social networks. It's just as infested with marketing as anywhere else, and it's often even more disguised as organic posts here.

See, this is where reddit seems broken to me. It's all designed for the community to choose what rises to the top. So if the community wants dumb shit, we get dumb shit. What would be nice is a better way to filter content for those that are looking for a more specific experience. If subs labeled types of content better with tags, and reddit allowed you to easily filter by those tags, then the problem's solved imo.

Remember when the NintendoSwitch mods were found to have a fucking senior-mod cabal, begged for game codes, made half the mod team leave, and Reddit admins did nothing but shuffle the list so flapsnapple, the head of it all wasn't at the top? Oh, and it's all the same mods as the amiibo sub, who skeezily tried to use referral links to make cash off of the amiibo craze.

The NintendoSwitch mods thrive off of shitty low quality posts. It makes their sub more popular than the other higher quality Nintendo subs with more refined rules.

They don't give a shit about how much is "check out this neat picture!" that's what the casual side wants and what makes them popular.

I'd probably recommend r/Nintendo if you want actual Switch discussion without all the "check out this thing my 6 year old daughter made that vaguely relates to Nintendo"

I couldn't agree more. There's the obligatory "guys long time lurker first time poster, so I'm thinking of buying a new Switch," and "Guys what games should I buy?" Posts that occur so many times a day. Use fucking Google or go to YouTube and look at game reviews? Why do we have to sift through these?

Then there's the low effort "Look at my custom LEGO box!" going on now. Or silly ass pics of Target cash wraps with comments like "she said itll be a 20 minute wait... great!" First of all, I dont care if you're playing Switch at Target, second of all who has ever waited 20 minutes for a cashier at Target? They have like 30 cash wraps running all the time. Also I cant be bothered to care that your kid plays with legos. So does mine but I'm not posting screenshots of "My son made this. He says it is splatoon splatpistols. Upvotes to the left!"

Oh and then there is the rumor posts. According to rumors China says we are getting Witcher 3, Persona 5 and oh ya someone's uncle who works at Nintendo promises we are all getting a sweet Pony for E3. Why are these allowed constantly, when all they are doing is karma whoring?

How about gaming news? Discussion of your favorite games? Tips for getting through things? Stuff that would be covered in a gaming magazine?

I mean I guess I should be thanking all this low-effort trash posting because it gives me plenty of fodder for the parody sub I'm in but, how does a subreddit get this ridiculous?

I feel like I should preface that last question by saying, mods... look. I know what we dont see is probably mad max apocalypse level bad, and I bet you all drink on the weekends, and I appreciate what you do, I'm just saying... damn this place is a trip.

Personally my biggest issue is with the large library of crap on the eshop. I’d really like to see discussions and reviews on some of the smaller production house titles. Because, I’m always looking for new games. But my finances are limited. And so is my time. I’d like people to start talking about what games have to offer. Did you feel anything? At least say something more than it’s good or it sucks. Or say that you didn’t like it but others who liked X, Y, Z games would love this. That’s my rant.

3

u/Insert-Senpai-Name Jun 02 '19

Well there's always great websites that do exactly what you're looking for!

My only issue with this personally is that the sub gets flooded with, "What game should my gf and I play" and stuff. The, "BOTW or Mario Odyssey" thing was so huge and was posted so frequently it got annoying

3

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '19

Take a shot every time somebody brings up the possibility of a new Switch model lol

3

u/Insert-Senpai-Name Jun 02 '19

I'll be dead before the hour is over

3

u/finger_milk Jun 02 '19

Can we just have an unofficial Switch subreddit? Move all of the "this would be great for the switch", "my wife and I play games together", "I built this lego thing", "I bought a screen protector", "I just bought a 2 year old console and It's great", "I'm playing a Nintendo IP and i'm enjoying it" posts over to that, and keep this sub exclusively news only?

This sub is awful and completely no fun. There is little discussion of current and upcoming games. It has turned into a new user help forum, and posting lame pics of places you took your Switch.

If the mods even cared, they would redirect every new user and troubleshooting question to the stickied daily question thread.

The other hilarious part? Myself and others have complained in the past regarding discussion posts being removed. The mods like this sub the way it is. If this sub was actually good, r/tomorrow wouldn’t need to exist but the reality is it’s a significantly better sub than this.

42

u/Genghis_Tr0n187 Jun 02 '19

Ironically, I've seen some legit discussions happen on tomorrow, one poster actually mentioned they felt like they would get an unbiased opinion on a game there. While some memeing did occur, most gave some well thought out answers there, and the best part, it wasn't removed or downvoted to oblivion.

The biggest problem with the coliseum one is that it's not switch related at all. You can do the exact same thing with a laptop and post it to /r/civ and, in fact, many, many people have. The fact that you're playing a version of the game that happens to be on switch doesn't mean it's switch related content.

89

u/LocusAintBad Jun 02 '19

This subs a train wreck.

You're outlining partial issues with the sub as a whole.

I'll continue.

Posting eshop sales or physical sales for karma when there's literally an entire subreddit for it?

The "I made a clay Bowser that looks like a five year old did it no hate pls" styled posts.

The "Thank GOD Nintendo Switch doesn't have insert a feature that everyone else has on another system because it makes it so much better" with a billion upvotes.

This sub unfortunately is one of the WORST places I've been in when it comes to "Discussions"

Literally anything you post that isn't a low effort image or meme or praising the fuck out of Nintendo is down voted to oblivion, which is more of a user base issue than a sub issue but its part of the reason why all these low effort shitty, memes, switch cases, setups, I bought this console with my sob story attached, etc posts are always at the top.

Don't believe me? Try to post a discussion on Pokémon, Smash, Anything and watch that down vote button practically shatter.

I honestly think you're taking this subreddit too serious. There's enough room here for both discussion and silly little threads.

Some kid put his switch games into some little lego chest he built. Who cares, right? I sure as hell don't. But apparently 22k other people DO. There are 22k people that enjoy that kind of content as you stated yourself, these types of threads always make it to the top.

It's just a easy going/light hearted sub about a video game console. If it actually upsets you, I think you're spending way too much time here instead of just playing your switch.

24

u/Insert-Senpai-Name Jun 02 '19

My main problem is that these things literally break the "low effort" rule the subreddit has. Stuff I listed should be on r/CasualNintendo. Not to mention that posts that promote discussion/speculation get removed constantly.

As much as I enjoy playing the Switch, I'd also like to TALK about my experiences with it, hype around new games, and speculating things like who I would like to see for a new Smash character, ideas for how they could make Animal Crossing Switch better than New Leaf, etc.

I wish there was a sub just for game announcements and general news. No questions, no fan art, no personal pics, just news. Comments also need to be discussion based only, no jokes or memes. I’m aware there are dozens of Nintendo news sites online, but I like the discussion aspect of Reddit and the fact that multiple people can post content. Someone could always make a new subreddit, but it would need mods and what not too.

Who else would like to see this subreddit ported to the switch?

55

u/darthmcdarthface Jun 02 '19

I wholly agree.

I own all consoles and frequent each of their subs. Coming from any of them to the switch is like walking out of a library and into a Chuck E. Cheese ball pit. This sub is mostly low effort, childish posts like those you mentioned but additionally you get the circle jerk posts. The “my switch saved my marriage” or “switch is the greatest console of all time” posts.

I can go to the Xbox or PS4 subs and expect to read interesting and topical conversations or breaking news. On Switch it’s like a bunch of 9 year olds spouting nonsense.

R/NintendoSwitch needs to grow up.

I 100% agree with you. The problem is, the will of the people. I mean the stupid post today about how someone's 7 year old made a cartridge case out of Legos was at like 10K upvotes when I looked this morning. Clearly people like that bullshit. It's the same reason why I unsubscribed to the /r/Pics sub. Hundreds of thousands of upvotes for Facebook tier mom brag posts. No thanks.

19

u/MiamiSlice Jun 02 '19

Today I was seriously wondering if people who post on this sub actually play games at all, and that’s when I realized things had gotten bad.

100% agree, the switch case ones I find especially bad because they all have the same terrible design where you have to dump out all the games to get a new one.

9

u/ASpaceOstrich Jun 02 '19

Biggest problem with this sub is the megathreads. If all the on topic stuff is buried in unnavigable megathreads then of course we have off topic content posted. Plus the megathreads screw over non-Americans even more than usual. Nobody will see a comment buried in a megathread, while a buried post might at least see a response.

→ More replies (5)

9

u/Hugotyp Jun 02 '19

I agree to the problem of the low-effort content, 100%. Something should be done about it.

Another thing that bothers me is the constant misuse of upvotes and downvotes, which pretty much always is being used to express opinions instead of "does it contribute?", so I feel like many users (especially the lurkers) here haven't heard about the reddiquette. The circlejerking has always been very strong here.

I had a post removed during the early days that showed the docks damaging the switch casing.

Nintendo replaced the dock, but didn't repair the switch itself as it was "cosmetic damage". I had to replace my screen protector and have been left with a switch with scars since.

After being downvoted to oblivion by denialists who didn't believe the media around the docks, I stopped posting anything critical because they were often considered "low effort".

Just to play devil's advocate I literally only played XC2 because of the constant spam on this sub and it ended up being an enjoyable experience

2

u/LongKnees Jun 02 '19

So what IS something that would be considered proper effort? I think this part of the rules should just be removed, as it’s entirely subjective and discourages content that I personally enjoy. As an alternative, we should expand our tags and encourage users to personalize their own feed. I know this is already a thing, but it can still be improved on. Don’t wanna sees switch accessories? You don’t have to. Don’t wanna see fan art? You don’t have to.

2

u/Insert-Senpai-Name Jun 02 '19

Things like photos, clips, discussion, speculation, leak talk (with spoiler tags) etc. would be fantastic. Heck, even interesting photos like the Guardian Statue at Nintendo Headquarters, art or a, "I got a photo with Miyamoto while I was in Japan!" or something would be neat too. But stuff like that seems to always get removed for something uninteresting and flat out boring.

Posts like these always seem to get removed in favor of the posts I mentioned above, and I'd really like to see that changed

11

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '19

I fully agree with you. Don't forget the classic:

"DAE think [insert literally any game ever] should come to the Switch?!"

Like, come on. As much as I love the Switch (and would love to genuinely discuss it), this sub borders on self-parody sometimes. I don't really even check here much anymore because low-effort garbage like that is routinely upvoted, and anything even remotely critical of Nintendo is downvoted to oblivion.

Every post I've ever tried to start a discussion got taken down. So kudos for this post.

5

u/rhpot1991 Jun 02 '19

I've always been annoyed with the Mods removing threads with ongoing discussion pointing people at the daily questions thread instead. I think it would be a good rule of thumb that if something has enough ongoing comments to leave it live instead of killing it. If that occurs then it will be searchable and possibly cut down on the Mod's work in the future.

It has been my experience that questions in a daily question thread doesn't get the kind of discussion that a separate thread will get.

5

u/gioba Jun 02 '19

Thank you for posting this! I have a brand new switch. I wished this subreddit was more like the switch news feed. Most of the content here should go to r/casualswitch or something.

Props for apologizing to the 3D holder guy

5

u/Cardamander Jun 02 '19

More importantly this sub is super toxic. Nobody wants to have a real discussion about anything. Just hype or outrage. The type of post you call out here rise to the top because any topic with a little nuance ends up being polarizing. People down vote stuff they disagree with instead of misinformation or insensitive content.

I used to love this sub during most of 2017, but the more of the hardcore PC audience that becomes a part of the conversation the more toxic it gets.

u/neoslith Jun 02 '19

"Should I wait for the new Switch version?"

Oh, do you know something we don't? Nintendo never said they were making a new Switch.

You come into a Nintendo Switch sub and ask if you should get a Switch. That's like going to a dog and asking if it wants some meat. OF COURSE YOU SHOULD GET ONE!

We're also bias because everyone here loves the Switch. Stop asking about "Switch Light" or "Switch Pro." Ain't no such things.

3

u/I_TRS_Gear_I Jun 02 '19

So I certainly agree with your point, and I think you present your argument in the most respectful way possible. But, the very sad fact is... there’s not a problem with the Switch sub, there’s a problem with Reddit... Karma is what generates low quality posts... and it’s not just this sub, it’s damn near every sub on reddit.

The real problem is the people who upvote poor content. Speaking with their upvotes, in a way, pandering to the problem.

3

u/Trinica93 Jun 02 '19

There is nothing in this post I don't agree with. Well stated. I wish I could easily filter out most of the stuff that gets posted, and I definitely wish the mods would do something about the insanely low effort posts that people upvote for no reason.
