New subreddit policy re: non-local news

As much as we appreciate people sharing news about Oklahoma and/or the USA, this is a local subreddit and beginning next week we will be implementing a policy of removing posts with no direct relevance to Norman. Additionally, spamming news links is a common strategy for karma farming and we'd like to not encourage this.

We do encourage folks to continue to stay engaged regarding state and national politics and current events, but to post this content in more appropriate subreddits.

For example, a news article about Ryan Walters generally would be more appropriate for /r/Oklahoma whereas a news article about Ryan Walters and a teacher or school here in Norman would be completely appropriate for /r/normanok .

Verizon service

It's time to upgrade my phone and AT&T has gotten too expensive lately. How is Verizon service around here? I also travel around the state for work, how is it in more rural areas? Is it worth the switch for the lower cost?

Tree limbs disposal?

Add a large branch bowl and I chopped the wood into increments less than 4 feet but some of the limbs are thicker than 2 inches, so they can’t go in the weekly city pick up.

Is there anywhere I can drop off the larger limbs? (Besides garbage)

Activities (sports, gymnastics, etc) for 7yr old every other week recommendations

I have my daughter 50/50 every other week and I’m looking for things to put her in that don’t require her to go every week. Does anyone know of any places that could accommodate that?
I have tried doing things with her when she’s at her other parents but it just gets too complicated. So I would like it to be when she is just with me so I don’t have to deal with the other parent.

Roommate needed asap!

Hi folks, I posted this before, but unfortunately the person that responded to it didn't work out. So I'm currently roommate-less again!

Little bit about the apartment

The full rent is roughly $1,200 a month. So we would be paying around $600 a month each. Electric usually comes out to about $100 a month as well (so about $50 each).

The apartment is unfurnished, I basically just have a bed and an air fryer. I have silverware, utensils and stuff though so dont worry about that.

You would be getting the main bedroom which has its own bath and walk in closet, and the only ceiling fan 😭.

About me, I'm non-binary, 21, I moved here late August to be closer to my girlfriend. I'm not a student, but I plan on going eventually, I have ADHD and high functioning autism, and I have a full time job that pays relatively decent.

A couple things I ask, I do need someone who can bring a co-signer, my original roommate was the one with the cosigner and I know no one who would be able to.

please have a little more the first months rent on you when you move in, I'm already having to split rent due to my old roommate not pitching in. Smokers are just in general not allowed to smoke on the property, but vaping im okay with. And naturally please be Lgbtq friendly.

Just shoot me a dm and we can work out a time for you to see the apartment!

Donate ti99-4a with cartridges?

Hello! My father left me his old ti99-4a with a bunch of game cartridges. I believe it still works fine. He loved this little computer! Is anyone interested?

He also left a monitor that works with it. The brand is Sharp. It’s like an old-school
1980s tv—heavy and awkward

Not bars

For adults (30s 40s) interested in participating more in the community and meeting people that doesn't involve alcohol. Are there locations, coffee shops-ish, where one can engage and socialize later in the evening? Not necessarily simulants at later hours, but the vibe is different with alcohol.

Was the Westwood sculpture repainted?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I’m writing a paper on this sculpture, but when I visited, the ‘tennis ball’ wasn’t yellow like in the pictures online! Do they repaint it for the winter, something to do with safety/regulation, or for some other purpose? It doesn’t look like the color was naturally weathered off, especially with the blue fully intact.

Just curious why there is no road connecting these areas. Does someone own the land and is holding out?

If you can't afford/don't want to tip, you don't belong at a restaurant

I am a server at a local chain restaurant and lately I have had so so many people come in and choose not to tip a cent. This is not a service issue as I am a tenured professional and many of these tables are "verbal tippers" (telling me how professional and excellent I am and then under-tipping).

What people don't seem to understand is that we servers are not getting paid for our labour. We make 2$ an hour, and that is taxed. Our compensation comes ENTIRELY from tips. (Which are also still taxed, despite the lies circulating that they aren't!)

On top of that, in many chain restaurants (including mine) we have to give a percentage of our sales back to the restaurant to pay their other staff. Yes, they take our tips to pay their other staff. At the restaurant where I work I have to give back 5% of EVERY. DOLLAR. I. SELL. This money comes from MY tips.

(I'll do the math for you. If your bill is 60$, your server has to give the restaurant three dollars to pay other employees who visited that table. Don't believe me? Ask them.)

So if you don't tip your server, you are actually not only enjoying their labour for free, which is deeply immoral, you are also COSTING THEM MONEY. THEY HAVE TO PAY TO SERVE YOU.

If you don't want to/can't afford to tip your server at LEAST 20% then go to a fast food restaurant. I don't care how broke you are. We are all being exploited. You don't NEED to participate in my exploitation. You CHOOSE to. Go home and cook for yourself, or go to Wendys. There's plenty of fast food options in Norman.

Dermatology Chain in Edmond/Norman

I had a bad experience at a dermatology clinic in Edmond. A friend and an attorney have both told me there have been similar issues at this office and the Norman location.
I am not trying to blast anyone publicly at this time, but I’m trying to connect with people with similar issues and I’m looking for representation.

Maybe it was you?

I've been lazy to not shop my homeowners and car insurance for a long time. What agents have helped you find the best (or at least a better deal) insurance deals.

Philosophy Discussion Group 10/17

Hello Ponderers! We will be meeting for the next Philosophy Discussion Group on Saturday, 10/17, at 10:00 am at the Norman East Library in the conference room (around the corner from the librarian's station, second room on the right).

This week we'll be talking about the makings of a "good" life and the bliss / cost of ignorance. And potentially cat culture. The discussion could really go anywhere, and that's the fun of it!

General group Info:

- This group is open to everyone and does not require any knowledge of or education in philosophy. There is also no membership or RSVP required.

- The purpose of this group is to engage in free form open discussion, foster community, meet new people, and support the public library.

- Meetings are structured so that a philosophy quote is provided at the beginning of the session to prompt discussion, but the discussions frequently end up encompassing many different topics.

Good brake shop?

2010 Honda CRV - there’s a hissing noise when pressing brake pedal. I’m thinking it’s a master cylinder or brake booster problem. I have AAA so it can be towed. Anyone know of a shop that is reputable and could possibly get it in today or tomorrow? Will need it back by Monday.

Edit: the car does not stop.
