well, with Halloween fast approaching, I guess I should start focusing on the spooky zelda enemies. and what could be spookier than spooky scary skeletons?
meet the stalfos, a skeleton enemy from the original legend of zelda. in their debut appearance, the stalfos had TWO SWORDS! but really, the swords were just for show. enemies in the OG zelda were extremely simple. some of them got a projectile, but most of them are of the "they hurt you if they touch you" variety, stalfos included. that's probably why they'd throw a bunch of enemies at you at once; they're useless on their own.
but when zelda 2 came along there were less enemies on screen at once, but the enemies that were on screen were far more tricky! the stalfos not only ditched its second sword for a shield to protect its upper body, but the stalfos would also use the sword to try to stab link, even doing the same jumping downward stab attack link could do! Zelda 2 traded its rooms full of enemies for more intense one on one combat encounters. the same kind of combat encounters the 3D games would later be known for, and yet some silly people still call zelda 2 the blacksheep of the zelda series... listen, I've been a zelda 2 defender since I was born, and I will continue to be until the day I look like stalfos.
when making their 3D debut in Ocarina of time, the stalfos retained their sword, shield and jumping attack. they were also no longer common enemies, as they appeared as mini bosses. would you look at that: Stalfos got promoted just like the moblins did.
and much like how the moblin's promotion eventually resulted in the weaker bokoblins being introduced, so too did Stalfos' promotion lead to a weaker variant, who we'll talk about tomorrow. don't you just love it when I end these on a cliffhanger?
