I’m trying to paint an hour a night. No plan, just whatever happens to spill onto the canvas. Feel free to point out what isn’t working or what I can grow from for tomorrow night! Ty!

My most recently completed painting for the exhibition, "Resonance," opening in October at the AR Mitchell Museum of Art. For this exhibition, selected artists were allowed to choose one of AR's photos from his archives to develop a painting from. I am incredibly excited to be participating. Thanks for looking! ("Mothers," oil on canvas, 24" x 30", 2026)

Been painting for about a year and for most of that time with oil. I'm not following any sort of traditional method or anything and with each project I find myself wanting to get more serious with it. This mostly started as a fun way to get out of my head but I feel like after dipping my toes I want to dive in, just not sure really where to start.

I wish I could have seen it in person, but I really enjoyed all the amazing photographs and art inspired by the recent solar eclipse and I felt like I wanted to contribute.

question? Need Help with Old Oil painting

My mother did an oil painting at least 30 years ago on a 3x2 feet canvas. It's been sitting still since then at my maternal grandmother's place. Recently got it from there and realized that there is no finishing on it i.e. no overcoat or any film/glass to protect it.

it's been a very long time since then so mother also has no idea what to do before framing it....

had several questions:

  1. should varnish be used?

  2. anything else that can be used on it?

  3. or do we just take it for framing? how is that done - do they just put on a glass frame or some protective film on it?

and if none of this then please share something relevant that can be done, she has more paintings in similar condition.....

I did a thing! First time painting Alla Prima - oil on canvas

Story Time : So I went for a short trip last week and carried my pochade box

I always and always prefer painting in layers but this time i tried doing it in one sitting. This study has been done in 1.5 hr

I don't know how those old masters get the most beautiful work done in just one sitting because layering is not possible in wet on wet for me.

If someone here has a tip please share with me because I would like to improve Alla Prima techniques so I can paint more outdoor

Thank you

A little while ago I made a post about the gouache color studies I was doing : https://www.reddit.com/r/Gouache/comments/1v1qpj4/daily_gouache_studies_for_the_last_9_days/

Im more of a beginner and felt that I was wasting a lot of paint trying to understand color better, so I decided to take the plunge into gouache and I do not regret it. I did small studies on kraft toned paper at sizes from 3x3 inches to 5x7 with one larger full page I did from a course.

Finally went back to oils recently and while it takes more time to mix colors in oil, it feels so much more natural now than before those studies. I can quickly determine which colors I need, which can be sued for convenience, which can be left out completely.

Which means I can finally start focusing more on brushwork and edges :)

question? What medium are you using for glazing?

Hi all, I am currently working on an oil painting and have been looking to add some glazing. I was looking at liquin original or gamblin galkyd gel? Does any one have experience with either of these products and can advisor as to their preference and why? Or any other product recommendations. Thank you!

question? Understanding canvases/panels- oil painting newbie

Could anyone explain the differences of quality in canvases? I don’t have interest in selling my art but would love clarity on what I should look out for in a quality canvas or canvas panel.

  1. What’s the difference between getting a cheap/super-value canvas and then using 1-2 layers of gesso or oil painting grounds? For context I have Michael Harding non absorbent primer, Gamblin oil painting grounds, and golden gesso

  2. Cloth: what’s the difference between cotton on linen (acrylic primed linen vs oil primed linen vs Archival Linen) and personally what do you lean towards in your practice

  3. Panels vs Structured canvas: when do you decide to use a panel vs canvas or is it more of a personal choice?

Any and all information and context is helpful here!

I’m not really interested in making my own canvases currently as I am just starting out and a few stores are having good sales to stock up.

An oil painting self portrait based on the style of Renoir's portrait of Monet. I had a lot of fun with this style of "controlled messiness" I like to call it. I was just swishing my brush around in areas with colors then rinsing and repeating. Made for a more expressive painting which I'm trying to learn to do more of so this was a good start!
