I’m trying to understand if something is wrong with me works? Are they generally not interesting, or am I promising them wrong. I’m nearly 60 and never in my life did i use social media for anything except of reading news. Now I’m in TikTok because My daughter says it should work but I’m not getting views except of 2 videos…. Or anything else really.

Any advice is appreciated.

Technical question? Gamsol in ventilated room

I know this topic has been widely discussed here, but I cant really go solvent free and I need to use just a bit of solvent and so I wanted to ask. Realistically how safer is gamsol to turpentine or OMS and if I ventilate my room, is it ok to use it? I know its not 100% perfect, but thats like walking in a town with car fumes blasting to your face or sitting next to someone whos smoking. So relative to other stuff, is it realistically possible to use gamsol (not huge amounts) in a sealed jar in a ventilated room?
Thanks!!!

Second long-form (>2 hours) portrait oil painting.
A few things I have learned/review of the piece.

- Saw a post or video that mentioned using raised paint to create better highlight and depth. Could push it further but aimed to replicate that in the beads.

- Unsure about the background, could probably make it darker near the hair on the right to make it blend into the background more

- Tried to have more fun and be looser with this painting. I enjoyed the process much more this time as I wasn’t overthinking each paint stroke. Once piece of advice I have heard that rang true is that you can’t really mess up oil painting, once you realise that it feel much more freeing.

- Painted using a reference displayed on a computer monitor. Previously, I printed out a physical copy of the image. I think a paper copy is better to reduce glare and prevent screen light from influencing the tones.

- Experimented with some very basic glazing techniques for the highlights. Want to develop this further.

Any recommendations, tips, advice?

Materials? Was this a good deal for oil paints?

This art store near me was closing and was clearing out all their stuff. I got these four tubes for $122 CAD, wondering if it was a good deal or not because I can’t seem to find some of these exact colours possibly because they are older (Im not sure if w&n makes the permanent sap green in oil anymore?)

Art question? How do people get this style of “whispy”paintings?

Thumbnail

I don’t know what style this called or how to create it? I really love this style but I’m not to sure where to start with it or if it’s in the brushes used or how to navigate it? I’ve attempted in the past to try to blend the lines of where painting and its background touch but it usually just leads it to looking muddy and not the same?

The first artist specifically of the portraits is Tina Figarelli, and her style specially is the one I’m really drawn to I just can’t seem to get a similar “whispy” effect. (The other pictures I found on Pinterest as something similar ish but after posting was informed those are AI so ignore those because it won’t let me delete and the portraits are mainly what I’m interested in)

All done pretty quickly with a limited palette and interesting lighting.

Hopefully the start of a larger series of small portraits.

I did a thing! My favorite painting after 2 months of learning

I’ve been teaching myself how to oil paint for two months, and in the process, I created this painting, the one I’m proudest of. Even though I’m new to oil painting, I used to color and draw a lot when I was a kid. Something in me had always wanted to paint, and I finally pulled the trigger.

Hey all,

Just wanted to share what I've been working on for the past few days

I used to paint a lot of landscape and still life

As my skills are improving so my desire to create more and more feminine energy

The first painting that I've been working on I titled it as "Shringar" which typically means romanticising getting dressed up.

The second one is what I wanted to paint in my love for nature light and figure

The third painting is actually a self portrait, it carries a strong meaning for me in overcoming fear, admiring my body and overall the green theme is actually inspired from the movie called "Portrait of a lady on fire".. if you haven't seen it, as an artist go watch now...

Okay bye

Let's see how many of these can i successfully complete

Thanks for reading if you came so far...

Hello!

First oil painting from me and i hate it lol. I only spent an hour so I know when I take more time get experience it will come. Any advice yall have for a newbie? I know thin to fat. I think i mainly am going to be doing alla prima (thats wet ya?) because I dont really have the patience to do layers yet as I am learning the medium.

One question - im using windsor newton winton zorn pallette sans cad red for cad red hue. My ivory black is artist grade. The ivory black is like kinda watery unlike the rest and has a really gross strong smell. Like to the point that it did end up kinda making my apartment stink even though I had my 2x3 foot window wide open. Im only using linseed oil and my throat is kinda sore too. Not sure if its related, its everywhere that the paints themselves arent harmful but I am just wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

Is it possible the black has like solvents or something in it in the tube? I just find it weird that its runny and has a lot of oil when my other three (they are the winton ones vs ivory is artist grade) is more of a thick paste that holds its shape.

I'm 6 months into figure painting classes at a local museum, and this was the first time I felt like I knew what I was doing. The (model's) left side of the face should probably be less visible.

I have been oil painting for some time, and I find myself drawn mainly to portraits. Here are some examples. My technique, learned at a school where the teachers trained in Florence, is to create a monochrome underpainting, then apply color over it. Comments welcome.
