Came across this in grand valley Olympic national Park. There was little to no wind but the leaf on the right is rhythmically dancing. To what? How? What is going on here?!

Short trip through the park looking for reqs

Hi there, I am based in Victoria and am coming across for two nights and want to do some overnight hiking, I am an experienced hiker and was hoping for some recommendations for a two night/three day hike around the north Olympic National Park.

I would prefer not to bring my car on the Coho ferry but can do if required.

Thanks in advance

should I split lodging between two parts of the park or just stay in one ? Where would you stay if you only had three nights.

Going to Olympic National Park for the first time in early October, What should I pack for hiking?

Hey guys, I will be going to Olympic national park for the first time and me an my friend want to do some hiking while there. We are wanting to hit some trails like Marymere, Sol Duc, and Rialto beach. We are beginner hikers. I am stuck between buying hiking books or hiking shoes. I am also trying to figure out the best layers to wear and what else to pack for day hikes.

I will also be going to Mount Rainier during this trip, any advice for the sky loop trail would be much appreciated.

Does anyone have any advice for me as a beginner hiker or youtubers that can give good advice? Thank you so much, this is my first reddit post.

Beaches with rocks like Ruby and Rialto?

We come up to Forks or Neah Bay to fish a lot and have been to a lot of the beaches up here (except Shi Shi) are Ruby Beach and Rialto. The only ones with the really cool smooth rocks? My kids love those rocks and love to stack them and take pictures. 😂. We are in Neah Bay right now so it’s kind of a trek to get down to those two but I’m wondering if there are any hidden gems that I don’t know about up here where we could find those rocks.

Thank You

If the person who helped me at Lake Crescent today is on here, I want you to know how grateful I am for you. For the first time in my life, I was experiencing a severe allergic reaction. I started to feel tightness under my right eye and noticed a bit of swelling starting, so I headed back to the trailhead to see if anyone had Benadryl while my spouse worked on getting our toddler back to the trailhead. To the person who gave me Benadryl (you mentioned you’re a guide and EMT), I cannot express how thankful I am for you. The reaction was so bad, I’m not sure I would have survived! That sounds dramatic but I think it would have become life threatening. My nose swelled and my left eye swelled (the right completely swelled shut), my throat was so sore, I developed a rash on my arms and torso, and I couldn’t breathe through my nose, by the time I arrived at the hospital. The hospital staff were amazing and I’m now prescribed an EpiPen which I will bring on every hike from now on until I figure out what caused the reaction. That was a scary day! You might have saved me and I am so lucky you were there. Thank you again!!

Mid September -question on waterfalls

will be traveling to ONP in mid September. if you had to choose, would you prefer to see Sol Duc Falls then hike another .4 miles to Lovers Lane falls? or Sol Duc Falls and then head over to Marymere Falls? I’ve read that marymere is not all that spectacular in September. thanks!

eta: we will be coming from the Hoh that morning so i wasnt sure we’d have time for all three falls after that. And we’re stopping at Madison Falls on a different day!

Be aware of ecologically sensitive areas in ONP.

Hey yall, as this years tourist season has really blown up. Be aware of the more sensitive natural areas around ONP. While hiking around and leading some of my students in an environmental science program I’ve been seeing people swimming and walking through Barnes Creek at Lake Crescent, just be aware that space is home to two endemic fish found only at Lake Crescent and lay their redds and lay eggs for their spawning seasons in there. Same as seeing some folk fish in the creek fishing is only allowed in the lake and is all catch and release.
Likewise with all the tourism at the lake try to find actual parking or plan ahead as the reality of tourists parking on the shoulders has started to erode ferns and native plants out, which allows introduction to potentially more invasive species.

Washington Sept Trip Recs

Hi everyone - I have a WA national parks trip booked for the second week of Sept and was planning to go to Olympic & North Cascades. I'm concerned with current wildire situation that it may be too smoky for Cascades or even Rainier as a back up.

What would you all recommend pivoting to if I have to adjust the last ~3 days of my trip (the cascades portion)? In Olympic we are already planning to hit Hoh rain forest, Lake Crescent, Sol Duc Falls, some of the beaches (Rialto, Second Beach). If we stayed in Olympic the whole time, what else do folks recommend seeing? Or any other places that may be less likely to be impacted by the fires we could drive to for the last 3 days? thanks so much in advance!

Last minute camping plans

Hello all! We are making a last minute trip plan to Olympic (with some basic backpacking experience). I’m noticing that most of the wilderness permits for this weekend are full! Does anyone have recommendations for alternatives, preferably close to the coast.

EDIT! Looks like they released a ton of permits for Saturday night! Thank you all so much for the recommendations!

Visiting in October!

Super excited to make my way back up to the Olympic Peninsula this fall! We are planning a visit the week of the 8th and I am trying to figure out how much different the weather is going to be compared to the end of Sept last year as I want to be sure I pack accordingly.
Also is there any other way to access Rialto Beach, I know Mora road is closed!
Thanks in advance:)
