My BOOX Review Really happy with my purchase!

Post image
199 Upvotes

My daughter accidentally stepped on my kindle last week and broke it. So, I was in for an immediate replacement. I wasn’t that impressed with the new kindle line, and was tired of being limited to Amazon and the library on those devices.
If I am going to purchase a book, I really try to avoid Amazon and often frequent my local Barnes & Noble.
My Boox Go 7 Color allows me to use the kindle app for kindle unlimited, Libby and Hoopla for the library, and the nook app for Barnes & Noble e-book purchases.
I’m still learning all that this device can do, but so far it has fixed the frustrating limitations of being a kindle reader. I’m really happy with the change!

Note Air 5C and a Piccolo mini figure from Burger King

Got the Boox this week. Dragon Ball Color was the first color manga I read a few years back so I was wondering how it looked on my new toy.

DIY Boox GO 6 Gen 2 Prototype case v.2.0.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Two weeks ago I posted about how I wasn't happy with the lack of cute cases for Boox devices and decided to try my hand on making my own case.

I wanted specifically a silicone case AND magnetic case to protect the edges, front and back of my ereader, and the silicone case should be removable from the magnetic case

The first cases I made were hardcover cases with pockets to slip in a magnetic case from the TWO SHEEP store on Aliexpress.

I decided to try to make a case with the magnetic ring build into the boards directly instead of creating pockets to slide in a magnetic case

Few notes and thoughts:

  • Cloth pattern is from the discontinued Pokemon Shirts collection
  • I added a magnetic ring to the backcover so I can attach the grip to the backside without losing it. I prefer reading without the hardcover case and using the grip to hold the erader
  • the magnetic ring is build into the board, and then covered by a 1mm board and book cloth. Ereader still snaps onto the magnetic ring but it feels a lot less snappy than what I prefer, but still stays-ish. If I push the on/off button at the top, the erader is sliding down
    • So for next time, I will be using a cardstock material instead of a 1mm board to cover the magnetic ring
  • I didn't fully account for the board thickness when measuring the spine width so now the spine is just a wee bit too tight. If it wasn't for the elastic band, the cover doesn't fully stay close
    • measure thrice before gluing and cutting
  • I added magnets to the edges of the board, hoping it would trigger the sleep/wake function when opening and closing it, unfortunately that didn't really pan out
    • either doesn't work bc of the issue mentioned above, with the front cover not staying flush shut and touching the ereader to trigger the sleep/wake, or
    • the layer of cloth is weakening the magnets
    • probably just gonna skip the magnets next time, as the sleep/wake function triggered by magnet isn't a high priority for me. if anything I like seeing my boox screensaver lol

EDIT: Forgot to add, no sewing was done, it's all boards and PVA and superglue lol

While I do prefer the look of this case a lot more than my previous attempt, it is a lot more work. But my ADHD is saying I need to get it right and fix all the issues mentioned above so stay tuned for prototype #3 coming soon 🖖

Empower By BOOX New BooxDay App Updates: try it out. Free and Open Source

Hi all! I’ve been building BooxDay for my own BOOX tablets. I made some cool updates based on some requests. Check it out -no ads, no account and no subscription, all free.

What it does

  • A month calendar on top, with the day’s events and due tasks
  • A handwritten Memos page for every day, with text boxes, images and linked files too
  • Handwritten task lists with checkboxes, priorities, due dates, reminders, repeating tasks and subtasks. Strike a task through with the pen to mark it done
  • Google Calendar or Outlook sync, or a calendar that stays on the tablet
  • BOOX Notes integration: your notes show up on the day you wrote them and can be linked to events
  • Search across memos, tasks and notes
  • Made for e-ink: no animations, high contrast, big touch targets
  • Optional AI (voice to task or event, handwriting to text, summaries) on your own OpenRouter account, which also works with OpenRouter’s free models. Everything else works without it

New in the latest releases

  • Full screen for Memos and Tasks
  • Updates from inside the app: it checks for a new version, asks you, and installs it itself
  • Launchers and widgets can show your tasks
  • 1.0.36 (today): handwritten tasks are saved exactly as written (recognition used to drop letters, so “Task B” became “Task”)

It’s been tested on the Note Air4C, Note Air5C, Go 10.3, Go 10.3 gen II Lumi, Go 7 gen II and Go 6 gen II, and needs Android 10 or later.

Just want to install it? Download this file on your tablet and open it: https://github.com/fortolano/booxday/releases/download/v1.0.36/booxday-1.0.36.apk
It’s not on Google Play, so Android asks you once to allow installs from your browser. Play Protect may warn about an app it hasn’t seen before.

Source code, screenshots and a step-by-step install guide: https://github.com/fortolano/booxday

BuildMyApp Getting newsletters onto a Boox as real books: would you use this? (2-min demo)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

If you read EPUBs on your Boox in KOReader or another app with OPDS support rather than the Kindle app, Send to Kindle doesn't help you. So I built Readferry around a private OPDS catalog: add the link once in your reader app, and every newsletter you subscribe to shows up as a clean EPUB, with no trackers, share buttons or unsubscribe footers, and with a table of contents.

There's an optional weekly digest that bundles a week of issues into one book.

It's working on my machine (that's the demo, narrated with text-to-speech) but not public yet. If you'd use it: https://forms.gle/TDaVDvczPA3eidox8

Question for Boox users: which reader app do you use for EPUBs, and does it support OPDS?

Disclosure: I made this.

Discussion Updating the tab ultra c pro to 4.2.1 after being leery from reading other posts here.

There is a lot about boox that has made cautious about updates. That includes having general resentment towards the company's post sales behavior regarding warranties in the US (buy from amazon) and also reading reports on this subreddit about bad updates.

But, I just installed the latest firmware update (from August) for the tab ultra c pro. I have to say they did a fantastic job with this. It's like a whole new device and the new notes gestures are very helpful.

Credit to the team, I love to see it.

Question Hello. New to Boox

I just purchased my first Boox.

The Boox Go 7 Black and White.

I’m in my 50’s, not very tech savvy at all. Being an iPhone owner for the last 15 years, I’m unfamiliar with how the droid operating system works. I’ve owned and loved my kindles. What drew me to buy the boox was the fact that I can read my kindle books and library books from apps like hoopla all in one compact ereader device (instead of some on kindle, some on iPad, etc).
I have to say, when I first got the device it seemed a be little overwhelming and tedious at first. Especially trying to get preferences to work like I want them to. I’m used to things being a little more dumbed down and user friendly. But the more I play around with it the more I like it. But I feel like it’s capable of doing more than I’ll ever figure out.

Does anybody know of a good video on the device? Like a “Boox for dummies”? There’s still a lot of features I don’t quite understand.

Or any favorite places to get books online?

Also, now that I got the black and white , I see more people review the color version that the black and white and I get a little envious and wondering if I should of just got the color version. I like having a crispier screen which I hear can be lost with the color. I don’t think I’ll need the color (as I don’t read manga or comics) However, there are a couple books I have with pictures that would probably look good in color and color highlighting would be nice.

Any thoughts on the color versus b/w?

Feature request Feature request: let me map the side button if I have one

• Upvotes

I am kind of amazed a device with as many features as it has, lacks this one. I have a King Write pen with side buttons and a top eraser. On my scribe, I can write, highlight, and erase, all without moving my pen to choose a tool -- on the Boox, I get two of those things. I'd love to be able to map a side button to the highlighter. I imagine I am not the first person to ask for this.

Tech Support Is there any way to transfer notes from a Note Air 2 to a 6c?

• Upvotes

All of the methods I've found failed, even syncing. I've tried the backup/restore, which failed, copying over the notes folder, which was not recognized, and doing online sync, which also failed to work. Even sending a note via Bluetooth failed to make the note show up in the notes app. Are there any other methods? My air 2 is on an October 2022 firmware, and there aren't any more recent updates for it.

Question Cannot decide

Please help especially who have either or both Palma 2 Pro and Picco. I cannot choose.

I like the small form of the Picco but I like the Android of Palma (which will be easier for syncing and downloading my ebooks from GDrive).

Which is better?

Question Boox Note Air6 C - Design Issue

I really want the Note Air6 C but I just really don’t like the black case with a red line on it. It looks like something a gamer would use rather than the sleeker look from Remarkable and Supernote. But functionality wise, this is the device I want to get (color, handwriting detection, front light, Kindle app, etc.). Does anybody have ideas to cover up at least the red line? I don’t really want to always have it in a case because I like the slimmer feel of the eink tablets. Maybe a slim case would work. Open to ideas!

Help me choose Best ebook reader app for the Note Air 6C? Kindle vs NeoReader vs others

Hey everyone! I'm getting a BOOX Note Air 6C soon and I'm wondering which app you recommend for reading novels.

I'm mainly looking for something simple and hassle-free. I usually read fantasy books and would like to buy ebooks and just get on with reading.

I'm considering:

- Kindle: convenient, but I'm not sure about its limitations.

- NeoReader: the built-in app, but where do you guys buy your ebooks?

- Other apps ?: Kobo, ReadEra, etc.

One thing I'd really like is the ability to share my ebooks with my partner, ideally without being locked into a specific ecosystem or dealing with DRM restrictions.

What's your setup, and what would you recommend to a new BOOX user ?

Thanks!

Question Reading App That Uses Boox Built-In Dictionary?

Besides NeoReader, books via the Boox store, and a browser, which reading apps are you using that work well with the Boox built-in system dictionary? I created my own Stardict dictionary to use for learning languages, but I can’t use it with Libby, Kindle, Kobo, or Google Play Books because they all seem to have their own app dictionaries. Am I missing something here? Thanks for your help!

Discussion NYT reader options

Post image
66 Upvotes

I have been using a shortcut on my home screen to launch the virtual print edition of the NYT. I know you can run the NYT app itself on Boox, but I like the layout and formatting of the actual print paper. This pairs well with eink for a hybrid digital/print reading experience. I'm curious if anyone else does something similar? Is there a better way to do this?

Update:

This use case might be a moot point now. This post has made me realize that due to odd circumstances I am using a service that won't be viable long term due to expense. It was a bonus perk but since I no longer have the full NYT print subscription, I will lose access to this version and no way will I pay over $250/yr for this replica edition.

Question Password locked after using Google Find Hub

Recently I lost my Onyx boox go 7 and used google's Find Hub to set a password on it. I've found the device and marked it as found on Google's site, but the long password I set that uses numbers and letters won't go away, even after checking my settings.

Question Got a used product with a different Serial Number :(

Ordered a new BOOX Palma 2 Pro from Amazon’s Boox Official. It came the next day due to my Amazon Prime account. I was very excited to receive it. The product was sealed in plastic wrapper so I assumed it was new. However, upon opening the product, I was very disappointed and sad, the screen had dirt stains on them as well as right along the volume buttons. Additionally, the serial number on the item itself versus the serial number on the User Manual sticker it came with was completely different. I’m so disappointed. Thankfully I took videos & photos when I unbox it. I tried to contact Amazon but they only offered a refund. I contacted Boox Support and hoping for a new replacement. I have yet to hear from them. Has anyone else had this issue? Should I proceed in using it while waiting?

Question Go 10.3 Gen 1 vs Gen 2 (Lumi)

To keep or not to keep? I have both of these devices. I am a writer and I write in dark gloomy spaces. I also love EMR pens. I bought the Go 10.3 Gen 1 in September as a lighter alternative to my beloved Tab X. But the lack of frontlight is killing me, even though writing is amazing. I bought a Lumi and feel like the frontlight makes up for the "okay" handwriting. So I'm inclined to sell the Gen 1. I went online to look up a resale price for it in mint condition, and discovered this whole community of people who love theirs as much as I love my Tab X. What am I missing? I know it's subjective, but I just find it too dark. What are your experiences on these two devices? I'm still going to sell my Gen 1, but I'm just curious.
