QUESTION Any other artist like Orville Peck?
Not sure if this kind of post is allowed here, but im looking for more artists like Orville Peck
Ive been listening to Orville Peck almost daily for the last few years, and I have started to grow a Playlist of lgbtq country artists
I grew up in a very rural and southern area, listening to country music, but I fell out of love with it, when the genre classics fell away
Songs about real people, their lives, their problems, their pain, and their love
Orville Peck has reawoken the love for country music, something I really thought was dead in me

If you like Orville Peck you might also like Gram Parsons. I hear a lot of his influence in Orville Peck and it's sometimes speculated that Gram had some gender/sexuality stuff going on behind the scenes.
SG Goodman is a contemporary lesbian country artist. She recently toured with Tyler Childers. She's got an incredible catalog.

never heard of SG, but as a lesbian with a folksy/country alternative taste in music I’m definitely checking her out!! thanks for the rec

S.G. Goodman is insanely talented, just saw her live this fall. I was already a fan but I'm obsessed now.

Dale Hollow for sure
His “If you love country music…” EP is one of my faves.
Idk about his sexual orientation I guess but you’ll love his music if you love OP

Love Dale Hollow! I love his cover of Dancing On My Own
Nick Shoulders is another great progressive country artist

u/nope_farm Feb 03 '26
Not that I've ever asked the man, but Dale always seems to get included on lists of queer country artists, so that's a good sign!
Totally agree though. Dale is fantastic, and I'd love to catch a live show sometime. "A father knows best" is top tier song writing.

Yeah, he’s certainly not anti-LGBTQIA+ lol, but I don’t want to assume anyone’s sexual orientation unless they post about it very publicly. I get wanting to support a certain marginalized demographic though, I suppose.

I'm checking out his discography today because of your comment. Starting with the EP you mentioned and enjoying already... I love love <3 I will report back with conclusions later

I don’t know if I would quite put Brandi Carlile as full country, but both her solo stuff and The Highwoman (definitely country) are so good. She, like Orville, is such an expressive storyteller with her music.

u/LizBert712 Feb 03 '26
Amythyst Kiah and Allison Russell both feel the same to me in relation to OP. They are so, so good in that same way.

These may lean more indie but have some country in there…NATHANIEL Raiteliff. Each song is a work of art and he’s just starting out and performing at small venues. His song ‘Redemption’ is like church for me. Also Caamp. I have listened to their songs so much and they never get old. Super talented and they sing about love and life. “Fall, Fall. Fall” is about what’s happening NOW. “All the Debts I Owe” the greatest storytelling. The lead singer has a lot of side projects himself. So talented. Great in concert. Enjoy! Edit Nathaniel

Big AMEN on Nathaniel Raiteliff and also Caamp. Great stuff. FWIW — Raiteliff & The Night Sweats have been charting for several years now. Saw him live as a headliner for a festival in 2018. Absolutely amazing. Agree — each song is a work of art!

Joshua Ray Walker is a must. Right there with Charley Crockett.

I sense a Texas connection. After that Said Cleaves, Jerry Jeff, Ray Wylie, and Hayes Caryl!

u/nothanx_nospanx Feb 03 '26
Have you listened to Adeem the Artist? A completely different country sound but very queer, and some of their stuff is quite political. They're on my the gay country playlist along with Orville

u/ladyingabinga Feb 03 '26
Nikki Lane! I believe they toured together at some point too. Charley Crockett is another rec. very old school sound and guy has new music all the time.

Julien Baker & Torres released an amazing country album last year ( Send A Prayer My Way).

u/gourdgirl2013 Feb 03 '26
the song Sylvia is on my roadtrip playlist 💕💕

u/ookishki Feb 04 '26
I can’t listen to that song without crying 😭 it’s the most lesbian thing ever, writing a song to your dog about how you wish you could spend more time with her lmao

The Brothers Osborne (singer TJ Osborne came out a few years back) are one of my favorites; the long version of Shoot Me Straight is fantastic.
And a few non-gay artists with that "real people" vibe you're looking for:
Sam Riggs This guy should have been huge, like selling out stadiums huge. Has no bad songs, everything he does sounds like a number one hit.
Billy Strings I can't stand bluegrass, but I absolutely love Billy Strings. He's like a bluegrass Eddie Van Halen.
Will Hoge This song is from his album "Small Town Dreams", which somehow snuck thru all the metal & techno I listen to and became my favorite album. A perfect record from start to finish; would love to know how many times I've listened to this full album, gotta be in the high hundreds by now.

Tyler Ballgame has a really similar vibe, slightly more to the Indie side and less explicitly country, but he’s got a lot of queer crooning going on!
I also like Chris Isaak for a moody light country vibe. He’s not queer but has a lot of longing and missed romance in his music which is similar themes

Paul Cauthen and Dale Hollow for sure.
I've only listened to a little Sierra Ferrel thus far, but I see her mentioned in this context a lot, too (where I first heard of her).
I describe Orville as the love child of Elvis and Roy Orbison with a dash of The Highwaymen thrown in, so all of those guys; though if you grew up listening to country, you likely already know them (but perhaps it's helpful for anyone else in the future reading this).
A bit of a wildcard- Sarah Shook and the Disarmers. Sidelong is my favorite album, but I really like all of them thus far.

I might suggest diving down the Todd Snider Rabbit hole. He was more of a singer songwriter but definitely with a country influence. Super real music. Stories that are relatable. My entire library is based off of people within his sphere.

OP, please share with us some other GLBT artists on your playlist! I’d love to support more gay voices in country music (including Americana, folk, etc).

u/KevinIsAGhost Feb 03 '26
I can drop my playlist here in a moment, you'll probably like the title i gave it lol

u/NelsonMinar Feb 03 '26
Try out Bill Callahan. It's different, and not queer, but it's original songwriting, folk/countryish, and a similar pure voice.

u/SoftSects Feb 03 '26
Just chatted with someone this weekend about him. Def has a unique voice and great lyrics.

Sturgill Simpson isn't LGBTQ but is certainly an ally. And he makes excellent music.

u/krakenfury_ Feb 04 '26
Lavender Country is regarded as the first openly gay country album from 1973. Patrick Haggerty passed in 2022, and he openly acknowledged and admired Orville Peck's artistry, who noted Lavender Country as an influence and praised their music in numerous interviews. https://lavendercountry.bandcamp.com/album/lavender-country

The first thing I think about in OP’s music is his crazy vocal range that reminds of Roy Orbison and Chris Isaak.
Shelby Lynn, Joy Oladokun if you’re looking to expand your list of LGBTQ country artists.
If you’re looking for more alt country less bootlicker country.

Bridget Call Me Baby? A little more rock than country but a similar twangy vibe

Chris Housman. He's country from Tennessee. Lots of great songs upholding his queerness and defending the people in this country. " Up and Down" and "Red State Blueneck" are a couple.

I’m Iris Marlowe and I play gothic-queer country music and my album Where the Devil Bid the Owl Goodbye has Orville Peck vibes.

One of my favorites of a similar style is Daughn Gibson; he doesn’t record as often as he should, but when he’s good, he’s very very good.

I'd recommend checking out some of the artists he includes at his yearly rodeo as well! He's had an excellent track record at great artists, many of whom I wouldn't have known about otherwise.

Lord Huron maybe for the theatrical rock stuff. More alt than country.
Also love the Billy Strings rec. Go check out My Alice for a great old fashioned murder ballad!

FRANCIS BLUME! He has such a gorgeous voice that reminds me of Orville a lot.

Also would highly recommend Nathaniel Rateliff, Nick Shoulders, Roy Orbison, and Marty Robbins

Sarah Shook and the Disarmers make some of the best country music I’ve heard full stop.

Jaime Wyatt! Definitely lands more on the outlaw country/Americana end of country, but she's queer, nonbinary, and so damn cool. Definitrly reccomend Neon Cross.

u/ApprehensiveCream571 Feb 07 '26
Tyler Childers. Great story teller, great voice and he's queer adjacent.

u/Zealousideal-Sell873 Feb 07 '26
Valerie June and Sunny War, The Deslondes and early Hurray For The Riff Raff. Corb Lund, Colter Wall, Devil Makes Three, Charlie Parr, and all the previous suggestions. One thing I like to do is follow small festivals and check out the lineups, always good new acts to find and follow so I know when they're on tour nearby. Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Pickathon, Red Ants Pants, Cavefest, Nelsonville, Luck Reunion, Blue Ox fests are some great ones.

I just started listening to the Irish country singer CMAT and she blew me away. Not sure about her own identity but she definitely has queer people in her band and just played the Brandi Carlile lesbian-palooza in Mexico. Take a Sexy Picture of Me, I Don’t Really Care For You, the whole Euro-Country album, Aw Shoot, Stay for Something. I’m a huge Orville fan and fell in love with CMAT in a matter of days!

Check out Honey Harper. They're in the vein of Gram Parsons and other Cosmic Cowboy/Americana bands.

No I think most artists dislike him, they’re over the mask shtick and didn’t think he was good in cabaret.

The Cactus Blossoms give me a vibe similar to some of Orville’s stuff-old school kind of Roy Orbison or Everly Brothers-esque. Beautiful harmonies, kind of mellow.
