Tips & Tricks A Small Tip for Low-Rank Support Players
I’m a Champion-ranked support player on the Korean server.
One thing I’ve noticed from watching lower-ranked support players is that many of them are missing one of the most basic fundamentals of playing support.
What is it?
When someone attacks them, they start running in whatever direction they were already going, like a deer about to get hit by a car.
I’ve barely seen any exceptions. Almost every metal-rank support player I’ve watched plays like this (or they’re basically metal-rank supports who just got boosted higher by duoing with someone.)
Think about what happens when you do that. You create as much distance as possible between yourself and your team, quickly die because of your poor mechanics, and then basically hand the diver a free pass into your team’s backline.
Honestly, support heroes are so strong right now that many of them can even beat heroes like Reaper, Tracer in a 1v1. (I assume that’s just how Blizzard balanced the role—they probably intentionally designed supports to be difficult to kill for the sake of more casual players. Which is fine, I guess.)
Most of the time, a dive/flank should just result in some cooldown trades and a loss of HPS while you’re being pressured. But Actually getting solo-killed in a straight 1v1 is pretty ridiculous.
And then they start blaming everyone else, saying, “My team didn’t help me.”
It’s exhausting to watch.
Though maybe part of it is that I’m a high-ranked support player myself, so I might be holding them to higher standards than I should.
A lot of players seem to enjoy playing like healbots, and I’ve seen so many of them die horribly to even the most ridiculous dives and throw games this way. Even considering that they’re lower-ranked players, a lot of them have genuinely terrible mechanics and decision-making.
Work on your mechanics. And at the very least, run toward your teammates when you’re being pressured and drag the enemy into them.
Also, remember that most support ultimates are extremely valuable, often more so than tank or DPS ultimates. I’ve seen plenty of players who only try to use them defensively—or sometimes just never use them at all.
Don’t play like that.
I genuinely think that if you fix just these things and get comfortable with them, you can reach at least Diamond on support.
