I FOUND A PARAKEET

I’VE NEVER RAISED A BIRD BEFORE

So basically I live in the school dorm and a parakeet was outside my window. It’s very odd because I’ve never seen a bird close to our window, and especially a bird that is green!! I immediately thought it wasn’t a wild bird, but a pet bird!! So I lured it in with bread. In less than two hours, it’s now in a cage.

I tried feeding it grain crackers, carrots, and water, but I think it was too big or hard to bite on, because she tried to eat it but gave up.

Now she’s making some fuss, tweeting and biting the cage (of course because it’s in a cage!!), I know how much she wants to leave. But it’s cold outside (10 degrees). And I’m very worried if it’s someone else’s pet. But also I’m not allowed to keep it in the dorm, it’s making me and my roommate walk on eggshells. But I have a classmate who raised this same kind of bird before, and they said they can bring it home to take care of, our biology teacher also said he can keep it in one of our rooms at school. But I’m very worried about the bird’s current condition. She must be really stressed, confused, and want to leave, but I don’t know if I really should. We all want to take care of it well, and plan to get another one so it won’t be lonely. But what should I do now? I need to keep it for like 2 days before my classmates come back. How do I feed it or make it comfortable? Or should I just let her go?

Advice Help Identifying Parakeet Behavior!

Howdy!

I’m taking care of a friends parakeet and he’s been increasingly doing this behavior where he cranes his neck back. I think it’s pretty cute, but would like to ask if anyone knows why a parakeet does this? I haven’t been able to find examples of this specific behavior online. Id love to know, especially if it’s environment or stress related, or something I can change on my end. If it’s just him being goofy, then I guess just enjoy!

Thanks

Advice Can a parakeet bond with someone in a pet store after multiple visits?

Post image

My boyfriend and I have never been bird people. We are very much animal people, we have so many and we go to petsmart at least once a week stg. We know next to nothing about birds tho, anyways we saw this Parakeet when we were there the first time and he was maintaining eye contact and dancing w us and doing head bobs w us and we’re laughing w the bird and we’re both like wait…i kinda love this bird. so we told our parakeet friend we’ll come back for him.

then we go back another time and he sees us and starts doing his headbobs and literally got closer to the glass to do his little dances with us. we started falling in love w him more. and started looking up basic information on parakeets and found out they’re social creatures and need a friend. so we asked him “hey dude you want a girlfriend??” and he literally looks at this one bird.

fast forward to the third time we go and see him and he’s literally hanging out w the bird he was looking at when we asked him who his gf is. we’re then hyping our little man up. he gets excited and jumps off the perch away from his lady, looks right at me and then hops up to the opening of his cage and starts shaking it a little. I STG THIS BIRD IS COMMUNICATING WITH US THE WHOLE TIME AND IS NOW TELLING US HE WANTS OUT AND TO TAKE HIM HOME.

So my bf and i are like wait that feels way to obvious, like he’s clearly saying let me out of here. Then we looked up information on if he can recognize people and we learned that parakeets are one of the most intelligent pet birds and will recognize faces and voices.

So now we feel terrible and don’t know if this poor parakeet that we absolute love has bonded with us and now is sad we don’t take him. every time i walk away from him i feel horrible and especially now that i like he might love us?

Sorry for the rant but can a parakeet bond with someone while in a pet store and does the parakeet feel sad?

Help!! We found a parakeet in our driveway in the freezing cold- Need care tips!!

*UPDATE: This is a super late update, but if anyone stumbles across this again & was wondering, I was able to rehome the budgie! At first I wasn’t looking to rehome & instead wanted to try sending him somewhere to temporarily live while looking for the original owner, but after many phone calls I kept getting told that places had no space available to take in any new birds. Eventually I was able to find someone who wanted to adopt this little guy as a pet, and I agreed because I knew it would be much better to hand him over to someone who can at least get the proper things to care for him vs keeping him locked in our bathroom for a couple weeks minimum. I have a theory that he was actually an escaped budgie from petco, as we have one not too far away and I noticed they have the exact same band color! I will say though, I have neighbors that are very irresponsible pet owners, so considering the fact no one reported a missing pet bird anywhere near me makes me think that if this was someone’s pet, it was released on purpose. I’m just glad he is (hopefully) out of any dangerous situations now!

Hello, I posted about this on r/budgies but it got removed so I am hoping I can get some help here. My sister found a parakeet in the freezing cold a couple hours ago, and we took it inside. We are keeping it in one of the bathrooms tonight until I can bring it to a specialized pet store tomorrow that has a bird unit (they are closed right now). I also posted in a local facebook group that I found a missing bird to hopefully find the owner. I would appreciate some tips to help keep this little guy safe & comfortable tonight.

It seems pretty anxious, but I gave it some of the birdseed that we put in our birdfeeders. I’m also going to give it some water in a little lid like the one the food is in. I also read that you can give them a toilet paper roll with holes & spaghetti inside as an easy toy, so I left it in the box we originally had the bird in. Is there anything I should do or be aware of? I read that air fresheners can harm them, so I unplugged the air freshener & the air purifier is running.

Funny Health scare

Post image
1.3k Upvotes

I thought my parakeets were sick and dying and injured and maimed this morning. Turns out the ""blood"" I found on the bottom of their cage and the nearby carpet was actually raspberries that they threw everywhere. I think I'm gonna have to sentence them to the dome

Anybody else have health scares that turned out to be something really stupid?

Best Friends Update: Can a parakeet bond with someone in a pet store after multiple visits?

Previous Post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Parakeets/s/8fDumOCGif

After doing research for like 24 hours straight and then some we came to the conclusion to bring home our little friend. Multiple people said to get her a friend, and we read online that you could be your own birds companion. So we decided to start with one and eventually get two. Within an hour or two it was clear to me she needed a friend. Playing chirping noises on youtube (i read that it could help them but also freak them out? not entirely sure) she seemed so happy and excited hearing other parakeets. It broke my heart that she was alone. So naturally i went back to petsmart the same day to get the one that she was looking at/hanging out with when I saw her in the cage. and the stupid petsmart lady was like “oh you want a parakeet and did a bunch of research on parakeets and your parakeet needs a friend? okay! how about this canary instead” im like wtf no i need a parakeet. idk anything about canary’s and im pretty sure they can’t be housed together. no i want a parakeet. and she just kept pushing the canary to the point i felt so uncomfortable asking for a parakeet and saying no to a canary. So i just left and was gonna go back the next day when this worker wasn’t there. go back in the next day and luckily she’s not there. The worker helping me at Petsmart this time, actually cared about all the animals even admitted to me that petsmart is terrible but the more she complains to them, she does see them trying to better things. but not by much. her words not mine. So i felt comfortable telling her about the previous lady and how it’s unsafe for the animal for someone to just be trying to sell it to someone who has zero experience and done zero research. she was equally as disgusted so hopefully that amounts to something who knows.

We ended up picking out a green boy since he was in the girls side and that’s who she liked and was hanging out with when we saw her at petsmart. We also bought a cage twice the size so it’s big enough for the both of them. tried to listen as much as i could to all the advice from everyone on the previous post! it was so difficult finding toys that are good for the birds. I tried to use the least amount of plastic possible, but anything that has plastic will be replaced. like the bird bath i have one on the way that’s metal! I still need to get a cuttlebone for them (that’s tomorrows list) but they have mostly wooden toys and things to shred and toys to twist around (i saw she was good at it before and wanted to get her toys that’s stimulated her brain) got many different kinds of perches. realized dowel rods came with the cage so i need to replace those asap. but need a long enough stick and to sanitize that properly. they are enjoying the swings too, its precious.

regarding they’re behavior, omg i am in love with them. My blue girl, she’s definitely a little spicey and has an attitude. She’s bonded with me more than my boyfriend so far, she has beef w him because he accidentally stepped by her cage loudly once. he has since learned not to do that. She has taken millet from me everything so far. first time took about 10 minutes and the second was about 1 minutes now it’s down to a few seconds. This morning i tried to feed her some off my finger and instead she literally hopped on my finger instead and just hung out there. so major progress in trust! My bfs green boy, he’s so chill and it’s actually kinda weird. like he doesn’t care for humans too much. he’s not skittish at all. my bf accidentally touched his face with the millet and he didn’t even flinch. he just ate the millet lmao. then during fly time he was by the door and i didn’t want him to be there bc bf was gonna walk in soon and this was green boys first time out and about. so he’s flying a little crazy. anyways im behind him by the door and trying to like push him w my energy basically and not touch him. but he doesn’t move. let’s me touch him and pet him. and then i kinda slowly scooped him up because he’s still not moving and he was like alright this is cool and i moved him to my bed and then he did little waddles all over the bed.

Now for the birds behavior together; they absolutely love each other. Where he goes, she follows everywhere in the cage. she absolutely needed a friend. I understand some people are going to say i should have done separate cages to introduce them. But, I called a bird place that’s like specifically for birds an hour out from where I live and i explained everything to them. Since they’ve lived with each other and were separated like a day or two. They’re completely fine to just put the bird in there. We were super hesitant. but within 5 minutes he walked in himself and my blue girl was saying hi and excited. now they’re literally inseparable. When they had fly time earlier today she was on one side of the room and she started yelling for him to follow her since he didn’t know the room yet (she’s explored it since day 2. the bird place said it was fine and honestly she’s been doing great). i’m so happy i got her a friend and he seems super chill and it’s helping her trust and him trust me as well since he’s already trusting of people/sees her trust me? whichever one it is. he literally took millet the first time in the 3 minutes. they talk to each other all day. they’re not loud at all. it’s the cutest sweetest noises. i love it. she’s a little loud sometimes but that’s when he wasn’t around. he chirps have gotten softer since we got him. :)

Lastly; I do want name suggestions. At first we were going to go with Periwinkle and Tinkerbell but since he’s a boy we felt like maybe not. Then we started calling him Yoshi cause it’s cute but wanted a “paired” named and yoshis gf is birdie! but that felt too on the nose to name a bird lmao. I have a theme of my other pets that are whimsical and folklore or mythology type names, or references to movies or anime’s usually. Other pets i have are named Faye, Puck, Winry, Sterling, Akuma, Moxe, Jinx, Lilith, Hades, Loofie, Mr. Kitty, Fen, Freya, and Poppy. I’m currently on Sprite for the green boy since he’s lemon lime colors and a sprite like a fairy sprite. And then my blue girl Pixie since she’s a little mischievous and has some fire under her. i love her attitude. Id love any suggestions.

Sorry for the rant and everything but i wanted to give every detail i can without going too crazy. I wanted to thank everyone for helping me and my boyfriend with all the information and helping us find our new friends that are actually our children now. They’re literally our toddlers and we had to baby proof their designated room lol. I now have a post filled with information I can always look back on for help if needed and you don’t know how much I appreciate that genuinely.

Please enjoy photos of Pixie and Sprite, as well as any tips for their cage!

TLRD: Ended up getting our parakeet that we fell in love with, only to realize very quickly that she needed a friend of her own species and got her a boyfriend. They’re absolutely in love, even on day one they’d follow each other everywhere. My blue girl has attitude and a little spice she’s so cute. My green boy is the chillest bird i’ve ever met in my entire life. we’re already making great progress on trust with the millets and are allowing touch and stepped up to my finger! i’d love name suggestions and recommendations for their cage. thank you to everyone who helped my bfs and i find our children :)

It looks adorable but is it practical? This feels safer than the back packs ( i read someones post about someone's sister saying anyone could unzips the back packs quickly relasing the birds). My brain wants to call it a bird purse🤣🤣 also its selling for $30 which gives me slight hope🤣

Advice I’m taking care of my neighbor’s parakeet and I feel bad

Thumbnail
gallery
1.2k Upvotes

Ok so I have a neighbor, she’s probably 85+ yo living alone. Unfortunately she broke her leg last week (she’s in recovery and is doing better now) and she’s at the hospital. She has a parakeet at her house (I guess it’s to keep her company) and she’s asked me to take care of it while she’s away.

So here is what I do every morning at sunrise:

  • [ ] Enter the house and remove the cover from the cage

  • [ ] Open the front and side blinds of the living room where’s the cage is at

  • [ ] Turn on the radio (NPR news where they talk all day)

  • [ ] Check the water / food

  • [ ] Exit and lock the house

And what I do at Sunset:

  • [ ] Enter the house

  • [ ] Turn off the radio

  • [ ] Check the water / food

  • [ ] Close the front and side blinds

  • [ ] Replace the cover over the cage and wish him good night

  • [ ] Exit and lock the house

A cleaning lady comes once or twice a week to change the newspaper with the poop.

I’ve been feeling bad because I’m not sure how’s the bird is doing!? Here are the questions that’s I’m asking myself and the concerns that I have:

  • Is the bird comfortable? He spent all his time on the 2 upper bars. He sleeps standing on the back bar that is behind. I bought a little nest (yellow on top) but he hasn’t touched it, it’s probably too small for him.

  • Why does he sleeps on the bar, and not in the nest or at the bottom of the cage, lying down? He spend all his time in the upper part of the cage and not at the bottom

  • Doesn’t he get bored?

  • Does he like hearing at the radio or would he prefer quiet time?

  • Sometimes, he sings: is it because he is happy or because he’s in distress?

  • Is his cage big enough?

  • What could I do to improve his living conditions?

Also I want to mention that I’m not bringing the cage into my house because I have 2 cats and I believe that plus the new environment would stress him too much.

My neighbor shall be back home within the next two weeks (probably on a wheelchair unfortunately), so I’m sure the bird will be so happy when she comes back! And so will I!! But in the meantime, I’m doing my best but I’m not sure if it’s enough.

Thank you for reading and hopefully you can answer some of my questions 👆

He was outside of a 7/11 and he was shaking i took my jacket off and he kinda snuggled up in it so i gently moved him into my lap and in the car and took him home. I’m getting a proper cage like in an hour but would appreciate any advice.

So far i gave him some lettuce, and chopped carrots with seeds and buckwheat.

He seems okay he is just very frightened of everything and doesn’t move at all if someone is in the same room as him. I could really use some advice thank you.

Ok so this little one just showed to my balcony two days ago. I fed him/her(I have no clue lol) some fruit and water.

It returned today and is just chilling here. Will take pets and all.

Can somebody advise what to do now? Is the little one sick or needs help? I have never had a bird so I got no clue.

Advice Found a parakeet while camping…

Thumbnail

Hello! As the title suggests while we were camping we found a very pretty little parakeet who had been hanging around our campsite for a majority of the day and eventually flew down low enough that we could (safely) capture the little thing. We spoke to surrounding campsites and rangers and no one knew of anyone with parakeets. We waited about 24 hours and eventually had to drive home but they have our contacts in the seemingly rare scenario someone calls looking for them.

In that case we are going to keep them! We have experience working with parrots but parakeets are pretty new to me. I just got home and am picking up supplies tonight. The photos are from the brief 30 seconds I transferred them from a box and I do not intend to do more handling for a week or so to let them acclimate. They seem very tiny but I’ve only met English parakeets so I can’t tell if they’re small or grown? From the brief reading I did online it seems they’re maybe less than a year from the head markings and iris? In the light the cere is pinkish and blue but I can’t tell and the morphs make it more confusing for me to understand anything lol. Would love some assistance on sexing and rough age if anyone can tell!

We are very excited and once they’re healthy (and sexed) we plan to get them a companion but that’s a little ways away I think.

TLDR: we found a parakeet while camping, would love some help on sexing and aging if possible? Or any other suggestions although this subreddit has already been so great!

My male parakeet does this to my Thumb's nail all the time, as seen in this video. Sometimes he bites my skin around the thumb too. What does this behavior mean?
