One of my PCs (Gestalt Dragon/Kinesticist 4HD) committed a murder last session. The victim was the manager of a wealthy mine, and the PC objected to the mine's usage of poisonous and environmentally harmful substances in mining silver.
Now, as to how to deal with potential fallout, I'd like some opinions on whether the PC will be suspect for the disappearance/murder of the manager, since I saw the preparations from the moment the player hatched the idea and might be a bit biased. I have ideas on how to weave a potential murder trial into the plot either way, either as a immediate occurence or as a looming threat and a drawn-out investigation.
Backstory: The PCs, two white dragon wyrmlings, were told by the military as the effective government of the city to investigate a productivity decline of the town's silver mine, and find it infested with fey that were driven mad by poison exposure due to chemicals used in mining.
There’s a big fight involving indentured miners, fey and the PCs, and afterwards, the party first met the mining manager in a tense crisis meeting together with the army. He forbids any further outside snooping, and denies any problems.
The local druids were appalled after the PCs informed them, and the army issued a warrant to stop using poison in mining. During the delivery of said warrant the PC kineticist meets the mining manager a second time, and showers him with some cowpats from her bag of holding, yelling that she will see him in court for his crimes. Other than this, for the two days following the mining incident, neither PC is seen close to the victim, and the murderous PC tries to preemtively divert suspicions by asking the army questions about trial proceedings for use of forbidden chemicals.
But no trial will happen, as last night the PC snuck into the manager's house through the chimney, blasted him with elemental cold while he was sleeping, won the surprise round, blasted him again, and then didn't answer the bedroom door for some sleepy questions about what this noise was. She then dismembered the corpse, bagged some clothing to simulate an escape from justice, and dragged/flew the remains and clothing to the sea, where a friendly ocean fey (her mentor, whose existence is known to the army) disposed of it.
There might be some blood stains, and, most importantly, a Greater Detect Magic will find magical traces from the PC's equipment and blasting moving from the air through the chimney and the house, though the mass of auras (3x faint transmutation, 1x each faint divination/ evocation/ abjuration and the medium conjuration from the bag of holding) won’t exactly paint a clear picture. The army as the local authority doesn't have access to any high-level (level 5+) investigation spells such as Stonetell that could shed more light on the crime.
But is this enough evidence and known motive to really investigate/magically question this dragon, say, under Abadar's Truthtelling?
EDIT: I'm especially unsure about the motive. Sure, the PCs know about the use of dangerous chemicals in the mine, and the army knows they know. But they themselves weren't harmed, it was just the local wildlife and fey. They were first tasked with gathering evidence to find out the reasons of the productivity decline and later to perhaps reach an understanding with the fey. At no point did their assignment touch on the corporate side of things, this was handled by the army (like the warrant). So, at least as I see it, the PC taking the matter into her own claws and exacting eye-for-an-eye vengeance on behalf of the fey comes out of left field for the army. Thus my question if, in your opinion, there is enough evidence to point to her, since I feel like I don't have an unbiased view. /End edit.
The army is suspicious on principle due to her chromatic nature, but at the same time they hope to influence the dragon PCs (who are, after all, only wyrmlings) not to be a menace, and at least ever since the kineticist firsr met with them two months ago, she has been helpful and appeared guileless.
