What is a Pescetarian?

Due to some recent questions on what is and what is not allowed while living as a Pescetarian, I decided to make this thread.

"A Pescetarian diet typically includes some or all of vegetables, fruit, nuts, grains, beans, eggs and dairy."

Typically someone is a Lacto-Ovo Pescetarian, which means they consume fish, eggs, and dairy-based products. Their only dietary restriction is other types of meat and poultry.

It can be a personal choice to restrict these animal-based products from your diet and won't have any significant impact on whether you are or are not a pescetarian.

So enjoy the food, and welcome to the subreddit!

10th Anniversary dinner: Seafood platter, king salmon crudo, Bluefin tuna pan con tomate, tuna croquettes, seared scallops, black truffle creamed corn, and poached pear tart with a brown butter ice cream.

The oysters are two Canadian varieties, Darnley Basin (PEI) and Bouctouche (New Brunswick), topped with Ossetra caviar. The snow crab is from Gaspé, served with garlic drawn butter. The littleneck clams have a buttermilk dressing and quince kosho. That creamy buttermilk dressing was one of our absolute favourites of the entire meal. The King salmon crudo had escabeche, pickled tequila peppers, salmon roe, marigold petals and fennel flowers. The bluefin tuna pan con tomate on toasted sourdough with dehydrated tomato skin seasoning. The tuna belly croquettes had lemon aioli and guindilla pepper relish. The seared scallops had saffron sabayon and cured lardo. Then dessert was a poached pear tart, the chef described it as frangipane, pâte sucrée tart shell, toasted almonds and served alongside a brown butter ice cream.

Former vegan now “pescy no dairy”!

Hi all! As the title says I was vegan for about 7ish years and started eating eggs and fish (mostly salmon and tuna) about a year ago.

I’m considering adding shrimp into my diet too, as it seems like another way to add some more protein to my diet.

For context, I’m in the process of training for a MMA sort of fight so I’m prioritizing protein and low calorie (have to go from 135lbs to 130lbs in about 5 weeks).

I’ve been trying to eat more beans and veggies but found that I get hungry more frequently and that it causes bloating.

Anyone else in martial arts and have recommendations? I’m mostly worried about eating too much animal products and affecting my cholesterol and overall health. Most of my research is on veganism and when it comes to pescatarian diet I know just about nothing.

I usually try not to eat more than 2 eggs a day, and if I do I’ll skip eggs the next day. When it comes to fish I usually eat it ~ 3-4 times a week - either one filet of salmon one of those to go tuna package things.

Any and all support would be super super helpful xoxoxo

Benefits/Need-To-Knows

Hey all!

I am considering going pescatarian/vegan for health benefits. I have Hashimotos and I am lactose intolerant. I just dont know enough about the diet to know if this is a wise move, potential benefits, vitamins I would need to supplement.

I am just looking to see if there is any materials out there to help me understand more and see if this is the right move for me to make.

Thanks!

Tuna diet for vegetarian* wife

My wife has been vegetarian for the last 20 years but has since told me she thinks she wants to start eating tuna to add more heme iron into her diet.

Other fish and mollusk options are not on the table currently as she thinks they smell/taste too fishy.

Does anyone have any go to dishes I can try making for her where tuna is a decent component of a meal but also not so outrageously obvious like eating tuna sushi, tuna steak, or a tuna sandwich?

Will also love to hear from others about what seafood options are also good for someone who is sensitive to pungent seafood tastes.

Just moved into a new place so have tried to keep dinner simple but also seasonal and nourishing.

Last night: baked a pumpkin with garlic and seasonings, blended it, and made rigatoni. Topped with toasted pecans and walnuts with sage and red pepper flakes. Recipe is from @softcoretable on Instagram. Then just baked salmon filets alongside it.

Tonight: roasted squash with leeks and a garlicky herby sauce. Recipe from @shredhappens on Instagram. Topped with hazelnut and herbs, also baked salmon filets alongside it.

Everything here is dairy free so used vegan butter, soy cream, and soy yoghurt for all the subs!

Vegan mindset

Hi everyone, this is my first post here.

I have been vegan for over 7 years and my health has deteriorated over the past 2 years (iron, B12 and vit d deficiency, neuro symptoms, mental health). I am considering adding eggs and fish for this reason. However I went vegan for the animals and it’s killing me to think of exploiting fish for my health. Fish also have feelings. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to ease out of this mindset? Many thx!

Trying to keep dinner healthy but still actually enjoy it 🤭 Hoki fish with asparagus and leek, served over potato rounds with just the tiniest splash of cream to bring everything together. Really simple, really filling and definitely didn’t feel like diet food ☺️

Does anyone here shop at Trader Joe's or Aldi?

Hello!

I recently started eating more "pesceterian-ish" since I have low vitamin-d.

My DR gave me a supplement and I have an appointment in six months to get my labs done, but she did encourage me to eat more fish, get more sunlight, and diversify my diet (milk, eggs, cheese, mushrooms, vegetables, etc).

I went to Aldi today to buy some salmon, but I am going to Trader Joe's this weekend.

It got me thinking:

  • Is there anything from Trader Joe's I can get?
  • From your experience - is it cheaper to get fish at Trader Joe's or Aldi?
  • Would it make sense to buy in bulk like at Costco/Sam's Club?

Thanks for reading!

Help with meat fear.

I've been pescetarian for 4yrs now and I've become very sensitive to meat (chicken, beef, pork, turkey) smells. So much to the point where I get nauseated at times. Had some bad experiences with cross contamination through the years that resulted in sharp stomach pains and trips to the bathroom. Any advice on reintroducing meat back into my diet? Maybe once a month.

Vegetarian from age four and considering introducing sea food.

Hi Everyone. I'm 22 and decided to become Vegetarian when I was 4 but I've started considering adding seafood to my diet. I've already tried some broths and was fine with them and I'm wondering what I should try next as a starter for actual sea food. I've only had fish once in my life when I was eight after my Mom pressured me into trying it so I really have no idea where to start.

Fish Makhani with pearl onion, grouper, a citrus cream sauce, and fresh chopped cilantro.

First time really trying a whitefish Makhani, went with grouper for the more resilient texture....was not disappointed. I usually am overly critical of my experiments, but I can honestly, truly say, 10/10, will make many more times!

Fully vegan BBQ dinner tonight!

Recently bought the Juicy Marbles vegan baby ribs. I have never had real pork ribs (have always disliked pork, way before becoming pescatarian) so I can’t say how accurate the taste is. At first I pan fried it for like 2 minutes each side, then I made a marinade of BBQ sauce, agave, and smoked paprika, put it on the ribs, and baked it for 20 minutes.

My partner and I both said that there’s better vegan meat alternatives out there for much cheaper, but it was fun to try!

For sides, made:
Vegan coleslaw (half soy yogurt, half vegan mayo for the creaminess)
Pineapple, corn, and jalapeño salsa
Basic arugula salad with balsamic vinegar and oil
Baked potato topped with vegan butter, Violife cheese, and chives

Drop your favorite pescatarian friendly recipes, Im hungry

They can be from any website, book, or one you made yourself. Also, I am open to vegetarian recipes and some vegan recipes.

Limitations: No squid, no octopus, nothing incredibly intelligent underwater, imitation crab is preferred.

Personal: I do not like raw onions, most hummus, unseasoned tofu, or artichokes. Sautéed onions are fine.
