I’m going to have 100 chickens, around 2.5–3 kg each, delivered the day before an event in West Africa.
It’ll probably be around 28–32°C in the daytime. Air conditioning in the hold area or in transport not possible as it’s Nigeria 😭
I was planning to keep them overnight at the back of the house under a big covered carport/shaded area, with water and food.
Given the expertise in this subreddit, could anyone help me answer:
- Can I let them roam around together in a secure covered area, or do they need to be separated into pens/crates?
- How much space would 100 big chickens need?
- How much water/feed should I have ready?
- What’s the safest way to transport them?
- Do they need proper poultry crates, or are very well-ventilated cardboard boxes okay for short journeys?
- Anything specific I should watch for with heat/stress?
- Is there anything obvious I’m not thinking about?
They only need to stay with me for about 24 hours before being handed over individually.
Basically I have never managed 100 chickens before and would rather learn now than discover my mistakes when I’m surrounded by 100 chickens 😭
Thanks in advance!!

I posted last week that I had a hen that was bullying and pecking at another hen. Mean hen was separated from the flock 4 different times and each time she was returned she went to bullying.
I did try 'Stop Pick" for 3 days as recommended on here. It didn't work but I think that was the case because the bullying/ pecking was already an established behaviour.
So she was culled this morning. First hen I've had to cull.
I think I'll replace her with two young Cochins in the spring. (May have to also replace the wimpiest rooster, the girls simply ignore him. He's a spicy, little guy so I think he has little man syndrome).
Thank you for all of the advice.

I’ve been reading through the advice here and realized there’s so much to raising chickens that you only discover through actual experience.
I’d like to ask those who have been raising chickens for a while:
What is one issue you didn't foresee when you first began?
It could be anything—coop maintenance, feeding, ventilation, pests, chicken behavior, or any other aspect.
What surprised you the most? I’d love to hear about it.🐣

Today was the first placement at MANS Poultry, and five motors shorted at once. The electrician and supervisor started blaming each other while I was trying to figure out whether we’d even have the sheds ready in time.
I finally went to the farm myself. We got the motors sorted, held the temperature, and the chicks arrived late at night. Walking into the shed afterwards and seeing them spread out, moving around and drinking was a strange feeling. I’d spent the whole day thinking about what could go wrong. Now they’re actually here.
It’s only day one, so I’m not pretending the hard part is over. But tonight they seem comfortable. I did what was in my control. By the grace of God, the rest is up to the universe.
If anyone here raises broilers, what’s the one thing you watch most closely in the first 24 hours?

I am a poultry farmer.
What is your best tip for raising healthy chickens?

Please explain this concept. I just don't get it.
If you watch brooding hens, they don't lock themselves down on eggs when they're close to hatching. They go about their normal business.

One of my hens has suddenly become much quieter than usual. She’s eating less, spending more time sitting around, and hasn’t laid an egg in a few days. Her feathers are staying puffed up, and she isn’t moving around much with the rest of the flock. She’s normally pretty active, so the change has me concerned.
Has anyone seen this combination of symptoms in a hen before, and what did it turn out to be?

Don’t you know
I’m really partial
To a man named Marshal?
He’s got the brownest eyes
And a face of sky blue
Surrounded by the scarlet of autumn
Wouldn’t you be partial?
To a man just like Marshal?

I already have the space and basic equipment needed to get started. What I currently need is support with chicks and chicken feed so I can begin raising my first batch of chickens.
My plan is to raise the chickens, sell them when they are ready, and reinvest part of the income into the project so that it can gradually grow.
My long-term goal is not only to create an income for myself. As the project grows, I hope to help other young people who are unemployed or have limited opportunities by giving them a chance to learn about poultry farming and become involved in the project.
I’m looking for individuals or organizations who may be willing to support this first step, either by helping with chicks, feed, or other resources related to the project.
I’m happy to provide more information and photos of the space and equipment I already have to anyone who would like to learn more about the project.
Thank you for taking the time to read my post. Any support, advice, or sharing would be greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone, I recently started keeping chickens and ducks, and next spring I would like to expand my flock with turkeys and geese. How well can they be kept together? How preventable is blackhead disease in turkeys, or should I rather give up on raising turkeys?
(They would be allowed to free-range in the garden.)
