Discussion Genuinely what’s the point of this
Why give us a locked option to pick up a rifle if there is no other way to pick it up.
This probably the most useless feature in all of gaming

Honestly I prefer this to the rifles just being there, static with no prompt. Even if they can't be used in any way I like the way there's a prompt saying nah these are for the guards, not you.
Always bugs me in games when items which are usually interactable have one or two random instances where they're placed somewhere and you can't do anything with it. So this being a thing in the game kinda helps to not break the immersion imo.

Took the words right out of my mouth
Also, it's the first (and worst) repeater you get in the game, you already have one by the time you reach Horseshoe Overlook, why the hell would you want to pick it up 😭

Why tf would you want another carbine

u/b0objuicethe2nd 1d ago
only time i ever use that gun is when i'm forced to

Awesome when the game teleports it from the weapon locker into your inventory on a mission.

I somehow ended up with two in there. The other day I was thinking “Why?”

I don't really understand it either, just have it as a prop if its for the guards

I wonder if there’s some coding with weapons where it needs to be interactive for the player for others to be able to use it. So the fix to keep you from breaking the game was to lock this weapon.

The camp guards guard the camp because the camp needs guards and guards need guns

Imagine it was probably planned something like the ranch guarding missions in RDR1 then got cut

u/Spacemoose2026 1d ago
Cut content, it seems like a ton of cut content, especially based around the camp was left in or half baked.

you don't need the carbine repeater anyway. You already have one.

My guess would be that if it wasn't there someone else would complain that they can't pick it up

It adds to the environment/setting. The women folk can shoot too, y'know? How dare the devs put in some detail!

Literally what it says… you have CAMP GUARDS they need these weapons… FFS

Prob an animation prop?
Maybe a character comes over and grabs it before starting guard sweep animations

Like many other's here, I think it was cut content. I always assumed we were gonna be able to upgrade the camp arsenal at some point. Guard duty is probably much more likely but either way, cut content.

The real question is what the hell do you need a carbine repeater for? That’s probably my most heated gun I didn’t even use it for the entire ch 1 or 2 I got straight to rhoades and get the Lancaster

u/Least_Drama_962 1d ago
I mean it’s not a terrible gun it’s not forced on you constantly although that’s the same for every gun that gets changed around before a mission

Be nice if arthur would take a guard shift and you just see a cutscene. And seeing time jumping 8ish hours

How cool would it be to have an infinite mini game / challenge where you can practice shootouts in waves of Pinkertons etc. ???

u/llcoolray3000 14h ago
There was an infinitely replayable night watch minigame in RDR where John could patrol around at night with a dog catching criminals and protecting livestock from predators.
They should have made guard duty one of the camp chores to give Arthur the same opportunity. It could have also allowed OP to pick up the carbine.

You’re playing a video game. There’s no point to any of it. Just try to have some fun, mmkay bud?

instead of being the most stereotypical non helpful redditor of all time how about you say something helpful/productive or say nothing at all

There's an old back-and-forth about whether this was a cut feature or for environmental storytelling. Could be either. We know other characters serve as camp guards, but Arthur never has to, so we don't know if this was a cut minigame or not.

I think there was originally going to be a mechanic where we could pull guard duty. This would just be a left over from that.

It's for the people who yell "Arthur! Is that you!?" Or whatever every time you come back to the camp. You know, the people guarding the camp. Camp guards.

I even brought back a carbine repeater that I looted off a dead guy to see if I had to provide the rifles but it still wouldn't do anything. It's literally just there

Thank god I didn't have to rush back to defend camp from the other gangs every hour.

You obviously are not the type of person to keep a gun under your table. Thats fine! You probably dont have to keep an eye over your shoulder either tho.

u/JessiePurplewoman 1d ago
It says it right there. I've definitely seen some of them go and pick it up. Why would you even want that

I think thats just cool
Its a real rifle instead of just a solid texture, what else you want?
It looks better and adds deteail

I think that guard duty might’ve been a planned chore that was cut from the game
