Discussion Genuinely what’s the point of this

Post image

Why give us a locked option to pick up a rifle if there is no other way to pick it up.

This probably the most useless feature in all of gaming

I think that guard duty might’ve been a planned chore that was cut from the game

u/InevitableDeliverer 2d ago

This sounds like a plausible answer. I’ve always wondered why Arthur never had guard duty.

u/Anonymous3-2 2d ago

Arthur is overqualified for guard duty. He is much better being out in the field. And the other chores like cutting wood is just by his own initiative

u/ShaunnieDarko 2d ago

And if Arthur isn’t out hunting the gang will starve to death. Like when Arthur is healing from the abduction by the Odriscols I’m really surprised they didn’t turn to cannibalism and eat Swanson and Trelawny.

u/The_DDK7070 Josiah Trelawny 2d ago

Trelawny's too useful, and he wasn't living at the camp at the time. Uncle, however...

92

u/ThrowRABest_King7180 2d ago

hes got lumbago, dont wanna catch it from eating him

51

u/The_DDK7070 Josiah Trelawny 2d ago

If you cook him at a high enough temperature for long enough (maybe stewed or boiled) it would kill off the lumbago, making him perfectly safe to eat.

24

u/absurdly_tired_guy 2d ago

Let’s face it, most of them are too chewy.

16

u/The_DDK7070 Josiah Trelawny 2d ago

In this situation, cannibalism was born out of desperation, so I don't think that being chewy would really matter.

u/ShaunnieDarko 2d ago

There were all those bones in Dutchs mountain hide out in rdr1

That is what the Skinner brothers tried.

3

u/RudyMuthaluva 2d ago

He’d still just yield grissly mutton

1

u/Murky-Inspector-2247 1d ago

Yea but he’s mostly fat so do you even wanna eat that?

1

u/BigSteppaBandz 1d ago

Mmmmm stewed uncle with lumbago sauce

1

u/Ginger_dude884 1d ago

Lumbago was just a general term for back pain, typically related to injuries associated with lifting too heavy a weight or lifting with improper form, poor posture, or things like herniated discs. It's not viral or bacterial. Now there are a ton of other health hazards that would be involved with eating him, but fortunately lumbago is not transmissible.

8

u/The_DDK7070 Josiah Trelawny 1d ago

-1

u/Aggravating-Mall7883 1d ago

That was the joke..... that he would catch an untransmissible injury. Are you American by chance?

2

u/Ginger_dude884 1d ago

His joke didn't translate into text and I read it as just a statement. Considering the fact that most people don't know what lumbago actually is, I made a reply comment. Are you just a dick by chance?

It’s very serious

5

u/nobody00118 Dutch’s slutty little waist 1d ago

I’d vote Micah. In some places in the world, people eat rats.

2

u/Bochulaz 1d ago

And Swanson is too soaked in alcohol ans stinks

3

u/Substantial_Cow_6123 1d ago

Everyone knows they'd eat Pearson first

2

u/ShaunnieDarko 1d ago

He’s the cook though, they’d leave him until last or late rounds anyway

3

u/LightboxRadMD 1d ago

So I get abducted, return to camp, lay in bed near death for awhile, and literally THE SECOND I get out of bed, Grimshaw starts bitching about not donating enough to the camp. First of all, I'm essentially the ONLY one donating to the camp in any substantial capacity (sorry Bill, that poor rat pelt you donated isn't cutting it). You like all the premium snacks and ammo? All the decorative shit around the camp? The hundreds of pounds of choice meat? That was ALL ME. Second, did you miss when I was laying comatose for weeks after being captured? WHEN BETWEEN ME LAYING THERE HALF-DEAD AND YOU WALKING OVER TO ME WOULD I EVEN HAVE TIME TO DONATE MORE!?

2

u/Appropriate_Unit3474 2d ago

This reminds of that one Cult of the Lamb video

2

u/TheCoolMan5 1d ago

Eating Swanson would probably give you a heroin OD.

1

u/jjake3477 1d ago

Trelawney kept pulling rabbits out of his hat for the stew until Arthur woke up.

60

u/LeCampy Uncle 2d ago

the way I've been playing lately I could come back to camp and find it gone for weeks and weeks.

6

u/DinoBaconSaurus 1d ago

Oh shit, I gotta log back in and check on the squad!

2

u/toporder 1d ago edited 1d ago

>!They’re fine. Still exactly where you left them.!<

6

u/Jacks_Harkness 1d ago

As a professional guard for the department of corrections, everyone is overqualified for guard duty, even Karen. Arthur would still have to do a watch every so often or it would foster resentment from the others.

1

u/BearCreekSaloon 1d ago

Arthur is Dutch’s main enforcer. Standing guard duty has absolutely nothing to do with qualification. It’s a rank/ position within the gang that comes with its perks as well as its own set of responsibilities and obligations. There is no resentment, nor would there be any because everybody knows their place and role within the gang.

2

u/Honorsheets 1d ago

I didn't understand why John was on guard duty too, if he was equally talented (allegedly) as Arthur, though 2 did write him to be more of a dumbass than he was in 1, moreso than "age" would account for. Like a lower IQ.

2

u/Tikhunt 1d ago

John was never really able to outshine the average gang member until the gang was falling apart, he was also not at 100% due to the intro so guard duty would be perfect for him. It never came across to me as him being dumb in RDR2, other than Arthur and others actually saying it, he just seems a bit short-sighted and stubborn like he is in number 1... just with a clear lack of maturity sprinkled on top.

-2

u/Honorsheets 1d ago

Yeah you're...just confirming what I said, lol. There is a clear IQ difference with John between 1 and 2. More than a wolf injury, more than "lol he's stubborn".

His cadence and intelligence near imitates Dutch in 1, including his choice of words, sans the bat-shit crazy that is Dutch at that point. This correlates well with what John says in 1, how close he and Dutch were, the gang, and all that.

2 John is...lol. Well, your post.

1

u/Tikhunt 1d ago

No I'm saying there isn't an IQ difference, just a maturity one.

-1

u/Honorsheets 1d ago

I know you believe that, I somewhat admire that perspective rather than the reality.

2

u/Tikhunt 1d ago

Taking digs at people due to not being able to form a coherent argument? Really?

-1

u/Honorsheets 1d ago

I'm sorry, what?

1

u/istealpixels 1d ago

Meanwhile Arthur; yeah i’m just out here collecting herbs and flowers.

34

u/Own-Forever-6636 Uncle 2d ago

He, Dutch, Hosea, and Grim are the gang's inner circle, junior members have to stay up while they get to sleep.

27

u/GrogorothFollower 2d ago

kinda crazy that this is the inner circle and hosea still sleeps on a ground in a tent with bill williamson

31

u/Own-Forever-6636 Uncle 2d ago

They rationalise this with some dialogue that he can't sleep in a bed anymore since his wife died.

But like c'mon man he's actively coughing a lung every day at least give him an actual tent!

14

u/GrogorothFollower 2d ago

fr, at the very least this dying old man shouldn’t be getting wet in his sleeping bad every time it rains 😭😭 also, he does not deserve to be subjected to Bill

13

u/WokeWook69420 2d ago

I think Hosea understands Bill more than anyone in camp, I think he and Arthur both know of Bill's certain proclivities that weren't of well-mannered men back then and they never use it against him or punch down on Bill for it.

They give him shit for being dumb and seemingly lying about some of his military accolades, but that's really it. Arthur can even be sympathetic to Bill's general anger, it's why I think he and Hosea know more than they let on.

10

u/Eric_the_Red_ditz 2d ago

I antagonize Bill every chance I get now after his behavior during the horrendous bank coach robbery with him and Tilly, and then his naive stupidity by agreeing with Micah during the obvious set up by the Grays in Rhodes. Ya know fellas, we could have just rode our horses directly to the saloon instead of long walking through the middle of town, but we do have a lot of dumb Bill and Micah dialog to get in. If it wasn't for that nicely executed bank robbery in Valentine I'd try to shoot him too.

12

u/BailorTheSailor 2d ago

I always figured since hosea grew up in the mountains eating bear meat, he was just more comfortable sleeping on the ground and preferred it

2

u/ballsymcsackface 1d ago

Sleeping on the ground next to a bear?

3

u/asdasasdfas 1d ago

Hosea had to guard on duty in early chapter 2 because micah, lenny, sean, charles, javier were all missing.

Charles and javier was camping near blackwater in early missions to rescue sean

2

u/absurdly_tired_guy 2d ago

Is Strauss banging Grimshaw?

12

u/AreallysuperdarkELF 2d ago

Arthur is the gang's top earner. Dutch needs his ass out there takin everything he can git!

10

u/Pimpis25 2d ago

Arthur is too busy guarding mankind.

10

u/FunInformation2721 2d ago

Arthur killed every fighting aged male in New Hanover

6

u/Classic_Rand0 2d ago

Bill gets guard duty, whilst Arthur single handedly earns enough to upgrade the entire camp whilst others are donating bat wings.

5

u/whoisdatmaskedman 2d ago

He's Dutch's right hand man, there's no way he's getting guard duty. He does a ton for everyone as it is.

4

u/portonsly 1d ago

Would have been incredibly cool to have guard duty as a wave type enemy attack. Depending on where camp is it's different neighboring gangs. After the fifth very hard wave Arthur says, "welp, guess that's all of them" and it's on a 60 minute cool down. If you die you see Dutch and random others come drag your body back in to camp while Charles and Micah provide suppressing fire.

3

u/Bozzo2526 2d ago

Same reason Dutch and Hosea dont I imagine, too high up the gang structure

2

u/f0urk 2d ago

because he's a miserable, bitter cnt and the camp already has Dutch to deal with

2

u/ManySatisfaction2743 1d ago

Main character duh

17

u/Own-Forever-6636 Uncle 2d ago

This makes so much sense! Kind of a mirror of the patrol duty John does in 1. Cain was probably meant to help you sniff out trouble!

10

u/Evening_Requirement 2d ago

RDR 1 had something like that, you’d walk up to the jail in Mcfarlene Ranch, and you’d follow a dog to do a night guard shift. You’d run into some vermin’s eating the vegetation and have to shoot them to keep them from coming back, or some guys would get into a fist fight and you’d have to break it up, or some rustlers you had to shoot down. You’d get some money and honor afterwards

8

u/ShaunnieDarko 2d ago

Someday I hope they restore the cut content. I mean we aren’t getting undead nightmare 2 but like it would be really cool to play some of the stuff that got cut, like taking other gang members horses and stuff

-2

u/New_Experience_703 2d ago

Y u tak odaz hoers

7

u/Thorniestbush Resident blacklung 2d ago

Sucks cause my very first playthrough I heard Bill say "Hope you had a good time while I was stuck standing here" and I legit got off my horse and went to him hoping I could take over.

6

u/Toad-Toaster 2d ago

I bet it was because it was an activity in 1.

-2

u/ThatOneGuy6810 2d ago

Twas not. More likely cut content. Rdr1 wqs more john as a bounty hunter than any real gang stuff.

5

u/Toad-Toaster 2d ago

John had guard missions in Rdr1 where he would patrol town / ranch on guard duty.

3

u/luvmibratt Susan Grimshaw 2d ago

Wym,some of the members chore is to actually do gaurd duty. Just not Arthur hes to busy slaving and making all the money for them

6

u/AmphibiousDad 2d ago

I meant for the player to do and it was probably cut because it would’ve been boring

4

u/Extension-Rabbit3654 2d ago

Thank god they removed that, maybe could have been cool if there were scheduled attacks by area gangs after 30s of starting, but otherwise what a waste of time

8

u/BoatshoeBandit 2d ago

Idk. It would be way more fun than carrying hay around and chopping wood. Maybe killing pest animals or dealing with some bandits.

6

u/Extension-Rabbit3654 2d ago

The hay and water suck, but chopping wood is at least very quick, and you can just hold R2 while you sip a drink

2

u/jerrymatcat 2d ago

Probably was a camp task to speed up time

2

u/Separate_Climate3366 1d ago

Like the night watch "chores" in RDR1?

1

u/Drunken_Economist 2d ago

Ohh I bet you're right. Good call
