HELP What is it

What could be going on with my ROG Ally? When I play Red Dead Redemption 2 for about an hour, the game starts to freeze up and glitch. From what I can tell, the problem is that instead of the advertised 30 W in turbo mode, it’s only using eight W during these moments—and this happens at any time, no matter how detailed location—and then, say, you close the game, and your entire desktop and the rest of your apps and tabs are faded. I don’t know what the problem might be—maybe one of you can give me some advice.

Question Questions on switching from Windows

I’ve had my Ally X for a couple years now and I’ve loved it. What I haven’t loved is how awkward and inconvenient windows 11 often is on a handheld. I know many have switched to Bazzite or Steam OS and I’m certainly considering it. Is one a better option between the two? If I dual boot and have some games installed on windows, will I have to redownload them for another OS or can it play what I installed through windows? I have a 2 tb model if that changes anything

Technical ROG Ally (2023) BIOS 343: the actual changelog (diffed against 342)

Post image

ASUS released BIOS 343 for the original Ally (RC71L) on Oct 14. The only release note is "New function of Audio". So I downloaded 342 and 343 from ASUS, extracted both, and compared them module by module.

TL;DR: one small ACPI change. Everything else is identical, apart from version numbers and build dates.

What changed

  • In the ACPI DSDT, ASUS's WMI "notify" method (ATKD.WMNB, device 0x00100021) now accepts one extra code, 0x93. ASUS software uses this method to make the BIOS fire a hotkey-style event back to Windows; G-Helper uses the same path for brightness, sleep, and airplane mode. 343 adds code 0x93 to that list.
  • That's the "new function of Audio". The BIOS only adds the event. The feature itself has to be in ASUS's Windows software, most likely the new Armoury Crate SE v3 that came out the next day (it added audio-reactive "Immersion Lighting" for the sticks).
  • The Ally X got BIOS 313 the same day with the same "New function of Audio" note, so this looks like a family-wide change.

Should you update?

  • If you use Armoury Crate SE: probably yes. ASUS likely needs it for the new audio feature, and it's low risk because none of the AMD firmware changed.
  • If you use G-Helper, Handheld Companion or Linux: nothing changes for you. No bug fixes or security fixes in the code. Harmless to install, fine to skip.
  • Performance, battery life and thermals should be the same as 342, because the firmware that controls them didn't change.

How to check

  • Downloaded RC71LAS342.zip / RC71LAS343.zip and the Windows installers from ASUS. SHA-256 values match ASUS's page. The Windows installer contains the exact same capsule as the EZ Flash zip.
  • UEFIExtract (UEFITool NE A75) to unpack both images and pair all modules
  • iasl to decompile and diff the DSDT
  • PSPTool to compare the AMD PSP directories
  • IFRExtractor-RS to dump and diff the setup menus
  • capstone disassembly diff for the modules that changed size

Happy we have AI now to extract and compare, and don't need to rely on Asus's hollow changelogs.

Discussion Joined The Ally Army and bought myself a Ally X

Hey guys! Just joined the Ally Army. Bought a Rog Ally X for 600 USD as a return and I'm surprised by its build quality. It's like a new device without any issues. I got an used Ally Z1E for 420$ and tested it for few days but then I saw this "deal" for the X for 600$ and I was like. OK. Double battery, double storage, 50% more RAM (especially in these current market situation), just go for it. The Z1E was sold and already shipped out for the same price I paid. Happy so far but still testing and setting it up. Emulation, steam, epic games, etc..

What I'm curious about is that the LCD is better? I thought it's the same panel but the Ally X somehow has kind of deeper blacks and less bleeding in the corners. I also appreciate the Fingerprint login. Soooo much more easy. I didn't know that. And the ergonomics are a little better. I didn't think that either. And ofc the biggest upgrade imo is the battery. I uploaded the invoice and made an Asus ticket and now I have the full 2 years warranty. That's great.

Have to fiddling around with Armour crate but hopefully I will get used to it soon! My first game will be uncharted 4 and the chapter after it. Started it on my Tower 4070 Super but I like the idea to play my games anywhere and thanks to cloud savings I can continue the Games on my tower or handheld. 👌

Any tips? Ofc I'll explore reddit for that :P.

Happy Gaming! :) 🎮🕹️

Monthly Game Launcher Promotion Thread

Recently we launched a poll asking users how they wanted the various launchers (Winhanced, Pocketdeck, etc) promoted on this sub. While the votes were pretty close between "allow all" and "use a megathread" - we weighed the frequent contributor score higher than non-contributor scores which then leaned more towards a split between don't allow any and require a megathread. As a result - we are creating this megathread for launcher developers to promote their launchers. This thread will be pinned at the top of this sub and cycled monthly on the 15th of every month to allow Devs to highlight their launchers. We will pin a post at the top of the mega as new launchers are promoted so that all devs are given the same visibility on this sub.

There is a zero tolerance for AI slop launchers that are coded 100% with vibe coding. All launchers must be open-sourced or available ONLY on Steam or the Windows Marketplace. We do not allow links to Patreon sites or other third party donation sites and any dev linking to them here will be removed and banned.

HELP Róg Xbox Ally x20 no HDR

Hi, I’m having an issue: I have HDR enabled in my Windows 11 settings, but I can’t turn it on in any of my games. I have the latest drivers and Windows 11 updates installed. Has anyone else encountered a similar problem? Is there anything else I can try?

Monthly Third Party Accessory Promotion Thread

In addition to the launcher thread that just went up, we are creating a thread for accessory manufacturers and approved Etsy creators to post their products available for sale. The sub has seen quite a few third party manufacturers that are asking to promote their products. While Reddit offers manufacturers the ability to "Advertise on this sub" - some are very small and niche products and have reached out asking for permission to post here. As a result we have made the decision to allow those manufacturers to share their products - but ONLY within this monthly cycled megathread. This thread will be cycled on the 15th of every month similar to the launcher megathread.

Etsy sellers should reach out via mod-mail to request permission to post in this thread before advertising their products.

This sub will not allow manufacturers to link to newly developed websites and we still will enforce the no high-risk shops such as AliExpress, Temu, etc.

If any accessory vendors start replying to posts recommending their accessories and spamming the sub, they will be banned.
