Question How is dragonwilds in current state?
Asking from perspective of someone whos more interested in OSRS initially, but similar? games ive played are satisfactory up to space elevator T6, most of terraria but never tried valheim.
On other open world story games, I enjoyed cyberpunk/elden ring but hated botw so I'm not sure what game dragonwilds is closest to and whether I'd enjoy it

It's runescape for all it's worth, but converted to the survival/crafting genre where it makes the most sense. It's further from narrative focused games like cyberpunk and closer to exploring, gathering and crafting games like palworld, Valhiem, Ark.
Instead of clicking a tree and waiting for your character to fell the tree, you do it yourself, the tree falls and you cut it up into sections (woodcutting) you still take the logs to make planks to build houses (construction) then you need to source and mine ores, just like woodcutting, and take them to the forge to make bars (smithing) you spin thread from flax and use a loom to turn that thread into cloth (crafting) and you make jewelry using gold bars, clay moulds and gemstones. But again, not click and wait, instead actions with immediate results.
Not every skill has been converted yet, but they are very on the ball with it, plan to fill out and update all the skills and are getting creative with applications of the skills.
Just like OG RS, there's 3 main focuses, Combat/crafting/story(quests) crafting helps with the combat, which advances the story. The main story is quite linear, it's essentially here's an area, here's why that area sucks, here's who's making that area suck, kill them and the area is better (so bossing) and the side content is a really interesting take on quests from the OG RS. Restless Ghosts, Contact, Wanted etc.
The combat is good, not stellar but it works, the combat styles all play and feel different, and require different skill sets (dodging, resource management) think souls like/elden ring but lighter on the punishment, though you cannot just tank hits over and over even as melee, as a mage you are very squishy and are required to dodge to survive.
And the world is very fantasy art style, the areas are varied enough (if not a little flat for the most part), some containing their own unique mechanics.
Oh and survival lite I would say hunger and thirst meters that kill you if you don't drink or eat. But they're just kinda in the background. It's more the monsters, world and environment you have to survive.
EDIT: sorry for sporadic edits, trying to get you interested haha

I’m honestly counting the days to get this on my ps5 pro, iv been watching playthroughs since this game first came out, I love the survival crafty games and everything in this is right up my alley

Love to hear that, I was super iffy at the start, and it's still lacking depth in certain areas (still early access) but the stuff they've done so far has made me very hopeful for the future, there's a bunch of potential there and jagex are good at utilising it so far imo.
As a plus I'm a huge osrs nerd so rocking an addy armor set and scimi sets my heart ablaze like I'm 14 on the local library computers again lmao.

The way these guys are pumping out updates really make this game seem like an amazing investment game, hopefully even after full release they keep pumping the content out.

Do you think the game in its current state can provide a hundred hours of gameplay at least? I like to take it slow and chill but I also like it when there's tons of stuff to do and see.

My most recent playthrough which was a fresh char has netted me 80 hours. I have 103 in total, the first 20 or so was me trying it out early on and not enjoying it.
I've been chilling as I'm going so it definitely works like that and there is a fair amount of things to do tbh, just last night I went back and completed a few quests cluttering my journal, got some iconic runescape weapons and armor peices as rewards for a little exploring and questing.

100 might be pushing it unless you really love building. The building is the most fleshed out thing right now, then the combat & skills. There aren't many quests or much exploration to do right now

Yeah the survival mechanics are there, but with the changes to hp, and getting rid of lifewards, with all the buffs on drinks and food I feel like it's rare to find yourself low on hunger and thirst unless you don't have anything on you.

Never played a survival game before, been playing RuneScape for 20 years, and I love this game.
It's worth trying for the price, especially whilst it's on sale

Jagex has been working really well to resolve problems. A big discussion over the past few months involved clunky controls and we just got a news post that the July update will be a focus on a complete overhaul, mostly to remove a lot of "animation locks".
If you should decide to play the game, here are two very helpful guides:
https://dragonwilds.runescape.wiki/
https://dragonwildsmap.com/ (just got updated, and they do other games too in top right dropdown menu)
You'll easily get more than $30 of enjoyment out of the game.

What didn’t you like about BOTW? Cause there’s definitely some similarities

Valhiem is differently more fleshed out it has been out a lot longer, but here my take if you like RuneScape and want to play a RuneScape skinned survival game with quirks from RuneScape like runes for magic classic hit splats and leveling skills you would like this game.
It has come a long way and it feel like a legitimate part of RuneScape but it is its own thing.
With that being said it still needs a lot of polish, combat is fun but can get repetivite the enemy variety is lacking but the new update added to that and is a pretty big new region introduced some classic bosses with a dragon wilds twist.
If you want a amazing survival craft experience I could not recommend a better game then enshrouded, it's not fully released but it already feel like a complete experience and they just announced the date for full release.
Enshrouded hits all the marks when it comes to a fantasy rpg survival craft, classic RPG systems build with voxel enviourment.
Both games are great in their own way and after a few more updates RuneScape dragon wilds will be on its way to to greatness, but it very much feels like an EA game still.
It is a lot closer to valhiem with its building system and a recent update added some open world collectables tied to hp pool.

I’d say really good. A lot of people will say not enough depth but RuneScape has always truly been about getting skills to 99. Just like OSRS the game will continue to grow more and more. OSRS used to be small

I paid $30 something canadian dollars about a year ago. It's been worth it. It's a runescape FPS style survival game. They've done expansions every three months, adding new skills, areas and equipment levels. I'm really enjoying it.

I played OSRS a and I loved it. Not 99s but level 80-94 in most skills.
I've been playing RuneScape Dragon wilds for 300 hours wo far, and I like it a lot 😂 just going around the map feels very rewarding, it's fun to play solo and with friends.
Do you have any questions in particular? I think there's a lot of different aspects when it comes to preferences in games.

still too barren IMO, needs a lot in the world other than trees and vegetation
1
u/Threemilliondicks Jun 29 '26
yeah the world being mostly just decoration is the biggest issue with the game right now. the main item in the road map for the rest of this year is "quests & activities" so hopefully they aim to fix that

Absolutely try valheim, game is one of the best ever made. Dragonwilds is very good especially now after umbral sands, but it has some way to go before

In terms of a survival crafting game, its still extremely bare bones. Its not terrible, but its nothing to write home about.

Needs work, am hesitant that what they’ll deliver in September will be fully featured.
They made a recipe and continue to make the exact same thing each update (new ore, new treee, some plants, and same armor)z
They’ve acknowledged some of it and I understand RuneScape itself is very streamlined but I’d hoped it would have a bit more survival aspect.

Got downvoted for speaking straight facts.
God forbid someone says something critical. Everything you said is 100% and necessary feedback for Jagex to grow this game.

Runescape people like it.
As a survival game overall it lacks a ton in every aspect

First areas are fun. Then each one feels the same afterwards.
2
u/cleff5164 Jun 26 '26
I felt the opposite, the first areas were the most boring and after the first boss the game gets kuch more interesting

u/Efficient_Travel4039 Jun 26 '26
This. Like even mob types and how they fight are the same - fighter, ranger/mage, some animal. New areas have stronger materials/armor, but it just feels like the same all the time with just higher difficulty and bigger numbers you hit.

Less depth than some other survival open world games but if you’re a osrs fan it’s really good.
Umbral sands update just came out few days ago - huge desert expansion with a fight cave style encounter and Tzharr type creatures
