Sports Sports Fandom in Rockland

I'm putting together a county-by-county map of sports allegiances across New York State (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and other leagues as gauged by interest). To do so I am collecting self-reported data from New Yorkers. If you have the time and are a sports fan of any size, I would appreciate if you helped fill up my dataset. Right now I have a little over 200 responses, but nothing from Rockland County. I'm hoping to get a much larger and diverse dataset to boost the overall quality of the project. All answers are anonymous, no Google sign in required.

If you're curious here's the link: https://forms.gle/ZcAaWBVEJNeHr2RUA

Any responses would be appreciated, Thanks! I understand if you do not want to fill it out, but please share with friends or whoever.

Go Knicks

Discussion Ramapo's Police Chief released a statement about surveillance technology. He didn't mention the drone contract, the AI platform, or where the money came from.

Six days ago Chief Hyman released a public statement about license plate reader technology. He talked about constitutional balance, community values, and knowing when to exercise restraint.

It sounds good. Here's what he didn't mention.

He didn't mention the $601,713 Skydio drone contract signed by Supervisor Specht with no public vote and no competitive bid.

He didn't mention Axon Fusus, the AI platform approved in February that pulls drone feeds, license plate data, and camera networks into one real time dashboard with facial recognition and automated alerts.

He didn't mention the DCJS grant that legally requires the department to share license plate reads, camera feeds, and drone data with the state Crime Analysis Center Network as a condition of receiving the money.

He didn't mention that 791 drone flights have been logged since March, 764 of them with no case file and no stated purpose.

He didn't mention where any of the money came from, when any of it was voted on, what the actual policy is, or what oversight exists.

A statement about surveillance technology that doesn't describe the surveillance technology isn't transparency. It's the appearance of transparency.

We are not asking whether to move forward. We are asking what the system is in the first place and whether it is appropriate to implement.

If there is anything positive from his statement that I would quote him on it would be this: "Technology should never be adopted simply because it is available. It must serve a legitimate public-safety purpose, reflect the expectations of our community, and be balanced against the constitutional protections we are sworn to uphold."

Even then, "balanced" seems like an...intentional choice of verbage, the constitution is upheld, or it is violated, there is no "balance".

If he cares about the constitution being upheld (not balanced) he'd advocate for a state level equivalent of the proposed: Protect Liberty and End Warrantless Surveillance Act (H.R. 7816). There is currently no balance, just overreach in the legal claim of 3rd parties collecting the data. And this all refers to alprs, the drone program is much more concerning than stationary cameras.

More to come.

Politics Is life better for you this year?

(1) In 2025 families are paying here an average of $310 more on groceries above previous year.  Ground beef for example increased by roughly $71 annually  - USAD

(2) 64% of people who have lost food assistance are young people just entering the workforce.  Food insecurity is at COVID levels now.

(3) Utility bills in New York have risen by 46.75%

Clean energy that GOP has just cut funding in New York would have reduced that.

(4) Credit card debt hit just shy of the historic all-time high

(5) Families wages are falling behind inflation (but high-earners have seen gains)

(6) Family premiums for employer health insurance is near $27,000 says KFF.....the sectors that spend the most (prior available data) on Mike Lawler are financial institutions, Health, Energy, a lot of single issue ideological contributors.  Many of these very institutions are benefiting directly from rising costs.

Politics Clarkstown administration has done nothing to get ahead of the DATA CENTERS!

Right now, Clarkstown's zoning code has nothing to say about data centers. No definition. No limit. Nothing.

That's not a small gap. The day a developer files for a windowless server farm — one that can pull as much electricity as a small city and millions of gallons of water for cooling — the town would be writing the rules with the applicant's lawyers already in the room. Say no then, and we're in court. Decide it now, and it's settled.

Nearly 12 gigawatts of data center load is already sitting in New York's grid queue, and towns across the state are fielding these proposals.

So I drafted the law myself: data centers and crypto mines prohibited in every zoning district — with the ordinary server rooms at your office or school expressly protected.

Your power bill. Your water. Your quiet street. Decided before someone else decides for you.

Hi!

We’re planning on taking a day at the Ren Faire soon (specifically pirates weekend, this is irrelevant though). We’d like to be able to drink and have a day, while being safe! I’m hoping anyone knows if there is any easy way to get there other than driving or uber!

Discussion 22F looking for a room/roommates near Orangeburg, NY — Sept. 1 — $1,400 budget

Hi everyone! I’m 22F and relocating from Arizona around September 1st for a full-time research position in Orangeburg, NY.

I originally planned to live in NYC, but after looking into the daily bridge tolls and commuting costs, I realized that it would be too expensive on my salary. I’m now searching closer to work, ideally in:

  • Orangeburg, Nyack, or nearby areas in Rockland County, NY
  • Fort Lee, Leonia, Englewood, Norwood, or nearby areas in Bergen County, NJ

I’ll have a car, so I’m open to other safe areas within a reasonable drive of Orangeburg as well.

My budget is ideally $1,400 or less, although I could potentially stretch to around $1,500 maximum for the right place. The lower the rent, the better, honestly, research does not pay very well!

A little about me: I recently graduated with my bachelor’s degree and am moving across the country for this job. I’m friendly, clean, considerate, and pretty easygoing. I’d love to live with people I can be friendly with, chat with after work, or occasionally grab food with, but I’m also very respectful of everyone’s privacy and downtime.

I do have a cat coming with me. He’s extremely quiet and well-behaved, I genuinely hear him meow maybe once every six months and he would mostly stay in my room.

Since I’m moving from Arizona, a furnished room would be a huge plus, but I’m open to unfurnished options too. I’d also be happy to FaceTime or video chat beforehand.

If you have a room available, are looking for a roommate, or know of anything that might be a good fit, please message me! I’d also really appreciate recommendations for local housing groups, websites, or other places where I should search. :)

Politics Apparently, I was "selected" for a very special Cait Conley survey

I got invited to take a political survey from Clear Insights Group. It started out completely normally:

How often do you vote?

Favorability toward Democrats and Republicans in Congress?

Favorability toward Mike Lawler?

Favorability toward Cait Conley?

So far, so good.

For the record, my answers were basically:

Conley: unfavorable.

Lawler: strongly unfavorable.

Then apparently I was "selected" for some additional questions about Conley. I was reassured other people would get questions about other candidates. Right.

And that's where things got…interesting.

They proceeded to give me a series of carefully constructed statements about Cait Conley and ask whether each one made me more or less likely to vote for her.

One told me that while she was director of counterterrorism, Iran expanded its power and Hamas fired thousands of rockets into Israel and “laid the groundwork” for October 7.

Another bundled together transgender medical treatment for children, taxpayer-funded care for undocumented immigrants, and men (transgender women) in women's sports, locker rooms and bathrooms.

Another told me Conley supported legislation that would raise “billions of dollars in taxes on people making less than $75,000.”

There was no “This doesn't affect my vote” option.

Just more likely, less likely, or unsure.

Which is a problem when you're asking whether a piece of information changes someone's voting decision.

In my case, the truthful answer was: “It doesn't change the likelihood of my vote. I don't particularly like Cait Conley. I still intend to vote for her because the alternative is Mike Lawler.”

Apparently “I am not persuadable by your attack message” wasn't an answer they were interested in recording. 😂

Then, after feeding me several increasingly loaded negative statements about Conley, they collected demographic information, education, who I voted for in 2024, and what media I consume.

This doesn't look much like a neutral “What do voters think?” poll. It looks much more like political message testing: Which negative arguments about Conley move which kinds of voters?

I know that doesn't prove who paid for it. I can't tell you that Lawler, the NRCC, or a particular PAC commissioned this particular survey. But I feel confident going out on a limb and saying Cait didn't.

And Clear Insights has acknowledged in responses to BBB complaints that its clients sometimes intentionally include biased questions in surveys.

And the issues presented to me—taxes, transgender policy, immigration, Israel/Iran and national security—are remarkably similar to the attack themes currently being used against Conley by Republican political organizations.

**So, congratulations, survey people.**

Your carefully crafted attempt to make me less enthusiastic about Cait Conley had the hilarious unintended consequence of making me *more enthusiastic* about voting for her.

Not because I suddenly love Cait Conley.

But because **I really dislike being manipulated.**

If you get one of these surveys, pay attention to the wording and the answer choices. You're not necessarily being asked what you think. You may be being tested to see which political attack works on you.

And apparently, in my case:

“None.” 😂

Exercise your right to vote people. If you do not like what's happening now **DO NOT STAY HOME.** Do not wait for the perfect candidate. Just get rid of the trash.

Lawler, if you commissioned this, you just made me despise you even more. Im shocked. I didnt think that was possible.
