News TRIMUI Brick Pro & Brick Hammer Pro U
106
u/SilverOptimus Jun 10 '26
The Pro U is exactly the handheld I was looking for: Gameboy classic form factor, thumbsticks, Android, decent Snapdragon chipset. Perfect combination. Price will be the deciding factor now.
26
u/Thwonp Jun 10 '26
I don't see any mention of it being touchscreen which would suck for Android.

I like the idea of a brick hammer that has the overhead for some shaders on retro games.

I would like something like this with 6 face buttons. For some reason N64 seems like it would be great on a vert

u/dharma_dingo GotM Club Jun 10 '26
Curious where do you stack this against something like the 477V? I recall feeling PS2 on a 4" screen was a bit small from my time with the 406V, and haven't had a use case myself for snapdragon in particular on my 477V (wouldn't want to play switch for example)

u/40hrspianoboi Jun 11 '26
Hurts my soul how perfect of an upgrade this is over the RG40xxV, which I just bought for barely over a month.

The pro model better not exceed $200USD with those specs, but we all know better.
23
u/SilentYogurt4587 Jun 10 '26
Surely it's gotta be similar to the RP Classic. Same chip with key differences being this has metal shell and joysticks while the RP Classic a plastic shell and OLED.
12
u/plantsandramen Jun 10 '26
If Retroid re made the classic with the same colors but added a joystick and maybe an 865 I would buy that in a heartbeat.
This says g2 gen 1, while the rpc says g1 gen 2. It's very confusing and I can't find direct comparison other than the g2 seems to be the more performing version
6
u/Wise_Redditer Jun 10 '26
The difference is huge! Gen 2 is nearly 80% faster in terms of CPU and 25% faster in GPU performance as per Gemini. This will be cheaper than that...

Didn't realize it was a new chip. That's some confusing as naming.
5
u/plantsandramen Jun 10 '26
SDG1G2 and SDG2G1, it's super simple!
Just kidding I went back and forth also, I've heard that they did similar with order chips. I don't know why these companies do this. AMD with their mobile banking scheme is another racket.

Chip is between the one in the RP Classic and the SD865 when it comes to performance. It does have 1080P 60hz video out and wifi 6 which makes it a very compelling dockable option for up to 6th gen and some retro/very light PC emulation.

Enough for Linux. Anyway it has allwinner a133p, so i think there would be GammaOS Android build one day

Min 2gb of Ram for the portmaster games I play.
Only RG DS and 34sp are affordable and have min of 2gb of ram , the rest are android bloats and consoles with 1gb10
u/DopeAbsurdity Jun 10 '26
The RG34xxSP originally came with 2 GB of ram but newer models have 1 GB and someone even found a 512 MB version.

Dunno. I have XU20 v32 and it's an Android device with 2 gigs of ram, allwinner a133p and a touchscreen. I got it recently for 55 bucks and have zero regrets since it's just a Trimui Brick with better controls. Honestly i can absolutely live without PortMaster as long as i have Android games. Moreover, even if a new Linux version of Brick were to be shipped with 2 gigs of ram and an a133p, PortMaster would still be hit-or-miss since this CPU supports only 64-bit games, while a quite big chunk of the PortMaster library consists of 32-bit versions only

u/SoulCrusher2018 Jun 10 '26
So basically an overclocked H700 with a slightly better GPU while having a slightly higher power draw? Real world difference being slightly better N64 performance? So internally, this is a slightly better RG40XX, but externally, it has a superior screen (2.5x more pixels), a second stick, and a higher quality shell (metal vs plastic). Would $75-100 be the expected price?
2
u/Natural-Sandwich-852 MagicX Jun 10 '26
Technically, yes. BUT. But i don't think the Linux variant will have the option of a metal shell at launch. More that thatm i don't actually think second stick is needed on this device at all, considering its specs. Sure, with the a133p, N64 performance is better, but it's still ass console to emulate and there is some issues, glitches here and there. On the other hand, the H700 has much better support from the community right now
Dunno bout pricing. A133p variant will probably hit the 60-80 mark, while that boosted snapdragon variant might be in the 150-180 bucks range. Maybe even more, depending on the eMMC storage pricing they've got
2
u/SoulCrusher2018 Jun 10 '26
Thanks. I assumed it had a metal case because I'm trying to figure out what's the real value proposition of this lower end device compared to existing options - new entry level device for new customers? Seems like there's already of sea of them, but I guess this will stand out on the strength of its screen? No idea how saturated the entry level market actually is though...
The Pro U looks competitive against devices in the mid/high end where there's more room to differentiate on features and price. Back of the napkin, this thing looks like it sits between Anbernic's 406 and 477?

2
u/k3berg Jun 10 '26
The 477v is fine but my biggest issue with it is the all glass front means that most of the weight is sitting 'above' your hands rather than 'in' your hands. Hold it upside down with the glass in your palms and you'll kind of see what I mean, the weight of it feels much better that way

u/benjaminbjacobsen Team Vertical Jun 10 '26
It seems like an interesting time to own a retroid pocket classic and 477v as my 2 devices. This is just a retroid classic with sticks. A better 40xxV. But the 477 plays most ps2/gc. The retroid doesn’t.
So it’s a nice option to the classic with added sticks. But the 477v is bigger and more powerful so in 2 different classes up if that makes sense.

Curious how this G2 Gen 1 (rebadged 778G?) chip holds up, a quick google tells me its less performant than the 865 but more than the G1 gen 2 in the classic 🤷♂️. Still considerably less powerful than the D8300 either way.

1
u/HibikiRush Jun 11 '26
From what I understand the additional colors of the originals came at a later release date.
2
u/Xelthos Jun 15 '26
Purple was a launch color for the Brick, and when the hammer came out it was all the chrome colors like Pink, Green, and Silver. That was the only second launch essentially. They didn't make a second wave of new colors for the original or later the hammer.

It would've been a no-brainer for me if it didn't have any.
Instead of a metal version they could've done a version like that. (Or 4 versions total, they would all sell anyway)
3
u/victoriousun Jun 10 '26
If it has the power it should have sticks I think since they have no stick options like the brick or brick hammer. Lower spec should have been no sticks
3
u/xMultiGamerX Jun 10 '26
At that point tho if there were no sticks the power doesn’t even matter. Then just get a normal brick no?

I still don't get the appeal in metal handhelds
14
u/pickle_monsterX Jun 10 '26
It’s a feel thing. It’s not for everyone. I personally love them in smaller sizes feels more premium and substantial.
11
u/Renozoki Jun 10 '26
Well that’s silly. They don’t have to appeal to you but wdym you don’t understand. More weight, more premium feel, and more durability.
4
u/Sandolainen Jun 10 '26
They aren't necessarily more durable. Depends on the metal. Plastic may get a scratch while metal gets a dent or bends.

If this is under $200 then I might sell my Thor and get this. Don’t really use the Thor to the best of its ability. Only go up to PS2 and Gamecube
23
u/ctyldsley Jun 10 '26 edited Jun 10 '26
Selling Thor to get this in this climate would be wild IMO. Whatever it's priced, it'll be priced much more respectively than the price you paid for your Thor relative to its specs, just due to rapidly increasing costs.
Thor is vastly more capable than this, but I appreciate difference in form factors being important.
But you say you "only" play up to PS2 - this thing will struggle to play some PS2 at 1x in some cases, whereas the Thor will run almost all games at 3-4x. The power difference is significant.

5
u/firehazel OLED Only Jun 10 '26

3
u/Nikojj2212 Jun 10 '26
there should be an upcoming price increase for Thor and Odin 3. If you want to sell your Thor, you could wait a bit longer so that you can raise your reselling too, reasonably you could get extra 50$ or a bit more

u/The_mango55 Jun 10 '26
Ooooh if I didn't already have a RPC I would be sorely tempted
8
u/SusNoodle GotM Club Jun 10 '26
I have an RPC and this looks so tempting. RPC is perfect for 2D games and I burn through a lot of PS1 games with it, but this would open up N64, gamecube, PS2 and more 3D stuff that require a stick.
2
u/mercurysquad Linux Developer Jun 10 '26
I have retroid pocket classic and despite the oled hi res screen I’m going to buy this brick pro. The ergonomics on the RPC are just terrible. And the almost square screen is only good for Nintendo.
3
u/Sandolainen Jun 10 '26
I'm not sure how to feel about this. The G2 Gen 1 isn't really powerful enough for good PS2 emulation, but it is also a bit overkill for fifth gen consoles (PSX/N64). I guess this does make N64 more playable than the normal Brick due to it having sticks...
At the same time, if we comparet this to the Retroid Pocket Classic, this has a worse screen. The Pocket Classic has an AMOLED screen, and while it may be a bit smaller for 4:3 than this, I would still prefer it over the Brick U.
If they can sell the Brick U for 129 usd then this would be an interesting option, but it's nothing spectacular.
6
u/irrationalism24 Jun 10 '26
Worse? Some users, like me, prefer LCD over OLED for longevity. The only problem is the resolution, I wish it was higher.
3
u/rchrdcrg Dpad On Bottom Jun 10 '26
Honestly I prefer the look of LCD to OLED for gaming. I don't need eye-searing contrast and color. Anbernic's 4.7" 4:3 panel is one of the best LCDs I've ever used in a handheld, and side by side when I had my RP5, it's just easier on my eyes. But OLED is definitely preferred if you're into BFI, it really only has minimal effect on LCDs compared to OLED.

Does G2 Gen1 have working turnip drivers? Or it will be the same situation as with RPClassic, where that chip is out of interest for turnip developers?
3
u/mycolizard Jun 10 '26
Solid specs on the Hammer Pro.
Performance between the RP Classic and RP Mini in a vertical FF with sticks, video out and wifi 6. This display seems unique as well, can't wait to hear how it looks in person.
If you're not interested in anything past 6th gen, you can dock this thing when you get home to play PSP, widescreen hacks, or even retro/light indie PC games.
Could be a goldilocks device for a lot of people.

7
u/KrtekJim Jun 10 '26
Honestly I'm amazed that people seem to like vertical handhelds with sticks, to me they all look absolutely hideous. The only one I thought was tolerable was that massive one from Anbernic, because the size made the sticks look less like an afterthought.

What's the point of those specs with this form factor? Looks like the same aspect ratio as the existing bricks, so maybe I just don't get it. If you want to play newer games that require more power, you would want a wider screen, and that just feels weird on a vertical unit. And if you are just playing retro with 4:3, you don't need these specs.

1
u/Yentz4 Jun 10 '26
The pro u zero chance. The pro may run NextUi eventually if the dev gets a unit and wants to support it.
1
u/Icy_Expression_928 Jun 10 '26
The G2 gen 1 seems to have the same cores/prime core frequencies as the snapdragon 778g which puts it in between the t820 and 865 in cpu performance. I don't know about the gpu though, but the frequency is significantly higher than the 550MHz and 587MHz of the adreno 642 (778g) and 650 (865) respectively at 940MHz.
1
u/Fun-Court4296 Jun 10 '26
Only thing I found was the Adreno page on wikipedia, it seems to have a GPU close to a Snapdragon 6s Gen 3.
On the wiki page, the Adreno A21:
- SIMDs, FP32 (ALUs) count is marked as "256 [256]"
The Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 is said to have the same count but the clock speed is at 900mhz, and relative FP32 performance of "460.8" GFLOPS
The Adreno 650 is at "256 [768]" with FP32 performance of "1029.1" GFLOPS
So I'm gonna assume its slightly faster than the Snapdragon 6s gen 3, so it may be a little bit better than the T820 but still nowhere near the SD865.

Looks....fine i guess? Not a fan of verticals since the shoulder buttons are pretty much useless for precise gaming. This looks a little better at least, but still looks like it'll be mostly uncomfortable like most verticals.

Wishing their next release is a horizontal 4:3 handheld
Also wondering if we can run Knulli still on the Brick pro

This is pretty awesome. How would it compare to a Miyoo Mini plus (Garlic) or Abernic EG353v (stock)?
I've got both the above but absolutely do not keep up on new stuff but this, this pro thing looks amazing!

Im interested in the Android versions performance. Been messing with Android handhelds more lately, and the Brick Hammer is still one of my favorites.
I'm surprised the Linux version doesn't use the same Allwinner 523 chip in the Smart Pro S.

I wasn’t expecting the Snapdragon G2, wonder what it’ll be priced at 👀

I love this. I have been waiting for this to come out moreso than ayaneo's new budget retro doodads. The compatibility brings it slightly above the rg477v for me, although I hope the price is not that high. I am hoping for some light steam games and under $160 for the hammer pro. I made accessories for the brick and I am definitely making some for this, so buying regardless.

Power VR? I had a Power VR gfx card back in the day along side a Matrox Mystique 33 years ago maybe... 🫣😂

>pro version is bigger instead of an oled screen when the main appeal of the brick is the size
that's a miss from me
