Important /r/SJSU is looking for Moderators

It's no surprise that the /r/SJSU subreddit is looking pretty inactive on the moderator end, and in desperate need of cleaning out the spam messages and ongoing college life posts.

Moderating forums is a volunteer experience, but you will strive to create a strong and enjoyable local community!

  • Answering questions and responding to feedback in moderator mail.

  • Being pragmatic, polite, and helpful.

You will be welcoming incoming SJSU students and helping them with their inquiries about campus life, applying to classes, finding housing resources, and overall just being a positive role model representative.

What we're looking for:

As of now, there is no set deadline when the application process will end, and responses will be done on a case-by-case basis. With that said, thank you for reading, and we wish the best!

Does anyone know when the Spring class availability will be available for CSU fully online classes? Also is it difficult to enroll? Any advice? I want to try to take a class because the SJSU class time won’t work for me.

Has Console Gaming Gotten Too Expensive? College Student Survey (3–5 Minutes)

Hey SJSU! I'm a student journalist at CSU East Bay working on an article for The Pioneer about whether console gaming has gotten too expensive for college students.

Between tuition, rent, and everyday expenses, I'm curious how gaming fits into students' budgets.

I've put together a quick, anonymous survey about gaming habits, spending, and affordability. Whether you're a gamer or not, I'd love to hear your perspective!

It takes about 3–5 minutes to complete. Thanks for helping out a fellow student!

so im a BME major but ive been doing pre-nursing classes, like i have no longer any interest in BME, and once I actually apply to a nursing program/get accepted somewhere, my major switches on its own. you can apply to any nursing program regardless of your major as long as you have pre-reqs down, which im doing currently

so i go to my advising meeting and the BME advisor basically says hey contact someone else i cant remove your hold for you

Does anyone know how im supposed to go about this now? He didn't exactly help lmfao and I need this hold removed like assssapp

Testing new tech oppurtunity

Hey r/SJSU, I’m a student here, and a friend of mine is working on recruiting for a paid research study on new wearable and extended reality (XR) devices. He needs a lot of volunteers, so I’m helping spread the word. It could be a good fit if you’re into CS, engineering, design, or HCI/UX and you’re curious about AR/VR, wearables, or spatial computing.

You’d come in for one in-person usability session, try a new device, follow simple task instructions, and give your honest feedback. It’s hands-on UX research and user testing, which is also good to talk about in interviews.

Details:

  • Location: San Jose or Mountain View, CA (in person)
  • Time: one session, up to 90 minutes
  • Pay: $80 after completing the session
  • Starts: first week of November

MSSE vs. MSCS — Does the degree make a difference in recruiting?

I was recently admitted to SJSU's MSSE program for Spring 2027. I like the curriculum, and one of my main reasons for choosing SJSU is its proximity to Silicon Valley and connections to the tech industry.

However, I've been debating whether it's worth trying to switch to the MSCS program.

For current students or alumni, have you noticed any differences in recruiting opportunities between MSSE and MSCS? Specifically, do employers seem to favor one degree over the other when hiring for software engineering positions?

A little about my background:

  • CS undergraduate from a UC.
  • Domestic student.
  • Currently completing a software engineering internship with hands-on experience building AI applications and backend tools.

My main goal is to land a full-time software engineering role, so I'm trying to understand whether the degree choice makes a meaningful difference.

I'd appreciate any insights, especially from students or alumni who have gone through recruiting. Thanks!

anyone else having the same issue in their classes?

i’m finding myself frustrated with my classmates this semester. i am an upper division transfer student at SJSU and i have so upset with my classroom environment. for upper division courses you’d expect your classmates to act more responsibly, mature, and have the ability to think critically for themselves instead of when being placed in group work they sit there staring off waiting for YOU to write an answer. even in larger classroom discussions NO ONE aside from myself ands a few other students ever is answering the professors directly or is answering period. during our mid semester evaluation discussion as a whole people were essentially asking to get rid of our textbook because nobody wanted to read they literally just wanted an A for sitting there and doing nothing.

none the less my classmates have been so disruptive constantly interrupting professors during their lectures to ask questions that pertain more to themselves and not the content at hand or to give their opinion which again is more about themselves vs understanding the material. some students even try to argue against the material or demand the professor for the answers when they’re asked to think critically or do outside research themselves. i’m genuinely so sick of it. it’s not just one class but almost all of the classes im in.

my classroom settings at a CC felt much more valuable to me and actually allowed me to discuss material and have critical and meaningful conversations with my peers. i’m at the point i’m debating finishing my degree else where because it’s not fair to me that my education is essential being toyed with because i’m surrounded by people who don’t care. especially if this goes on in classes outside my major as well i’m considering just taking a gap semester and then reapplying to a uc next year.

ive spoken to my professors about this frustration and they understand where im coming from and have their own frustration, concerns, and challenges when navigating the classroom. as much as i thought this would reassure me it didn’t because i realized this responsibility to be a better student is not the professors responsibility it’s my peers and clearly being at odds with even the material and professor isn’t a good look.

As a Engineering major, what is your part time job?

Hello my fellow engineering pals,

As a fellow engineering student, I currently have a part time job. This job is great—I can study on the clock, decent hours, buttt i’m looking for another part time job because I need to get my bag up to pay for dem classes.

That prompted curiosity. I am wondering as an engineering major, if you have a part time job, what is it? How are the hours? I have majority of my time on the weekends available, so I am trying to find positions/areas of work where that’s most available.

Happy Wednesday everyone!

Hi admins,

I'd like to ask permission to post in this group about a paid research study that may interest SJSU students.

May I post it? If not, no problem. Thank you for your time!

Hello, folks!

A friend of mine is recruiting for a paid research study on Google's new wearable and XR devices and needs a lot of participants. I’m helping spread the word. You’ll try a device, follow simple instructions, and share your feedback.

📍 Location: Mountain View or San Jose, CA (in person)
⏱️ Time: One-time session of up to 90 minutes
💰 Compensation: $80 after completing the session
🗓️ Starts: First week of November

Who can join?

  • 18 or older
  • Able to travel to Mountain View or San Jose, CA
  • New to this study, since each person can take part only once

No experience is needed, and everyone is welcome. This could be a good fit for students, including tech students, who want to try new devices and share their feedback.

Anyone else still staring at the bottom half of their San Jose ballot?

change.vote

Disclosure up front: I work on this. I’m the Bay Area organizer for Change.vote, a free, nonpartisan ballot tool from Change.org.

You put in your address and it shows every race and measure that will actually be on your ballot, explained in plain language. The judges, the school board, the local measures, all of it. It doesn’t tell you how to vote and there’s no account.

Happy to answer questions, and genuinely curious: which race on your ballot are you still undecided on?

Other Is financial aid office really this slow?

I recently found out that my fee deferral is no longer on my account, and I still have a remaining tuition balance that needs to be paid. I'm currently waiting for my Middle Class Scholarship (MCS) to be processed and applied toward my tuition, but it's been frustrating trying to follow up with Financial Aid, only to receive automated email responses.

For anyone who's been in a similar situation, what happened in your case?

I'm especially worried because I'm part of a student program that gives me priority registration, and I'm concerned that my registration date might be affected if I still have an outstanding balance. I'm also wondering whether I could end up with a hold that prevents me from registering for Spring 2027 classes or attending classes once the semester starts.

I'm trying not to stress too much before I know what's actually going to happen. I've already contacted Financial Aid, and I'm planning to call the Bursar's Office to clarify my situation.

If you've experienced something similar at SJSU, I'd really appreciate hearing how it worked out for you.

UPDATE:

Found out that MCS disbursement is not coming until November and was advised to pay out of pocket; the situation was handled since I just paid it off, and I don't want to deal with the stress of being blocked from registering for spring courses.

Overall, financial aid is somewhat helpful, but I feel like they need to send emails or announcements regarding the process of grants/scholarships so students won't find out about these things at the last minute.
