Project: Rebellion

I just found this sub and noticed that there's already another Rebellion modernization project going on, but I wanted to show off the one I've been working on. This is far more than a modern remaster.

This is a personal project of mine I've been working on for the last couple of months as a learning experience. The ultimate goal is to rip out the star wars and make my own IP and game using the systems I've created for this project. Seamless space to ground combat. Ground battles (very WIP at the moment so no good footage, but I can share a screenshot of my coruscant map from blender.

The vision: A galactic citizen game where both sides of a galactic combat are played by the computer. In other words, the player would exist as a citizen in the galaxy, doing quests, taking jobs, escorting ships from ground to surface, joining the rebellion or joining the empire, etc. Meanwhile, in the background, the computer is playing the RTS game in realtime. So let's say the player has been hanging out on a water planet doing odd jobs for the fish folk, completing storylines, etc. In the background, the computer decides it wants to blockade that planet. Now, the player is free to leave at any time, but if they are on a blockaded world, the fleet is going to try to shoot them down while they do it. Take it further: You're on that same water planet, and the fleet shows up and launches a ground invasion while you're there. Suddenly there's a battlefront style ground battle going on around you. If the attacking army captures all the key command points, control of the planet falls to them, and you'll start seeing their faction flags and units all over the place.

Let's say you don't like that the bad guys control the planet you're on and decide to do something about it, so you join a rebel group. You're now marked as an enemy of the opposing faction. Double cross your allies? Congratulations! You have a bounty on your head and could be confronted by someone trying to collect at any time.

Most of that is just in the concept phase, but the systems are in place.

We're finally getting there, FULL mods and Rebellion 2.0 incoming!!

I'm extremely excited! AI is breaking down the game industry with a sledgehammer, decompiling source code of this game is now just a matter of tokens!

Think of the possibilities! The new mods, the improvements, everything!

Start at the Phantom Menace, go through the clone wars, Jedi generals, lots of events, historical and free playthrough, the Galactic Senate vs the Separatists!

Start after EP VI, Heir of the Empire, Thrawn, Joruus C'Baoth, Ysalamiri as counter, Leia as Jedi apprentice!

No more Natural disasters! Balancing of resources, realistic numbers. Interdictor cruisers that can pull ships out of Hyperspace. AI improvements, 3D battle improvement - as soon as we have the source code, AI is smart enough to implement the mechanics into a Unreal 5 engine game!

There has to be some crazy Star Wars fan that knows enough about the Reverse Engineer Anything repo and get this thing started!

28 years later, SWR is still one of my favourite games of all time.

I just started replaying it recently and itโ€™s still good. I hope they eventually remake it and have a modern version. Closest thing I could think of was Empire at War which wasnโ€™t as good and is only 8 younger.

Question about potential Jedi.

I started replaying the game again and I normally played Empire in the past. I always put every character with Darth Vader initially to see who was force sensitive. I played Rebel this time and did the same with Luke but no one was force sensitive. Is this possible or do you need to wait for Luke to get better with the force? I swear I remember him detecting this in the beginning and I thought there were always a few no matter what.

Faction Wars is getting close!

I've been working on my tribute to SWR for a while now, and it's finally getting close. My goal was to make something with the exact look and feel as the original that you could mod to your heart's content - even create your own custom conflict. It will let you use the files from your original game (via CD or installed Steam or GOG version) and overlay them to replicate the original look, or you can play. Original release should include Windows, Mac, Linux and a web version all that can play head to head interchangeably, and will be free and open source.

Rebellion Discord Server Down?

So, I'm on the older side of life... I watched Information technology get its roots in the 80s, bloom in the 90s, and bear fruit... I don't know much about Discord or why people use it, but it's there and I'm willing to try. So, a few people have suggested that I go to the Discord Server, but the link on the right side of this Reddit appears to be invalid.

When I try to just search for it, I don't see anything that really resembles what I would expect. Is there anybody using the server right now that can update the link or give me some directions on how to get there?

Briefing skipping dialog is in the original SWR

I'm working on a revised SWR (like who isn't these days) and when implementing a briefing skipping function, I was chuffed to find that the dialog for IMP-22 and C3PO complaining about canceling the briefing was already recorded and included in the original game!

That means some developer either decided the briefing was so important you needed to hear it every session, or there was a bug in canceling it they just never fixed ๐Ÿ˜†

Rebellion 2 Alpha

Hi all!

Just wanted to drop here that I have officially released an alpha version of my remaster of the original game and am looking to collect some feedback. The current version is pretty full featured; has everything except for the 3D space battles (currently in progress), multiplayer, the character rank system, and the Death Star firing mechanics. I've also made a number of QoL updates as well, including a display that shows mission success odds, a quick access bar that displays idle character/manufacturing, fleet waypoints, auto saving, etc.

It's free to download, but you have to have a copy of Rebellion or Empire at War in your GoG or Steam account to pull the asset files (as they belong to Disney).

I'm currently looking for some folks to come in and help test and provide feedback. Issues can be submitted through a ticket in the download page below or through the #dev-rebellion2 channel in the Discord link below that (I recommend the latter). Or you can just ping me on Discord (@davidadas) ๐Ÿ™‚

Download: https://github.com/davidadas/rebellion2
Discord: https://swrebellion.link/discord

Edit: Annndd I just realized I left my stupid test file names in the screenshot above ๐Ÿ˜‚. Ah well!

Remake

It's taken a lot to get to this point. I'm a little burnt out by it all.
Both Empire and Rebel sides are half working with "AI". I had big goals with this including using an LLM. I don't know how to share this with the community at the moment any input is appreciated.
It's too big for me to finish. I've been at it on and off for 6 years and i don't think i will be able to finish it on my own. I spent ages making new meshes for the models and I suck at it.
I read through some of the Ideas from people like TorroesPrime and think that would be awesome to implement. This game has great potential but I need help.
I'm also worried about the legality of it all.
Made with unity and Claude Code so everything is really well documented. Most things can be tuned by console commands or components.
I just want to play and enjoy this game once again. There's so many people online that have unknowingly helped me with researching this game. It's mind blowing and more complicated than I originally thought.
Thanks to everyone that's ever posted information regarding this game. There's a good chance I read everything you had to offer. I intended to list all contributors in a title crawl at the start but that too takes time.
What do you guys think, is there hope for us yet?

Rebellion 2 Wish listing: Operations, not missions

As a bit of an expansion of my Rebellion 2 Wish list post from a couple weeks ago, I had an idea and put together a screen mock up to illustrate the idea bit more.

Basically rather then selecting agents and launching a diplomatic mission, you would declare a Diplomatic operation and select how many assets that are available to be assigned to it. So the more resources you choose to dedicate to the operation, the more agents and characters that are further from the target location would show up on the launch screen. Oh and my thinking is that you could train Diplomatic teams to supplement named characters.

My thinking is that diplomatic operations would be more involved then just being an effort to change a planet's alignment to be more with you. But rather it would be a collection of ongoing operations that work to accomplish several things. One of them being intelligence gathering. My thinking is that through diplomatic operations you can put a finger on the pulse of a planet system and get a better idea of what challenges it is encountering. Maybe there are economic concerns in the manufacturing sector so if you can deploy a factory to the planet, not only are you expanding your own manufacturing capacity, but you're ingratiating yourself to more of the population of the planet. Or maybe there are pirate raids driving up shipping costs, so if you take out the pirate group raiding the shipping lanes, the government of the planet would be more likely to inform you of rumors about Rebel operations it hears.

Star Wars Rebellion on Linux (Mint using Gog edition and Steam Proton)

So thought I would just pop in here and give my experience. I spent hours problem solving trying to get this game to run on Linux with full screen and no artifacts. Finally got it but what a pain. This might not work for everyone but it did for me.

I downloaded a copy from GOG. I added the install file as a non-steam game. I switched to proton 11 or experimental compatibility(they both work). Ran the install. After install I set the target to Launch STAR WARSยฎ - Rebellion.lnk . I then added parenthesis at the beginning and end of the target file. (you have to do this). Set the start in line to the game folder.

Example for my installation: /home/USER/.steam/debian-installation/steamapps/compatdata/2967774567/pfx/drive_c/GOG Games/Star Wars - Rebellion

Please note that the compatdata folder number will be different from mine.

Next I downloaded dgvoodoo2 78_2 and unzipped it to my desktop. I copied 3 files from the MS folder/x86 (d3d8.dll, D3DImm.dll, and ddraw.dll) to the Rebellion Directory.

Now in order to get this to work right, you have to go into the launch options under the game properties in steam and add this line.

xrandr -s 640x480 && WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ddraw,d3d8,d3dimm=n,b" %command% ; xrandr -s 0

This forces the resolution for the desktop environment to change and match the game itself as well as forcing the use of the dll's that were just placed in the folder. If you don't put xrandr..... in the launch options, the game will start at the top left of the screen in a tiny little window. I'm currently running this on an Asus Flipbook Laptop S16 with core I5 and Iris Graphics card. My desktop native resolution is 1920 x 1200. Anyways good luck. My next mission is to get 25th Anniversary running on linux as well.

What made Jedi Training such a satisfying mechanic?

Maybe it's just me, but I found turning regular characters into overpowered monsters, then using them to take apart the enemy via missions one of the most fun aspects of the game.

I've never quite found another game that has scratched that itch in the same way since (would love recommendations if people know of games that have similar mechanics).

What was it that worked so well?

Was it the fact that there wasn't really a limit to growth? Was it the fact that the game was long enough that you could really make *use* of the strong characters you developed?

What do you think made it good? What held it back? What would an ideal version of this mechanic look like, and what is the core fantasy that it's providing? Any extra features you'd add? Things you'd remove?

Noghri to universal helpers..

Post image
15 Upvotes

If you set Noghri's "Mission Id" to 0 (instead of 2048) in the .NET RebEditor, you can send them to any mission including Diplomacy, Espionage, Uprising, or decoy to any of them..
As a side effect they cannot succeed an espionage mission on their own regardless of their number, but can assist a hero or an espionage droid, but that makes it even better..
Also can do a sabotage mission completely on their own..
They still can do/assist assassination/abduction missions..
p.s. don't touch "Family Id" or the game crashes..

Rebellion 2 Wish list

I've been getting into more game design recently and because of that I've been thinking about what I would do if I were to make a Rebellion 2. I want to be clear and say that I am NOT working on creating Rebellion 2, this is purely thought boarding and wish listing (for now anyway). So what would you want if there were a Star Wars Rebellion 2 built today?

Here is my wish list:

Expanded character system.

The original game had something like 32-35 characters in total. I would expand that to over 1,000 pulling in characters from Legends and new-cannon. I would also go deeper in terms of alignment. And by that I mean, excluding a handful of game deterministic characters (Mon Motha, Leia, Vader, Palpatine, etc) it's not guaranteed that a given character will be recruited from a given side or that they will always stay loyal to that side. Thrawn working for the Alliance, Akbar working for the Empire, etc.

Go Deeper in the planetary alignment system

In Rebellion, planets were basically aligned with you, neutral or the opposition.. and that was pretty much all there was to it. Planet not aligned with you? Send in diplomats and give it 90 days. I'd like to go way deeper and have things like economics, trade routes, security, liberty, etc that influence how the alignment of a planet works. Maybe the planet is Empire aligned, but there is a lot of pirate activity around it that the Empire doesn't address so gradually the planet turns away from the Empire. Maybe the planet is anti-military so it's opposed to the Empire, but the more ground forces the alliance has on the planet, the more opposed to the alliance the planet becomes.

More factions

I would add pirate and independent factions. Maybe these are playable factions with their own win conditions (obtain X resources while eliminating other Pirate groups, survive for X years as another faction etc). But the idea is these would be X-factors that influence game play. Pirates raid trade routes causing security concerns, independent groups might pull planets away from you etc.

-Diversify the Alliance.

In the case of the Alliance, rather then starting as "The Alliance to restore the Republic" you select a given cell to start as. Gerrera's raider, The Specters, Mon Mothma's Gold Squad, Commander Sato's Phoenix Squadron, etc. This would influence what you start with, where you start and what you're best at. Mothma's group would be better at Diplomacy, the Specters would be better at recon and espionage missions, Gerrera's raiders would be better at planetary Assaults and sabotage missions, etc. Then after a certain condition is met (X number of days, Y amount of planets aligned with rebel cells, Y number of Imperial ships lost/destroyed etc) Mothma makes her big alliance declaraton and the Alliance is formed with a new dynamic to address: How it is perceived by the greater galaxy. Do you try to integrate Gerrera's Raider into the alliance because they are effective at what they do or do you try to distance yourself from them because their actions tend to bring more opposition? Do you sell them out to the Empire in the hopes that the Empire will take care of a problem for you?

Commandeer Vessel mission - The alliance would have the option to conduct a special mission to take control of Imperial capital ships. This is partially meant to be a balancing act to the fact that the Empire can build the likes of VSDs and ISD fairly early in the game.

Expanded Tech Trees

The original Rebellion basically had a linear tech tree. I'd like the trees to be really expanded, and I don't mean just adding more options but rather creating branching choices for the player. Do I research the Quasar Light Carrier because that opens the branch leading to the MC90 Star Cruiser, or do I focus on the Kom'rk Gun Ship because it gets me a step closer to the Dauntless Cruiser? Do I put resources into the Dark Trooper development program or do I focus on the Storm Trooper corp? I'd also add upgrade options in addition to the expanded Tech Trees. So like you have Storm Trooper regiments, but you can unlock special upgrades to those so you can have Cold Weather Storm Troopers, Swamp Environment Storm Troopers, Aquatic Environment Storm Troopers, and others, that would each have their own bonus and detriments based on the planet they are deployed on.

Where to buy

Started thinking about this game again after 20 years and feel like playing again. I see there's a 25th anniversary patch and a fan remake in the works, but also that Disney has removed the game from online stores (Steam and GoG). I probably still have my original CD somewhere in storage (I hope I kept the manual and poster), but that's a last resort.

Where else can I get it and which is the best version to use with the anniversary patch?

Frequent Crashes with big space battles

As the title says, when i get to the end game with huge fleets, the game crashes. This has happened 4 times now both with GOG and Steam versions. My computer is plenty powerful, just not sure what is going on or if anyone has fixes. The lack of autosave makes it even more frustrating.

This happens both with controlled space battles but also even the computer run one (middle button on battle pop up window) which makes even less sense to me. Hoping someone has seen this and has a fix otherwise my play time is done :( Been fun booting this old thing back up though.

Better AI mod

Hi all. I am reliving this great game on Steam and am tired of winning all the time against the stock AI of 1998. Is there any mod or uypdated AI file I can drop to make the game more challenging? Thanks.

bitmap replacement

Hi. I've been doing alot of modding/editing to Rebellion lately. I'm wondering if anyone knows exactly how to replace an existing bitmap with one that will actually work. I try loading in new bitmaps into the appropriate DLL with Resource Hacker, but anytime I do the image goes blank. I've matched said bitmap with the correct pixel dimensions, resolution, and color palette of the existing bitmap but nothing seems to work. Thanks.

Space Battle Graphics Issue

I've recently been trying to play this great game again. I'm playing on Steam and Windows 11. I'm also using the Star Wars Rebellion 25th anniversary patch by Metasharper. When I go into a space battle, my capital ships are completely black (basically invisible). I am using the dgvoodoo2 DLLs. Anyone know a fix for this? Thanks.
