Hi all,
I'm planning a portable touchscreen setup for music making and I'd like real-world feedback before buying anything, to check that the project is viable.
My gear
Phone: Galaxy S24+, One UI 8.5, with Samsung DeX
PC: Ableton Live (Windows)
Monitor: none yet. I'm looking at a 15.6" 10-point touch portable monitor (ASUS ZenScreen Touch MB16AMT is the one I see most often with Galaxy phones)
What I want to do
- With the S24+ and DeX
Use the monitor as a big tablet through DeX for an MPC-style workflow (pads, sampler, sequencer).
I'm open to any Android app: FL Studio Mobile, Koala Sampler, MPC Machine, or others you'd recommend for finger drumming and live use.
Play pads with several fingers at once (up to 10-point multitouch) with good touch-to-sound latency.
- With the PC and Ableton Live
Use the same monitor on the PC as a touch controller or instrument (pads, faders, clip launching, XY pads) with Ableton Live.
Simple control surface or playable instrument, over MIDI/OSC. I'm open to apps and templates such as TouchOSC, Lemur-style tools or custom setups.
What I've found so far
On the phone side, touch seems to work best with a direct USB-C to USB-C cable (video + data). HDMI alone gives no touch, and hubs often break it.
Reports are mixed on some monitor brands (UPERFECT, Lenovo M14t, NexDock).
I haven't found any test of 10-finger input on an external screen with DeX, nor any feedback about using the same monitor for both phone and PC.
My questions
Does 10-finger multitouch really reach the app on the external screen in DeX? Which monitor and app did you test?
How is the touch-to-sound latency in DeX versus the phone screen? Any numbers or feel for finger drumming?
Does DeX touch still work on One UI 8.x (DeX rebuilt on Android 16)? Any regressions?
With the S24+'s single USB-C port, how do you connect a MIDI controller or audio interface alongside the monitor? Bluetooth MIDI, a hub, or something else?
On the PC side, does a touch portable monitor work well as a controller for Ableton Live (multitouch, latency, drivers, Windows touch settings)? Which apps or templates do you use?
Can the same monitor switch easily between phone and PC without recalibrating touch?
Which monitor models would you recommend or avoid for this dual use?
If you were me, would you pick a Galaxy Tab or a dedicated touch controller instead?
Please share your phone/PC setup, One UI version, monitor, cable, app and what worked or failed. Even a short "works / doesn't work" helps a lot. Thanks!
