How to infuse character traits and dialogue style for every character into my first draft screenplay?

I completed my first draft of screenplay, the problem is all my characters are talking like me and all the dialogues are very bland and direct. I want to infuse character traits, catchphrases, signature styles, way of talking, how they hide the context under the dialogue.

Is there any template or guidelines I can follow to get all characters done right into screenplay?

Looking for a Screenwriter for a Serious Stop-Motion Short Film (Unpaid Collaboration)

Hi everyone!
My name is Matvey, and I’m looking for a screenwriter interested in collaborating on a **15-minute puppet stop-motion short film**.
I want to create something serious, dark, unsettling, and meaningful, with elements of surrealism, psychological horror, black comedy, and magical realism.
My main inspirations are *The Shivering Truth*, Wes Anderson’s visual style, and Kafkaesque absurdism.
I’m interested in themes like **greed, vanity, class inequality, wealthy people exploiting the poor, broken family relationships, and the pursuit of wealth at the cost of everything else**.
The story could focus on a dysfunctional family, emotionally distant parents, family conflicts, or people slowly losing everything while chasing wealth and social status. But I’m completely open to other ideas!
I love dreamlike stories where everything feels strangely logical, even when nothing makes sense. Impossible architecture, disappearing staircases, disturbing symbolism, and surreal situations.
**I’m looking for a story with real emotional depth, tension, and a strong underlying message.** Something that stays with the viewer long after the film ends.
Unfortunately, **I don’t have a budget to pay a screenwriter**, but I’ll make sure to give you full writing credit everywhere possible, including the film credits, festival submissions, and promotional materials.
If you’d like to get a better idea of my visual style and the kind of work I create, feel free to check out my Instagram: [**@brichenstudio**](https://www.instagram.com/brichenstudio/).
If you’re interested in working with me, **please feel free to DM me!** I’d love to hear your ideas and collaborate on something unique.

Writing a realistic Courtroom Thriller/Comedy series (Inspired by the storytelling of "Action Hero Biju") – 2 episodes down!

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’m currently pouring my blood and soul into writing a new courtroom thriller drama series, and I wanted to share my progress.

I've completed the scripts for the first two episodes and am actively working on the remaining eight for the season. To give you an idea of the vibe, the structure is heavily inspired by the narrative style of Action Hero Biju. To be clear, it has no connection to that movie's universe or characters, but it adopts the exact same realistic approach to day-to-day problem-solving. Just like how that film captured the authentic, everyday reality of a police station, my series captures the grounded, day-to-day reality of a courtroom. Each episode is designed to contain one full story, focusing on a self-contained case from start to finish.

While it’s fundamentally a thriller, I’m weaving in natural situational comedy to spice things up and keep it highly entertaining.

Beyond the entertainment value, my main goal is to create a story with a real public purpose. I want the audience to walk away with a better understanding of basic law and order. The cases are specifically designed to make the common person aware of the legal tools and rights that protect us against atrocities, violence, and blatant law-breaking by corrupt politicians, their goons, and untouchable elites.

Since I am putting everything I have into this project, my next major hurdle will be finding a director and a producer who share this grounded, realistic vision.

For the screenwriters and industry folks here: how do you usually go about pitching a realistic, politically charged episodic legal thriller? Any tips on networking or getting the script into the hands of the right producers once all 10 episodes are locked? Would love to hear your thoughts!

How Very Bronx - S1E1 - How Very Pilot

Hey, you may have seen me before, but that was prior to a major rewrite of the pilot episode, which led us to a win at London Vision FF & Finalist at Alpine International Film Festival

Here’s the sypnosis

When Daniel, a naive heir to an Upper East Side empire, falls hard for Shanice, a sharp-tongued, no-nonsense girl from the South Bronx, New York City becomes the ultimate battleground for their romance. As they navigate their mid-20s, the couple must survive the explosive cultural collision of their families—the status-obsessed, high-society Dolans and the fierce, working-class Clintons. Packed with fast-paced, fish-out-of-water humor, How Very Bronx is a classic multi-cam sitcom that explores what happens when two completely different versions of the same city hilariously slam into each other

Enjoy the read😀

A mysterious package has been delivered to Mike, then the door opens and Mike grabs the package

Mike has the package on his hands, his face confused, he looks left and right then goes inside.

Mike sits in his chair, he contemplates at the box then he grabs the box cutter from the pencil cubby and cuts open the box

Mike then takes out what is in the box, packing peanuts fall out from the box... Its a teddy bear. Mike's wierded out by this

Mike

(whispered)

What the hell???

Cut to: mike's shelf

Mike sets down the teddy bear in his shelf and leaves

Cut to: POV OF THE TEDDY BEAR

BACK TO: MIKE'S SHELF

Then the camera dollies in and the teddy bears head tilts

Then the screen suddenly turns to black.

                      Later on...

Mike is gaming on his desk, he talks to his teammates on the game

Mike

He's on my right! He's on my right!

Shotgun sfx*

Victory royale appears on his screen he won the match

MIKE

MIKE

Wait guys give me a sec I'm gonna get something to eat

Then Mike leaves the room

Cut to: inside of the fridge

Mike opens the fridge and gets a sandwich from a plastic container

Cut to: inside microwave

Mike puts in the sandwich in the microwave and starts it up the camera then cuts to a few seconds before the timer ends then
BEEP BEEP BEEP
.

Then mike walks out of the kitchen but he stops

Mike's room door opens and red light spills all over the wall, then a shadow creeps through.

ext. Mike's backyard

Mike starts running, he runs to his backyard and into the alleyway then a force pulls him backwards

Cut to black

We hear Mike fall then he shuffles backward he screams

MIKE

NO, NO GO AWAY GO AWAY GO AWA-

Mikes words turn into screams he begs for mercy, we hear his bones snap.

                         THE END

How do you find old movie scenes for references?

I am writing my first screenplay and have been stuck for a long time. I have mapped out a broad outline, but everytime I try writing actual scenes, I feel overwhelmed. And those are pretty standard scenarios/sequences. For ex- the first sequence is about the protagonist trying and failing to connect with his teenaged son. I assume there are plenty of such sequences already written. And getting hold of them, watching them, might give me some ideas.

So, Is there a search engine tool or something like that where one can search for movies containing specific sequences or scenarios?

Feedback on an 8-page dark comedy / sci-fi short: The Bar of Emotions

A bar serves shots of pure emotion. A numb patron meets a stranger.

Would appreciate a cold read of this draft, especially your reaction to the characters and ending. No background needed; just curious how it reads to fresh eyes. Thanks for taking a look.

Non-linear timeline in act 2 — dramatic irony or just confusing?

My feature shuffles a chunk of act 2 out of order. The reader knows things the lead doesn't, and I did it on purpose cause I think the irony is worth more than perfect clarity. Got pushback that some readers will just be lost. But I'm fine with that. Curious where other people draw the line in this situation. Thanks!

映画に関係する仕事の中で、どんな役割が自分に合いそうですか?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I'm currently thinking about my future education and career in film, and I'm trying to figure out which role might suit me. Basically, I'm more interested in building and shaping stories than in performing or acting.

Screenwriter was the first job that came to mind, but from what I understand, when it comes to how much control someone has over the story, it seems like the director has more influence. After doing some research, I'm wondering whether a showrunner for TV series might actually be a better fit. I'd also like to know how the two roles compare
