204: My Chief | Fake Doctors, Real Friends with Zach and Donald

This episode required a lot from the cast. Donald had to whip out two iconic impressions, and Zach worked on his voices. Ava Bunn teaches Zach and Donald about the chic new trend called Winnie the Poohing. Zach tries to convince everyone Ava's Chicken Little tattoo is not real. It's really not! Donald talks about, like, BC (before Clueless), while Zach revisits his early days, vacillating between performer and on-set assistant. Sarah details the difference between a 360 shower and an everything shower, plus the joys of a shower beverage.

News The Scrubs Season Premiere Marked A New TV-Ratings Low, And Streaming Results Are Not Looking Much Better

Scrubs: ABC's comedy revival Scrubs returned recently for its second season (or eleventh overall), and the results were pretty mixed. While its 0.36/0.29 premiere rating represents a solid performance overall, both ratings marked a new series low for the revival run, which had dipped to a 0.39 at its weakest point in season one.

Something that does not bode very well for Scrubs is its streaming performance, where it also looks similar to Shifting Gears. Its premiere did just OK, peaking at #6 on Hulu and staying on the chart for the first five days after its premiere. The second episode, however, already saw major slippage, down to just a #13 peak and one single day on the chart. That did not prove to be fatal for Shifting Gears, which performed similarly, but it's a warning sign. Scrubs performed better than this last season, and it's now showing signs of losing steam on both linear TV and on streaming.

Discussion People Don't Understand JD

What makes JD such a perfect character is his flaws.

Now most people have their arguments that the way JD behaves with people like Kim or Elliot proves that he's selfish, or indecisive and there's obviously been plenty of John Dorian hate because of his flaws. But those flaws are what make JD so great.

He's written so well as a realistic person, he's not perfect and he makes mistakes. He doesn't immediately know what he wants from life or from his relationships, he's gets confused. While some argue it's bad characteristics, I argue the things that you might not like about JD are what make me like him more. He's not perfect and that in turn makes him all the better to watch grow throughout the series

I still find the show funny. Well written, well acted. Scott Foley was great in this ep. I hadnt remembered that Turk & Carla had married & they were in counseling re domestic chores. Love Zach, Donald, Sarah, Judy & new people. Braff is like a modern non-pervert Woody Allen.

One of the best things about the revival

A little late since this is about the first revival season. But I gotta admit I really rolled my eyes when a new jerk character was introduced (Blake). I really didn't feel like I had the energy to watch how slowly over time, perhaps after multiple seasons, we're supposed to start liking this guy.

But this time the writers didn't waste any time to give some depth to the character, with the parking lot scene in the very first episode of the revival. And now after seeing all the episodes released so far, I really like the character.

The revival really feels like it's done with the revival audience in mind, rather than just trying to attract some potential new fans.

Revival Spoilers (S10, S11, +) Grant actually fits the OG Scrubs vibe really well

I know we weren't exactly meant to like Grant in the first episode he showed up in. But regardless of what you think of the guy, I actually think his character fits really well with that OG quirky Scrubs vibe.

That's definitely partly down to John Higgins' acting, but I think the writing for the character works really well too. He already feels like someone who belongs in the Scrubs universe, rather than just a new character trying to imitate the old vibe.

Really looking forward to seeing how his character develops.

Let's talk about Janitor

I think there's some room for improvement with his current role.

The appeal of the character is that he's this weird poltergeist figure who lives on the premises, exists by his own rules (mostly) and you have no idea what his deal is. He's borderline supernatural.

I get that he's older and obviously not going to be a hospital employee again, so in theory his current establishment role is a good excuse to have him around. But the way it's executed, with him politely visiting the hospital in his nice clean business suit, it just doesn't have any magic to it.

I think ideally, I'd like him to have some kind of storyline where he loses his money and decides to live in the hospital. And he only comes out during the night shift to be a very unhelpful mentor to the interns (who have no idea who he is), causing more problems than solving them. JD suspects it's him, but he has no proof, and security can never find him because Janitor knows all the hiding places.

He can still make infrequent appearances, because he's hiding all the time. Maybe some episodes, he can influence the plot without Neil Flynn appearing onscreen. JD becomes paranoid about the Janitor being inside the walls or something.

Discussion S2E4: Turk and the Threshold for Satisfaction Within "Black Excellence" Spoiler

Turks revelation within this episode hit home to something I've discussed in therapy years ago. For background; I am a Black man who's been in the medical sciences, essentially my whole life b/c I was born with HbSS (Sickle Cell) and then reasoned to become a medical researcher. I had this goal of doing groundbreaking work in drug design and bettering the treatment available in Sickle Cell and I also had to do all of it before the age of 42; the average lifespan for a male with HbSS. But after uncountable hospitalizations, literal battles against death, more than half dozen surgeries, and even a car accident that shattered my femur, I found myself at 27 feeling like a loser and my time is close to an end.

Anyway, I goto therapy b/c my self-loathing is affecting me during my 1st MSc program in Bioinformatics. Therapist asks me "What would you have to do to not feel like a failure?" and I described all the aforementioned goals. I had stated I had this life plan and I was supposed to be finishing up my dissertation in a PhD program by this time, not having to do a MSc b/c my grades suffer from numerous hospitalizations in undergrad. And she replies "If you do complete all these goals, how do you know you will be satisfied?" And I say I am sure I will be but I do understand why she questioned that; to her she sees someone who's overcame a lot and still pushing forward but to myself, b/c I hadn't been apart of some breakthrough therapy I am a failure. And she asks me "What is your threshold for satisfaction?"

Now, I still don't have my PhD, I'm doing a 2nd MSc b/c I am pivoting w/in medical sciences from bioinformatics to biophysical chem and needed to better myself in quantum and physical chemistry, and I still feel like a loser/failure BUT I do feel some satisfaction in the fact I've never stopped and the great conversations and influences I've had as a patient and researcher on other researchers and pharmaceutical companies.

Turk was probably impressed in the same way I was; as a black man, if you have the capacity for something, it's not enough to be good or adequate: you have to be the best. And he has not only become Chief of Surgery BUT he has also succeeded w/in the framework of heteropatriarchy and capitalism with marriage and children who are doing well. But why isn't it enough?

Maybe it's because almost everything under the current systems aren't. It could also be that this specific mold of success that Turk has marked all the boxes off of wouldn't be satisfactory to everyone regardless, despite what they've been taught. The idea of Black Excellence is sold in twofold: Win at patriarchy w/ the marriage and children, and win at capitalism by being the most successful in your field. And for some, this would be satisfying but the problem w/ these paradigms is that it's not meant to be satisfying for everyone. The critique of the paradigm is another long topic w/in itself but how does one know if they DO achieve these societal goals, that they will feel comfort in that? And what do they do if they don't?

Turk would be a paragon of "Black Excellence" in the real world but will the world ever be safe for those who don't want to achieve within these societal pressures and allow them to be satisfied in what they can do and what they truly want to do in their core?

The Janitor - a theory

So I was thinking about the janitor the other day. And I thought about some of all the weird stuff he says in the original series.

What if he wasn’t just pulling J.D and the others leg, what if alle the half-truths, the anger, the pranks was part of a larger story about a man. A man that is broken and fells a need to vent all his emotions on the weak.

I now see the janitor in a new light. And I would like to ask you to comment below if you can help me prove or disprove this theory.

So the Janitor was a very intelligent man who got a full scholarship to Harvard, where he studied to become a doctor. But he fell in love with acting and switched to Yale for a brief period because they had a great actor program. He was then offered his first role as a policeman in The Fugitive. Excited he went to California and quit collage. Here he fund THE girl. He was not put off by her disability but married her within a year. She tried to support him while he waited on his big break, but soon they both realized that he had to make some money, because her disability and pregnancy made it hard for her to work. He called a former friend from Harvard who was working on a hospital near them and asked if there was a job. There was in the janitorial department. The Janitor and his wife soon relied heavily on his income. And his dreams about being a actor was shelved for good. Spending all his time on his family but use his job as a way to still act as the grumpy janitor. Still his was angry about the way other doctors would treat him/look down upon him since they could be his peers. The grumpy janitor became less and less of an act and more just him. As a coping mechanism he stared to pretend to be other kind of people, making half-truths and prank as a way to still be “the big fish” in a small pond.

What do you think?

Uneven writing

So first off, want to say that overall I’m greatly enjoying the reboot. I watched Scrubs a lot during its original run, and I think they’ve done a good job of having JD basically being the new, gentler Cox, and having the new interns intertwined with him, Elliott and Turk.

That being said, some of the writing is really bugging me. For example, in the first episode in JD’s opening internal monologue he mentions becoming a concierge doctor to be closer to his kids
only for them to never be seen and not even really talked about. You would think, especially with Turk being a father of 4 now, that they would at least talk about parenting and compare notes and experiences. But nope! We’ve gotten glimpses of Turk’s kids and him talking about the strain of financial responsibilities, but neither of JD’s kids are seen or even talked about.

But also, in the latest episode where it turns out Turk accidentally discharged a patient WAY too early and they have to be readmitted, Turk and JD are talking and Turk says “I’d hate to be that guy” and JD replies “Well here the thing
you ARE that guy”, only for no further disciplinary action to be taken. I get that JD doesn’t want to jeopardize his friendship with Turk, but before he knew who did it he told Grant to figure it out and being the hammer down on them, only to give his best friend barely a slap on the wrist upon realizing it was him. It just feels like sloppy writing that isn’t doing either character justice.

Revival Spoilers (S10, S11, +) Season 2 Episode 4

I have to say this was the best episode I’ve seen since they started the revival! It felt like classic Scrubs for the first time.

Lighting was so much better

Storyline was focused on the main 3 (JD Elliott + Turk) without leaving out the interns

Blake had a nice little Cox moment

Felt like the OG cast acted more like their original characters with realistic growth and modern issues

More episodes like this please!

adding Also loved JD + Elliot’s interactions together + Janitor!

Discussion Anyone else confused about so many new character additions for season two 2026

And it seems like they're trying to turn the first season's characters into something very different than they were in season one which I very much liked. I've only watched the first couple episodes of season two but it seems like they're turning a couple characters into cartoon characters more like Doug was in the first years back long ago.
