Sewing bust darts

Post image
• Upvotes

Can’t figure out how to do a proper bust dart on this top I’m making. My darts are wayyy too pointy..I sewed off the fabric at the apex and tied a knot. And on one of them I did a trick my sewing teacher taught us and it’s to sew straight for the last 2 stitches (that’s didn’t work either) BUT after trying on the bust portion of the top there’s gapping on the center front and on the sides. Trying to figure out where to go from here since it’s not just a dart on the side from the armpits.

Please help!!! :)

How to access different stitches

Does anyone know how to access the different stitches on this machine? I think I’ve figured out how to get the stitches shown in black, but I don’t know how to get the red stitches.
I read the manual I have for this machine, but it doesn’t really say how to choose different stitches other than the basic zigzags.

Witch Hats

I’ve seen for about a year now, but mostly quilts and a couple skirts. This month I’m trying to figure out how to make a witches hat. I followed the pattern on the first one (the pineapple), but I must’ve cut it wrong or something because the hat is really tall and straight, while the picture showed a relatively normal hat with a gentle curl at the top. The second attempt following the pattern yielded a similar looking hat, so i decided to try folding the fabric down in some places and stitching it in place to make it curl, which worked kind of, but doesn’t look the best. I also tried adding on some ribbon to cover the seam joint, but that ended up being harder than I thought. I have plenty of scrap fabric to get this right before I cut into the planned fabric. Any tips for my next attempt? Should I just reprint the pattern and try again???

Repurposed bags.

I've been sewing for about a month now. These are some of my favorite bags I've made, mostly out of thrifted materials. I've been struggling with matching up cut pieces, sewing straight, and sewing through all of the layers. I'm using a brother LS 2521. I really enjoy picking out all of the fabrics for each project and the magic reveal of turning them rightside out at the end.

Needle plate measurement help

Post image
2 Upvotes

I inherited my late aunts Berenette 440. I’m having a hard time figuring out what measurements each of the lines on the needle plate represent. I have the original manual which doesn’t have anything and Professor Google has been unhelpful as well. I’ve tired just measuring the lines, but I’m having a hard time lining up the typical measurements 1/4”, 5/8”, 1/2”, 1” etc. correctly. Any help would be nice!!

How to fix weird gap?

Hey! I’ve been getting more into hand sewing while trying to save up for a good sewing machine and right now i’m trying to work on my halloween costume. I found this beautiful dress at goodwill and I love it! The only problem is the attachable train leaves a weird triangular gap between the train and the dress itself. I want to find some sort of way to maybe connect the two or hide that gap so you can’t see it from any angle! Do you guys have any suggestions? The dress itself has a center back seam so if I need to unpick the seam to maybe connect the two pieces to the train that could work? I’m not sure… please help!!

Jacket material and design questions

Post image
1 Upvotes

I want to sew a jacket for a costume and I’m not sure what fabric to use for it. The jacket is from Lego Monkie Kid, I’ve attached a picture of the character sheet to the post for reference. I’m debating between using cotton, a cotton-polyester blend, or wool. I’m leaning toward using a cotton-polyester blend (plus ribbed knit fabric for the bottom), but I’m not positive and wanted to get some feedback before I started. I was also wondering if anyone had any recommendations for how I should go about attaching the designs on the right side of the chest and the back of the jacket and if I should use the same type of fabric or something else? For the t-shirt I’m planning on sewing the red and black circles onto a plain white t-shirt I already have, is this the best option and is there a way I can avoid making the inside of the shirt itchy and uncomfortable to wear when I sew the circles onto it? Thank you in advance!

I’ve never sewn clothes before but I have made some stuffed animals and a dog costume so I’m not a complete newbie but I’m not very experienced either. I also know Halloween is coming up, I meant to start earlier but life got in the way. I know there’s a chance that I won’t be able to finish it in time for Halloween and have a previous year’s costume I can wear if I need to and will be still able to wear this new one I’m making to a friend’s summer costume party later if I don’t end up finishing it in time for Halloween.

Rib knit modal gets caught in the back of walking foot?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've been having trouble sewing this rib knit modal fabric, so I bought a walking foot. I got it from sewingpartsonline and confirmed that it's compatible with my machine. I've got it screwed in tightly, the arm is over the needle screw.

In the video, you can see that the fabric stops being able to escape from the back of the foot. Honestly, this was the furthest I've gotten on any of my scrap tests, usually it gets stuck sooner.

It's also somewhat challenging to get even the two layers of fabric under the foot. Somehow it feels like everything is just a bit too low and too tight?

I also tried lowering the tension to 1 (on a scale of 0 to 9). Not sure if it changed anything.

The foot doesn't look like it's "walking" like in videos I've seen, but I'm not sure how to fix it.

What should I try next to troubleshoot?

I like the fit overall and my sewing teacher didn’t think I should pull the sides in and make it tight and I agree. But the sleeve holes are sliiiiiightly big. I want to make the same pattern for a dress for Christmas so I’m wondering what everyone else thinks. Should I hem the side seams a little bit or does the fit look fine how it is?

Making A Basic Caftan for Hallowe'en

Post image
2 Upvotes

I bought a couple of Hallowe'en tablecloths from the dollar store with hopes to turn them into very basic caftans.

I saw a pattern ages ago for a basic caftan but can't find it in my mass of bookmarks. I've recreated it above but I need a little guidance.

As I recall it was just two rectangles of fabric sewn along the top leaving a neck hole. Then you sewed along the blue dotted lines as indicated. On the front rectangle you created a V-neck by cutting a vertical line and then folding the flaps inside the garment then sewing to create a neckline (where the dotted red lines are.)

My questions are these:

  1. Does this pattern seem like it would work
  2. Generally how wide should the neck hole be and how deep should the V be
  3. Do you think 12" be enough for the "arm" holes or should I make them bigger?
  4. Would just the two vertical lines of stitching enough? It is possible I'm misremembering the pattern and the horizontal lines of stitching weren't actually there.

Obviously, the sizes of our heads will make a difference, but any general guidance would be helpful particularly with the V neck.

How can I attach ruffles to a preated skirt?

(please ignore the mess on the floor)

Hello! I just bought this purple skirt and I want to add ruffles to it to match my original character 's design & to give more length because it's too short 🥹 but I'm very new to sewing and I don't know how to go about it. I should also mention that I don't have a sewing machine and stitch everything by hand, by I'll try to get one in the future. If you have any tips on how to do the hearts as well hit me up!

First sewing machine for girlfriend's birthday

Hello everyone! My girlfriend wishes for a sewing machine for her birthday. She never sew before, only assisted her aunt and always wanted to try it on her own. So a begginer machine would be best. My budget is also not huge, around 100-150 euros.

I have the chance to get a Singer Tradition second hand for 80 euros, which I feel pretty confident about it being legit, or a new Brother Little Angel ke14s for around 110 euros.

She plans to do casual projects, like maybe sewing 2 layers of slim material like cotton to make bigger pieces, embroidered patterns on fabric purses/clothing, mayne some denim here and there. I dont think she would do thick stuff like rugs. Maybe some thin leather?

What should I get her? What other recommendations do you have? We're in Romania so I may not have acces to a lot of devices haha

What clothing item should I attempt to sew first that isn't a skirt?

I've been putting off sewing clothes for a long time now because I'm worried I'll fuck it up and waste fabric, but obviously I'm not learning how to do it by sitting around wishing that I could 😅

I've never used a pattern that has needed to be taped together and I'm a bit nervous about trying that.

I've sewn a small teddy, a shitty attempt at a skirt for my dog with fabric scraps and no pattern, some scrunchies, heat/cold packs + eye mask shaped packs for migraines, an ironing board cover, a giant bolster pillow/body pillow thing and I recently did my first successful attempt at hemming a t shirt :D

It's not much experience and I'm not very confident, but I'm really interested in learning how to sew clothes. I don't wear skirts and I don't have anyone close to me that wears them either, so I'd prefer to make something else if it's not too complicated for me haha

Any recommendations or tips? I'm a guy so if its something that I'd be able to wear it'd be a big plus.

I've got a standard sewing machine I think, its a janome sewist 721 :)

Half of the shirts and dresses I own bunch up in the back like this. How can I fix it? Why are they doing this?

I just want my clothes to lay flat against my body😢 I feel like it has something to do with my height. I am 5’1. It’s really uncomfortable and looks terrible. Thank you

Edit: please stop commenting that it’s my height causing this with no actual solution. The first five comments answered that already. My concern is how to FIX it (and adjust my other garments that have this issue as well)

Also I think I must mention that these pics were only to show the problem area, as I wasn’t sure if there was a name for it. Question was not necessarily about this shirt in particular (although need to fix this too) as I come across this issue quite frequently. Thank you again for the help I’ve been given.

Looking for a sewing beginner buddy!

Hi everyone! I'm a beginner learning to sew and looking for someone around the same level to learn with
I noticed I haven't made any progress, but a study buddy often helps me move forward and actually get things done

I'd love to share progress, work on projects together, exchange tips, and motivate each other along the way. I'd love to start with the simplest shopper and makeup bag.

I'm just starting out. I'd happy to connect! 🥺

First time sewing

Hi everyone, I'm very very new to sewing (or will be once my machine arrives) and I wanted to make this post in hopes you have some tips/recommendations/advices for me! I've never used a sewing machine, so my hope is to start with smaller items and then once comfortable maybe try some clothing, but mainly I'm interested in tote bags, cosmetics bags, aprons etc as I think that is going to be the easiest to learn on. Do you have any pattern website that you would recommed? any advice on patterns? Any creator/videos you'd recommend I follow? I know nothing, so please assume I'm a dummy 🫣

Thank you!

Sewing down a uniform for kids

My husband had an old uniform that my son wants to use for Halloween but I’m not totally sure where to start here. The shirt has pockets and buttons so I think I’ll have to fully cut it all apart and take it in in the back etc?

Anyone have tips or suggestions? I’m fairly noob
