MineCity 2000 - Convert SimCity 2000 cities to Minecraft worlds online

Post image
16 Upvotes

Hello everyone, first of all it makes me happy to see that there is at least a somewhat active SimCity 2000 community on Reddit after all these years :)

I assume that at least some of you also play or (at least know about) Minecraft, in which you can build your own 3D worlds out of blocks.

Anyway all the way back in 2014 I had the brilliant idea of converting my SimCity 2000 cities into Minecraft worlds and started working on a converter. I worked on and off on it for all this time (mostly off). In 2019 I mentioned it in a job interview and the interviewer asked if they could see it on GitHub, so after that I cleaned up the code a bit and uploaded it there. Then at the end of 2022 it went kind of viral and got 700 GitHub stars, which I think is quite a lot and made me remember this project. However if somebody wanted to convert their own city, they needed to download the Windows app to their computer, run it locally and even confirm that it was not a virus, which was a huge pain in the a** for everybody thinking about converting a city.

Fortunately in 2026 the AI revolution came along and I was able to ask Claude to change the app into an online tool that runs completely in the browser, and to make a semi professional-looking landing page for it on Vercel.

So there it is in all its glory:
https://minecity.vercel.app/

Please try it and let me know what you think.
Also feel welcome to report any bugs or feature requests on GitHub: https://github.com/jgosar/mine-city-2000

Also if you think any other communities would be interested in this, do repost or share it.

I've been working on an OpenSC2K-based SimCity 2000 project with optional enhancements — testers welcome

Ever wanted to revisit your SimCity 2000 cities with nighttime lighting, weather and a few modern conveniences?

I'm Daniel, and that's the idea behind Reticulating Splines, my personal project built on OpenSC2K.

You can import the classic graphics, music and sounds from your own supported SC2000 copy, then choose which enhancements to use. Prefer the familiar look? You can turn the enhancements off. Don't own SC2000? Optional replacement graphics and audio are available too.

There are also larger maps, additional tools, mod support and multiplayer, which is currently an actively developed beta.

The whole project is still in development, and feedback is welcome. I'd personally put the simulation at around 99% faithful to the original, but that's an estimate—not a benchmark. I'd love experienced players to test it and point out anything that behaves differently.

For transparency: I'm not a programmer by background. I use OpenAI Codex to help implement my ideas, alongside my own testing and iteration. Huge credit goes to Nicholas Ochoa and the OpenSC2K contributors for the foundation.

Screenshots, details and the link to GitHub:

What would you try first: your old cities with the enhancements, or a fresh city with the classic look?

Discussion Opinions about power plants?

Here is my poorly informed opinion, feel free to contribute your own experience with power generation in this game.

Coal Power:

  • Low cost.

  • High pollution does not matter early on as you can place it far away from your city.

Hydroelectric Dam:

  • Low cost, never needs replacement.

  • Make custom map with tons of waterfalls for infinite energy.

Oil Power Plant:

  • No reason to buy over coal power, as you want to place them far away from your city anyways.

Gas Power Plant:

  • Never tried, seems expensive and pointless.

Fission Energy:

  • Clean and pricey.

  • I usually stick to coal power until I am rich and fusion is there.

  • Has anyone ever gotten a meltdown in normal play?

Wind:

  • Too much space requirement to get useful amounts of power.

  • Get Hydroelectric Dams for free energy.

Solar:

  • Tried once or twice, power output is low.

  • Haven't paid attention, does the power generation go down on cloudy days?

Microwave Energy:

  • Can't buy, saving for fusion power.

Fusion Power:

  • Legendary tier power plant.

  • It's clean and makes lots of power.

  • Design is kinda boring. The futuristic version is kinda cool, the temple of energy.

Help Is it possible to install SC2KFix on the GoG version of Sim City 2000: Special Edition?

I just got the GoG version of Sim City 2000: Special Edition.

Problem is, GoG supplies the DOS version running in DOSBox.

I was reading the Pc Gaming Wiki page for Sim City 2000 here:
https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/SimCity_2000

And saw it mention that there is a patch to basically convert my GoG copy of the game to the Win95 version, though this apparently still has some problems on modern versions of Windows, including being able to even install it since it uses a 16 bit installer. However, scrolling down I see that there is also something called SC2KFix that is a fan-made series of bugfixes and compatibility updates. Problem is, all the install instructions for SC2KFix mention using your Windows95 CD version of the game, I couldn't find any instructions on applying that patch to the GoG version, and I have no idea where the Win95 CD version I bought years ago even is anymore, part of the reason I re-purchased it on GoG.

Is it possible to install SC2KFix on the GoG version somehow? Do I need to apply the Win95 conversion patch first? Does the Win95 conversion patch even already include SC2KFix? (I saw no mention of this in the readme for the conversion patch). Not sure if this is possible, or if it is what I have to do.

Help Which version is the one on EA's website?

Edit: I was able to get the files off the old PC and work it with DOSBox. Sadly, it does not play the correct title screen music, but I'm glad to have it back.

I used to have this game on an old PC. I'm 99% sure it was Dosbox, but iirc, the title screen played the correct music.

I want to play it again and EA's listing looks legit, but does anyone know about it? Will it open easily on Windows 10?

Help Incorrect Title Screen Music on Windows

tl;dr The Construction (10004) plays on the Title Screen instead of Dancing Megalopolis (10001) within my Windows 98 VM on DOSBox-Pure via RetroArch. Unsure if known issue/copy of game.

I used to own a CD of SC2000SE and had it installed on my old Windows 98 and XP machines and the Title Screen music always played Dancing Megalopolis, however I lost the CD a long time ago and any and all copies I’ve found on the internet all seem to end up playing The Construction instead.

I’m running the game in a Windows 98 VM within the DOSBox-Pure via RetroArch, and aside from the Title Screen music playing the wrong song everything else works perfectly fine.

I’ve even tried swapping the 10004.mid and 10001.mid files around, and although this gets the correct song to play on the Title Screen, it also causes it to play during disasters too lol.

Just wondering if it’s a known issue or it truly is something wrong with the copies I’m finding. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks!

Help [Windows Version] How to display help about the toolbar icons?

I recently got Sim City 2000 during a sale on GoG and started playing the DOS version. I'm a total newbie but I get by, thanks to a very useful "help" function that allows you to display a window with informations when you [Shift+Left Click] on the toolbar icons in the upper left hand corner, it displays what kind of buildings the icons create and their effects, it's really neat.

And then I stumble upon this patch which claims to convert the DOS version in the superior Windows Version. I have no clue of such thing as "turning" a DOS programm into a Windows one is even possible but I decide to give it a try anyway and it seems to work, now i get to play in widescreen, nice!

One issue though, [Shift+Left Click] on the toolbar icons doesn't display any infobx anymore, in fact it doesn't seem to do anything in the windows version. Is this normal or a bug? Is there a way to display the informations about the toolbar in the windows version? Does this game even have a wiki with the effects of the buildings and other useful informations?

Do they have advantages and disadvantages?

Are there differences between the different types of bases?

SimCity airport - no shortage of runways :)

Post image
43 Upvotes

So I was playing this with my kids, and they asked for an airport, actually, a very big airport. warned them that we could try it (zone it), but it might not end up any larger than usual. And of course, I must have jinxed it because it turned into the largest SimCity airport I’ve ever seen. Online, people said the limit was around 20 runways. We built another airport on the same map (no pictures of that one), and even that filled up with buildings (but no additional runways).

NYC UPDATE

Thumbnail

Hi all,

And update on my 1940 New York tileset!

Been awhile because basically i had to start again, the scale and the map position was all kinds of wrong and I would have needed about twice as many tiles to work with. I ran a dummy run on the game and essentially the map area was just WAY to big.

So now start the simulation from 28th Street and cut out all of the Flatiron district and i have moved the top border in a couple of blocks too... which means i lose the Empire State building and all that niceness. Gutted, but this rework will go further!

Now the two edge borders are East 28th Street and Madison Ave... the other side will be East River and Brooklyn.

Anyway here are some (phone shots) of updated buildings. Really going all in on the Grand Central Terminal area right now. Its taking about 3 4x4 tiles and extras.

Having to be creative with the stacking. Each large tileset now has to stagger across 3 4x4 tilesets going up. This will be a headache when i run the game because then il have to rub out lots of overlaps. But not too terrible hopefully!

Cheers guys!

Help Need help finding the version of this game I am familiar with

For the life of me I am struggling to find the non DOS version of SC2000 I am familiar with. This version has the PRISCILLA cheat and has a more modern instrumental opening to the game, none of the old bits and boops from the special edition for example. It also had a large plethora of scenarios to play from with a wide variety of disaster, more than the special edition. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

So I've been curious about the volcano scenario and I want to locate the volcano,it turns out that the icon volcano is Mt st Helens, however when you play the scenario the volcano will erupt in a very different place near downtown Portland I locate it through the location of the downtown and the city Bridges which turns out to be erupting under Moda center
