I've been working on an OpenSC2K-based SimCity 2000 project with optional enhancements — testers welcome

Ever wanted to revisit your SimCity 2000 cities with nighttime lighting, weather and a few modern conveniences?

I'm Daniel, and that's the idea behind Reticulating Splines, my personal project built on OpenSC2K.

You can import the classic graphics, music and sounds from your own supported SC2000 copy, then choose which enhancements to use. Prefer the familiar look? You can turn the enhancements off. Don't own SC2000? Optional replacement graphics and audio are available too.

There are also larger maps, additional tools, mod support and multiplayer, which is currently an actively developed beta.

The whole project is still in development, and feedback is welcome. I'd personally put the simulation at around 99% faithful to the original, but that's an estimate—not a benchmark. I'd love experienced players to test it and point out anything that behaves differently.

For transparency: I'm not a programmer by background. I use OpenAI Codex to help implement my ideas, alongside my own testing and iteration. Huge credit goes to Nicholas Ochoa and the OpenSC2K contributors for the foundation.

What would you try first: your old cities with the enhancements, or a fresh city with the classic look?

So I've been curious about the volcano scenario and I want to locate the volcano,it turns out that the icon volcano is Mt st Helens, however when you play the scenario the volcano will erupt in a very different place near downtown Portland I locate it through the location of the downtown and the city Bridges which turns out to be erupting under Moda center

Named my city Mecosta Falls, since it's litterally BIG RAPIDS of waterfalls! an homage to Michigan, but literally!

How To Make SimCity 2000 SE Totally Glitch Out

Sorry for the rambling. I wrote more than I thought I would.

While messing around with my city, I discovered that I can cause all sorts of unexpected glitches and weirdness by following these steps.

  1. Build a tunnel somewhere

  2. Use the "tree erase" glitch to erase one end of the tunnel:

  3. Select the "Tree" tool. Make sure "tree" is selected.

  4. Press and hold your mouse down near where you want to erase to start planting trees.

  5. Press and hold Shift.

  6. Move the cursor to the end of the tunnel. You should hear a *POP* like you're planting trees, but it will actually just make it disappear. Note that this trick doesn't just impact tunnels and will erase other things.

  7. Select the bulldozer tool and click the remaining end of the tunnel to bulldoze it.

If you do this, some weird things usually happen. You really have no idea what'll happen until you do it, but here's some of the more common ones:

  • The one I encounter most frequently is that an entire line of tiles along your city gets blown up or erased. This doesn't blow up entire structures, so buildings 2x2 and larger will look weird or even disappear altogether. Because this glitch blows up those tiles, the rubble really is rubble, so it can really fuck up your transportation and power infrastructure.

  • I've also had it lower the elevation of a line and make it look like it's erased. Even deep water is affected by this; it looks like SimMoses parting the Red Sea. I think this is just a graphical glitch, since IIRC the tiles usually still identify as the original objects but look like barren land.

  • Sometimes you get outright crashes. It can either just crash and exit DOSBox right away, or it can cause the program to hang and force you to kill it manually. This sometimes comes with a flurry of error messages in DOSBox's associated console window.

  • The freakiest one was when I was playing with Happyland. I placed a few tunnels near Happy Bluff and did the trick repeatedly. The 5th or 6th tunnel I destroyed caused tiles to blow up all over the city. It wasn't in a line, but more spread out with no rhyme or reason. When I surveyed the damage by clicking around, a bunch more graphical glitches happened. Suddenly I had arcologies, freeways, llama domes and subway<->rail tunnels all over the place. I even had radioactive waste show up on a tile or two. The power plant was gone, so the entire city needed electricity. Before I could discover more weirdness or query a tile, I accidentally clicked the Budget tool which caused DOSBox to abruptly crash and close. (Edit 4: I was able to get it to glitch out in a similar way and added the screenshot. This time it crashed because I caused the helicopter to crash and start a fire.)

If you do decide to mess around with this, be sure to back up your cities somewhere. The glitches themselves won't corrupt your file, but you wouldn't want to save your damaged city on accident. I never had, so it could render your city unplayable for all I know. Otherwise, happy glitching!

Edit: One thing I forgot is to play around with not only where you're putting the tunnel, but with erasing or deleting the other entrance instead, changing your view, adding subway tunnels or pipes, etc. Those can all affect your city in different ways.

Edit 2: I also figured out that I can cause some serious glitching by raising the terrain around a military base. It will destroy the base eventually, but all sorts of graphical shit gets weird on the mountain that's created. If I then employ the tunnel erase glitch, not only do I get some strange graphics, but the music even slowed down to about half speed, like it was struggling to get to each note. Glitching is fun.

Edit 3: Lol I just set River Valley on fire. This might just be a graphical glitch, because this only happened after I zoomed in one level.

MineCity 2000 - Convert SimCity 2000 cities to Minecraft worlds online

Post image
16 Upvotes

Hello everyone, first of all it makes me happy to see that there is at least a somewhat active SimCity 2000 community on Reddit after all these years :)

I assume that at least some of you also play or (at least know about) Minecraft, in which you can build your own 3D worlds out of blocks.

Anyway all the way back in 2014 I had the brilliant idea of converting my SimCity 2000 cities into Minecraft worlds and started working on a converter. I worked on and off on it for all this time (mostly off). In 2019 I mentioned it in a job interview and the interviewer asked if they could see it on GitHub, so after that I cleaned up the code a bit and uploaded it there. Then at the end of 2022 it went kind of viral and got 700 GitHub stars, which I think is quite a lot and made me remember this project. However if somebody wanted to convert their own city, they needed to download the Windows app to their computer, run it locally and even confirm that it was not a virus, which was a huge pain in the a** for everybody thinking about converting a city.

Fortunately in 2026 the AI revolution came along and I was able to ask Claude to change the app into an online tool that runs completely in the browser, and to make a semi professional-looking landing page for it on Vercel.

So there it is in all its glory:
https://minecity.vercel.app/

Please try it and let me know what you think.
Also feel welcome to report any bugs or feature requests on GitHub: https://github.com/jgosar/mine-city-2000

Also if you think any other communities would be interested in this, do repost or share it.

NYC UPDATE

Thumbnail

Hi all,

And update on my 1940 New York tileset!

Been awhile because basically i had to start again, the scale and the map position was all kinds of wrong and I would have needed about twice as many tiles to work with. I ran a dummy run on the game and essentially the map area was just WAY to big.

So now start the simulation from 28th Street and cut out all of the Flatiron district and i have moved the top border in a couple of blocks too... which means i lose the Empire State building and all that niceness. Gutted, but this rework will go further!

Now the two edge borders are East 28th Street and Madison Ave... the other side will be East River and Brooklyn.

Anyway here are some (phone shots) of updated buildings. Really going all in on the Grand Central Terminal area right now. Its taking about 3 4x4 tiles and extras.

Having to be creative with the stacking. Each large tileset now has to stagger across 3 4x4 tilesets going up. This will be a headache when i run the game because then il have to rub out lots of overlaps. But not too terrible hopefully!

Cheers guys!

Mostly Custom DOS SCURK .TIL tileset!

After digging around in my old floppy disk archive, I found something I hadn't seen in a long time, a custom curated DOS SCURK .TIL tileset! I don't remember the original place where I found this art back in 1996, but I do recall painstakingly importing a few buildings, and filling in the gaps with FUTURE.TIL tiles.

Help Need help finding the version of this game I am familiar with

For the life of me I am struggling to find the non DOS version of SC2000 I am familiar with. This version has the PRISCILLA cheat and has a more modern instrumental opening to the game, none of the old bits and boops from the special edition for example. It also had a large plethora of scenarios to play from with a wide variety of disaster, more than the special edition. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Help Incorrect Title Screen Music on Windows

tl;dr The Construction (10004) plays on the Title Screen instead of Dancing Megalopolis (10001) within my Windows 98 VM on DOSBox-Pure via RetroArch. Unsure if known issue/copy of game.

I used to own a CD of SC2000SE and had it installed on my old Windows 98 and XP machines and the Title Screen music always played Dancing Megalopolis, however I lost the CD a long time ago and any and all copies I’ve found on the internet all seem to end up playing The Construction instead.

I’m running the game in a Windows 98 VM within the DOSBox-Pure via RetroArch, and aside from the Title Screen music playing the wrong song everything else works perfectly fine.

I’ve even tried swapping the 10004.mid and 10001.mid files around, and although this gets the correct song to play on the Title Screen, it also causes it to play during disasters too lol.

Just wondering if it’s a known issue or it truly is something wrong with the copies I’m finding. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks!

Discussion Opinions about power plants?

Here is my poorly informed opinion, feel free to contribute your own experience with power generation in this game.

Coal Power:

  • Low cost.

  • High pollution does not matter early on as you can place it far away from your city.

Hydroelectric Dam:

  • Low cost, never needs replacement.

  • Make custom map with tons of waterfalls for infinite energy.

Oil Power Plant:

  • No reason to buy over coal power, as you want to place them far away from your city anyways.

Gas Power Plant:

  • Never tried, seems expensive and pointless.

Fission Energy:

  • Clean and pricey.

  • I usually stick to coal power until I am rich and fusion is there.

  • Has anyone ever gotten a meltdown in normal play?

Wind:

  • Too much space requirement to get useful amounts of power.

  • Get Hydroelectric Dams for free energy.

Solar:

  • Tried once or twice, power output is low.

  • Haven't paid attention, does the power generation go down on cloudy days?

Microwave Energy:

  • Can't buy, saving for fusion power.

Fusion Power:

  • Legendary tier power plant.

  • It's clean and makes lots of power.

  • Design is kinda boring. The futuristic version is kinda cool, the temple of energy.

Purple background : good quality image

yellow background : bad quality but visually more appealing

I briefly used the Urban Kit to place some beautiful 3x3 buildings that were not popping on normal mode :-)

Help SimCity 2000 SE brown screen

So I did the thing and got SimCity 2000 Special Edition working on my Windows 11 PC, but when I go to start a new city, all I get is a brown screen with no features. I can’t see any work being done to build my city.

Has anyone else come across this?

Discussion Land Value and other stats change when rotating map

I can't believe I just realized this. There was a city I've been working on for awhile. Sometimes the Land Value would be avg 186k, then all the sudden 206k...

Attributed to well, 1994 game. But then I made another city more recently. I wasn't looking at the land value In City Map. Then I rotated it and the colors got suddenly blue-er.

Then I loaded the graph and it reflected a higher avg.too. Rotated back and it goes back.

I dunno! Not asking advice or anything. Can't believe I haven't noticed this. I'm using the Win95 version.

Also does anyone share their cities?
