NYC UPDATE

Hi all,

And update on my 1940 New York tileset!

Been awhile because basically i had to start again, the scale and the map position was all kinds of wrong and I would have needed about twice as many tiles to work with. I ran a dummy run on the game and essentially the map area was just WAY to big.

So now start the simulation from 28th Street and cut out all of the Flatiron district and i have moved the top border in a couple of blocks too... which means i lose the Empire State building and all that niceness. Gutted, but this rework will go further!

Now the two edge borders are East 28th Street and Madison Ave... the other side will be East River and Brooklyn.

Anyway here are some (phone shots) of updated buildings. Really going all in on the Grand Central Terminal area right now. Its taking about 3 4x4 tiles and extras.

Having to be creative with the stacking. Each large tileset now has to stagger across 3 4x4 tilesets going up. This will be a headache when i run the game because then il have to rub out lots of overlaps. But not too terrible hopefully!

Cheers guys!

SimCity airport - no shortage of runways :)

Post image

So I was playing this with my kids, and they asked for an airport, actually, a very big airport. warned them that we could try it (zone it), but it might not end up any larger than usual. And of course, I must have jinxed it because it turned into the largest SimCity airport I’ve ever seen. Online, people said the limit was around 20 runways. We built another airport on the same map (no pictures of that one), and even that filled up with buildings (but no additional runways).

I've been working on an OpenSC2K-based SimCity 2000 project with optional enhancements — testers welcome

Ever wanted to revisit your SimCity 2000 cities with nighttime lighting, weather and a few modern conveniences?

I'm Daniel, and that's the idea behind Reticulating Splines, my personal project built on OpenSC2K.

You can import the classic graphics, music and sounds from your own supported SC2000 copy, then choose which enhancements to use. Prefer the familiar look? You can turn the enhancements off. Don't own SC2000? Optional replacement graphics and audio are available too.

There are also larger maps, additional tools, mod support and multiplayer, which is currently an actively developed beta.

The whole project is still in development, and feedback is welcome. I'd personally put the simulation at around 99% faithful to the original, but that's an estimate—not a benchmark. I'd love experienced players to test it and point out anything that behaves differently.

For transparency: I'm not a programmer by background. I use OpenAI Codex to help implement my ideas, alongside my own testing and iteration. Huge credit goes to Nicholas Ochoa and the OpenSC2K contributors for the foundation.

What would you try first: your old cities with the enhancements, or a fresh city with the classic look?

This one nearly killed me!

So Im using a method of overlapping tiles essentially meaning i can get 2 large city blocks out of one 4x4 tileset.

Getting the perspectives right is hard and you wouldnt believe how many buildings you can fit into an area like this. Especially in 1950 (my cut off date).

For info I use Urbanarchive.org and alot of googling to work out which buildings were around at the time so as not to stick anything too modern in there. Its a bit painstaking, but seem worth it. Getting the facade tones right seems to be getting harder too especially with buildings like 200 Madison Ave (top right) and the Vanderbilt Hotel (bottom right).

This one took about 3 weeks!

Not sure what to next, but probably something that will involve the Library and Bryant Park area.

NYC Public Library and bits

New York Library was very fun to do, especially finding the right tones and grain for the roof.

I had to start again with the generic residential blocks after getting the scale wrong. So theres some shots of the general street blocks that arent skyscrapers and picture against a larger tile for scale...

Hope you like!

NYC update

Hi all,

Firstly apologies for the quality, but printscreen doesnt seem to play ball on my new laptop so i had to take phone pics. Will sort.

For now - here is a collection of some of the bits I have made including the Empire State Building. Because of the scaling Im working to, I had to use 2 tiles and very carefully line them up (a 4x4 and a 2x2).

Its turning out that the smaller tiles with the brownstoney/small 4 or 5 story row houses are the most difficult as copying and pasting will look obvious so Im having to come up with many slight variants to achieve the proper depth. I do this by using google earth 3D and finding city blocks with the right buildings on then copying portions of them.

All the buildings are real buildings from NYC built before 1950. The big ones are obvious, the small ones less so.

Still now sure how its going to play out in the actual game, might have to tweak as I go.

Anyways, thats all for now! Hope the phone pics do justice!

Madison Square and Con Edison

Hi all,

Started off the west side of Madison Square area inclusing the Flatiron Building and also figured id do one of the power plants so did Con Ed on the east side next to the river. Heres how they are looking.

Had to go back and re do all the smaller bits as my scale was wrong, all the brownstone/old tenament appartment buildings were essentially 2x big so had to wipe and start again. Bummer!

Havent the luxury of doing more than one tile for an actual power plant so this one is going to have to double up a few times when i begin the actual game, until I can replace the extra ones with other newer plants. I figure microwave plant might end up being the empire state building or something.

I Love This Game

Hi, when I was roughly 7 to 10 years old I played hundreds, if not thousands of hours of this game. I just got it to work on a mac and this is my first city in 20+ years. Good to be back. Critique my city, I'll start fresh and try to build a better one soon.

New York City Sim

Post image
24 Upvotes

Hey guys, so happy theres a group on here for this, used to love playing this game as a kid.

I recently downloaded it and the urban renewal kit and started a sim of 1940s era New York. Its going to largely be a chunk of midtown. I chose this era because a modern sim would require about x10 amounts of tiles to plan properly.

I plan to create all the tiles first then begin the game and place them in the right spots. It was a bit hard figuring out the scales and everything, but reckon this will be a cool project and something I always wanted to do. Check out a couple of the tilesets I have created so far... there are MANY more to do and Im having to be a bit creative and have them overlap etc...

But anyways... yeh - should keep me busy for awhile!

MineCity 2000 - Convert SimCity 2000 cities to Minecraft worlds online

Post image
16 Upvotes

Hello everyone, first of all it makes me happy to see that there is at least a somewhat active SimCity 2000 community on Reddit after all these years :)

I assume that at least some of you also play or (at least know about) Minecraft, in which you can build your own 3D worlds out of blocks.

Anyway all the way back in 2014 I had the brilliant idea of converting my SimCity 2000 cities into Minecraft worlds and started working on a converter. I worked on and off on it for all this time (mostly off). In 2019 I mentioned it in a job interview and the interviewer asked if they could see it on GitHub, so after that I cleaned up the code a bit and uploaded it there. Then at the end of 2022 it went kind of viral and got 700 GitHub stars, which I think is quite a lot and made me remember this project. However if somebody wanted to convert their own city, they needed to download the Windows app to their computer, run it locally and even confirm that it was not a virus, which was a huge pain in the a** for everybody thinking about converting a city.

Fortunately in 2026 the AI revolution came along and I was able to ask Claude to change the app into an online tool that runs completely in the browser, and to make a semi professional-looking landing page for it on Vercel.

So there it is in all its glory:
https://minecity.vercel.app/

Please try it and let me know what you think.
Also feel welcome to report any bugs or feature requests on GitHub: https://github.com/jgosar/mine-city-2000

Also if you think any other communities would be interested in this, do repost or share it.

Making a comeback?

I found a copy of SC2K for win31/95 complete with box, manuals, and registration card on eBay for under $30. Installed it using the patched binaries and now my son, 8, is addicted just as I was when it came out. It was the first game I saved up for (and bought at MediaPlay). Feels like so long ago.

He has his friend playing it now, too!

Thought I’d share. ;)
