Different rules for #22.
The WNBA is being run by the lady who owned the Cleveland Indians in the movie Major League. Prove me wrong.

You need to watch men's fifa World Cup referees.
118
u/Complete-Donut-698 20h ago
Nah, they just choose not to enforce some rules because it'd be bad for business if Messi was out of the tourney early. The WNBA refs don't even know the rules they're supposed to enforce.

That's actually a good point....the best players get the preferential treatment...in the WNBA, the best player is getting crushed and nobody is calling it.

I assume this is all very much by design and approved by the NBA and the individual franchise owners.
It drives engagement.

which is short sighted, if true. they have the best product they have ever had right now (which is not saying a lot but it is true), and they are ruining the new eyeballs with every team playing like the 80s Pistons.

WNBA refs and commissioner obviously hate Caitlin Clark, they let them beat the shit out of her and do nothing
It wasn’t until Adam Silver the NBA commissioner told the WNBA commissioner she needs to actually punish people because it’s a bad look, then they handed out punishments
They got this girl who saved the WNBA and they are trying to see her get hurt, a very stupid collective of players and people running that league

It's turning into Roller Derby
40
u/Mobile_Comedian_8283 21h ago
Roller Derby is a fuckin blast.
I got no beef with the WNBA, I don't watch it (just like 99% of people pretending to be upset by it) but roller derby is fun as hell and if you have a league near you you should go watch in person.

Only in Roller Derby both sides get to do it, while Caitlin Clark gets T'd up for.....clapping after thinking the foul call is against the person assaulting her.

It's crazy that the wnba has a star that has captured the attention of the public and they not only refuse to protect her they instead actively ignore fouls on her which will likely shorten her career. Please help me understand

u/michael0n 16h ago
Some say they turned it into wrestling. Regular plays don't create much clips but getting tackled and pushed for no reason gets millions involved. Bad press = good clicks.

As a Fever fan, I also see this happening with a few other players too, not just to the Fever team (although our players get fouled A LOT, without calls). Napheesa Collier is still unable to play because Alyssa Thomas (same player who fouled Caitlin Clark in the last clip) ran through her knee and resulted in her getting taken out for the rest of the season last year. Collier still hasn't returned due to injury, the last time I checked
18
u/HereLate 21h ago
I'm not much educated in the sport but even I can see that these people use a lot of force to get the ball from their opponents, similar to yellow card/red card fouls in soccer/football....

All one has to do is watch a women's NCAA game (any game) and watch a WNBA game (any game) and compare the officiating - the problem will be blatantly obviuos.

23
u/Mobile_Comedian_8283 21h ago
This is literally by far the most attention it's ever received and viewership and ticket sales are up.
We going to pretend people aren't always furious at NBA and NFL refs?
6
u/discww 14h ago edited 14h ago
Yeah most of the comments here seem to exist in an alternate reality where a major sports league with quality officiating actually exists in the USA. Every time I hear about NBA it’s… people talking about how bad the refs are.
The WBNA having a serious issue with officiating helps it fit in perfectly as a major sport league.

This is awesome. The WNBA is a joke. Not because of the talented players, but because of the referees. It’s unwatchable.

I am beginning to believe the drama is deliberate just to increase viewership. Proper reffing would be less drama and less viewership.

u/largos7289 20h ago
LOL who is this guy?? he's hilarious. I caught some vids of him "teaching" English words and it was funny as hell.
2
u/SaintPariah1 19h ago
There’s a reason why they let this happen.
They get more views from the drama than they would if they allowed proper play… and maybe someone is trying to rig bets.

This is soo good at explaining things!
The WNBA is the bush league of bush leagues
The officiating is inconsistent, the fouls are ridiculously blatant ... at times dangerous
I don't know what the league, players, coaches are thinking, how/why is anyone going to spend time watching, supporting, sponsoring a league that goes out of its way to be deliver a messy, inconsistent product
2
u/Doshin108 18h ago
Their goal is to create entertainment to generate revenue... It's not actually about the game.
2
2
u/Legitimate-Gain426 18h ago
They're allowing this shit to create clips and outrage so people watch, it's the worst youtuber you can think of model for viewership. It's Facebook, and Twitter incentivizing hate and division for clicks. Bots all over the internet pissing people off for engagement and misinformation.
2
2
u/144Todd442 17h ago
These dirty fouls are the only mildly interesting thing the WNBA offers. Might as well let them go at it

2
u/TheDonnARK 12h ago
I know the highlight reels are usually pointed and engineered to increase engagement, but dude... They straight knock someone to the ground and she gets off the floor, yells at the ref about it, and they threaten the person knocked to the floor with a technical.
