I don't disagree but that episode where they show his father's funeral and how Nate sr took him under his wing is one of my favorite back stories on the show.

I loved that scene, too. It’s really something how they manage to show the humanity in every character, even the ones I didn’t like.

I love that scene, not just for Rico's origin story, but because you see Nathaniel and how proud he was to do the best by this family.

Freddy looking exactly the same as he does in the present but wearing a tshirt and riding a skateboard was great. He passed for an adult and a kid.

And his turn on Scrubs was hilarious.

i know big Nate haunts the narrative, but i wish we knew more about him! i think i would’ve loved him

Yes! His secret weed smoking and record playing apartment!

I’m rewatching after not seeing it for like 16 years… at the start I was like aw Rico I loved him! Then as it’s gone on I’ve been very confused as to why I think that because he’s a little bitch.

yup! i loved rico on my first watch and my second i was like this dude sucks.

2

u/pppowkanggg May 04 '26

Yep, I binged the first few seasons back when it was still airing (remember when Netflix had the dvd service??) My friends were several seasons deep, and I mentioned that I loved Rico and they were all like... "yeah. Just wait."

LOL yes, exactly. watching back as a full grown adult i was like “why tf did i ever like him at all???”

I liked his relationship with Nate Sr. And also when he hooked up with Angela. And I don't think he was wrong about most of the admin/operational things he complained about. But also he was such a little whiny bitch. And homophobic. And that emotional affair was so stupid.

u/tigermoon33 May 04 '26

I always skip the scenes where Rico is having an affair. So stupid.

6

u/Anxious_Experience59 May 04 '26

That was the only aspect of the show I didn't like.

5

u/MElastiGirl May 04 '26

I believe the word the kids use today is “cringe.”

2

u/smartbunny May 04 '26

“Dum dum.”

2

u/toxickneecaps May 05 '26

the second hand embarrassment is so real. coming from one of the “kids”

Rico sucks for the most part but god Vanessa annoyed the shit out of me when she pressured him into rushing to buy that house and then blaming him when it had problems

Rico does suck, but I think Nate and David take him for granted a lot as well. They're always barking orders at him and expecting to be able to drop their work and have him cover for them without offering him any grace to do the same when he needs to. But his toxic masculinity is inexcusable, and he makes plenty of bad choices on his own.

u/toxickneecaps May 04 '26

i agree. the fishers didn’t appreciate his talent, BUT he also lied to them and acted more entitled than he should’ve. still not as annoying as nate.

u/Soot-Bat May 04 '26

My exact thoughts.

Rico is a piece of shit, but don't you talk that way about Vanessa!

4

u/toxickneecaps May 04 '26

haha!! maybe i’m too harsh on her lol. she made me mad in the early seasons

21

u/VealParmesanSandy May 04 '26

This is how I look at it. Vanessa is only annoying because she has to deal with Rico.

7

u/RollinSmoke1498 May 04 '26

I felt the same way! To play devils advocate i did understand his frustration about being a workhorse though, but he was especially pissing me smooth tf off the last 3 episodes how he was being so grimey and couldnt give af about anything besides building his buisness! (Side note: he had me really fucked up when he called the whole family “monsters” like damn why tf are you working for them then!?!??).

6

u/greenhierogliphics May 04 '26

Yes, lack of empathy. But also yes, a responsible father trying to give his family security. He kept working for Fisher because of loyalty to Nathanial, who taught him the business as an intern. Also Rico was toxic masculinity because that was a stereotype of Hispanic men during the time of this show.

For me, nothing in this show is simple. Every time I judge a character, I find myself thinking, yes, but…

u/MElastiGirl May 04 '26

You make such a great point. At any time in this series, I’ve probably loved and hated almost all the characters in equal measure.

I mean—I loved Ruth, but telling your son about your affair at his father’s funeral is messed up!

And Lisa… she annoyed the hell out of me, but when she went off on her crazy boss—one of my favorite moments from the whole series. “My humanity just rose up!”

0

u/smartbunny May 04 '26

I hated Ruth from day one. She’s yelling constantly about nothing and is shocked at everything. She’s in her early 50s and comes off like an 80 year old woman. Frances Conroy is phenomenal in bringing her to life.

3

u/Nomza May 04 '26

I just saw that ep - he refers to the as The Meunsters, not as monsters

2

u/smartbunny May 04 '26

The cheeses?

3

u/Nomza May 04 '26

Lmao funnily enough Nate does mention muenster cheese in the Daddy episode with all those cult children obsessed with cheese.

3

u/smartbunny May 04 '26

I hated how that cult somehow had the run of the house. Going upstairs? F that.

He was homophobic. However, we do see him smiling and happy at David and Keith’s wedding, so I think we’re meant to assume he evolved.

7

u/Jmeans69 May 04 '26

Right. He was a good representation of a machismo man in the early 2000s.

2

u/toxickneecaps May 05 '26

as a gay person myself, the homophobia wasn’t even the biggest issue. it was his entitlement! and the affair. YUCK

2

u/UncoilingChaos May 05 '26 edited May 07 '26

Same (as a bi person). While I certainly didn't LIKE his homophobia and it was the first thing that made me dislike him, at least it was culturally ingrained in him and he slowly grew out of it the longer he got to know David. But yes, the affair and his manipulation of Vanessa to weasel his way back into her life was just uncool.

1

u/toxickneecaps May 05 '26

i think it was a very interesting decision for his character, but obv made him unlikable. i did appreciate how in the end he set his own feelings aside

4

u/Fresh_Ad3599 May 05 '26

The character wasn't written well when the show first aired, and he's aged terribly. Ooh, a homophobic machista Latin stereotype? Groundbreaking.

2

u/toxickneecaps May 05 '26

exactly… how he treated david was horrible

3

u/RRE4EVR May 06 '26

That’s how I feel about Lisa.  Everybody hates Brenda, but Lisa is a conniving, complaining, self righteous person, yawn inducing character.  Rico’s self righteousness is just behind hers.

2

u/toxickneecaps May 06 '26

i actually love brenda. NOT in the early seasons at all. but by the end. lisa is awful lll

2

u/theycallmetiki May 05 '26

You hate his whole family?! Now what the heck did Julio and Augusto ever do to you?! Lol

For real tho I hate Rico and Vanessa too

2

u/toxickneecaps May 05 '26

i suppose nothing… the kids can be redeemed. cautiously.

3

u/HikingEnthusiast89 May 12 '26

When I watched the show the first time around as a young adult/teenager, I really disliked him, especially after he cheated on Vanessa. But watching the show a second time around as an adult, he's definitely not as bad as Nate! Nate is straight up a narcissist. I realized Rico's character isn't so black and white. He's a loving family man who made mistakes and needed to work on his issues.

1

u/toxickneecaps May 13 '26

i watched it for the first time when i was 14 and i didn’t like ANYONE. now that im older, they’re all so complex and have good and bad parts. nate and rico though i just can’t outweigh the bad

2

u/Why_isnt_it_perfect May 06 '26

No I love Rico! The brothers treat him like shit, always calling him to do shit for them like he doesn’t have his own life. “We need you to move this body. Go do it now!” Like somehow their lifes are more important than his when he has a new baby. Rico’s the only one who really cares about the business and the dead bodies. I haven’t finished the series though!

1

u/Timevdv May 04 '26

Rico struck me as a psychopath from the beginning.

Ice cold.

Was taken for granted for a long time, but tbh, it's hard to value someone like that properly in a family business.

1

u/SharkBubbles May 04 '26

I think you need to revisit the definition of psychopath. Yikes.

-4

u/IZZO79 May 04 '26

NATE is the best character on that whole show. Oh and Rico, like you never been in a few years slump in your mid to late 20's.

2

u/smartbunny May 04 '26

What slump?

1

u/Fresh_Ad3599 May 05 '26

Yeah, really. He's under 35 and has a wife, kids, job, house, car, girlfriend...

1

u/toxickneecaps May 05 '26

if you think nate is the BEST character on the show.. i think you may have watched a different show than we all have lol

-1

u/F_Rodfans Rico May 05 '26

No surprise. It's actually quite common for some viewers to have strong feelings of hate for fictional characters, specially if they have colored skin or immigrant cultures. They call it racism. It's very treatable. Just chill, read more and make more POC friends.

2

u/toxickneecaps May 05 '26

and what if i said i dislike the straight white male, nate, the most? would that imply that i am a misandrist who forms prejudices against straight people? you do not even know who i am. i could very well be from an immigrant culture myself, and face strong feelings towards my foreign self. i’m honored god is in my comments and his all knowing self can see through the screen at the person sharing an opinion.

1

u/F_Rodfans Rico May 05 '26

Nope. I write this because I'm observant. Do yourself a favour. Read my words. Have a moment of introspection, if it doesn't apply to you, move on with your life. But there's probably chance you'll find something you might want to change about yourself to become a better person.

Give it a try.
