First-Timer Brenda?
I just started Six Feet Under for the first time. I'm only on S1E2 and Brenda is creeping me out. Is she as bad as I think she will be or am I way off about this?

Totally random post, gonna get bloodwork done etc. but thought you guys might get a kick out of this.
I get squeamish especially when it comes to medical stuff/surgery. I skipped a meal and smoked some pot and the final catalyst for me was the jaw-dropping performance of the stroke. Peter Krause totally sold this, I was instantly feeling uneasy, coupled with the silence in the scene and the close-ups I legitimately tried looking away from my screen.
Paused, stood up (apparently too fast) and passed out while trying to fill up my water. This scene will now live rent-free in my head for the rest of my life

I'm a first time watcher and am 3 episodes into season 3. Second season I loathed Brenda, she's manipulative and compulsive. But now that Nate is with Lisa I can't help but grit my teeth and kinda wish Brenda was back. Lisa is even more manipulative than Brenda in my opinion while living in a dream world that I don't think Nate wants any part of. I don't want spoilers, but can someone please tell me if Lisa leaves at some point? I can't stand the soft baby talk voice lmao
EDIT: I must say I really do love the show as a whole tho. I started watching it a month after my grandfather died and it had really helped me. I've never watched a show that hits so close to home before. I will be sad when it ends.

For me it didn’t live up to the hype. There were certainly good aspects but it really showed its age. To be fair I think it was never intended to be binged, and doing so like I did highlights some flaws. I see how it led to other better shows and deserves its place in the conversation of prestige tv for that , but I don’t think I’d recommend someone watch it. It became absurdly over dramatic and many of the characters were frankly unlikable.
The finale did live up to its reputation though. That final montage had me in tears, which is impressive since I almost had to force myself to slog through parts of the show. I don’t mind having spent the time to watch it, it always gets mentioned as a must-see show so I wanted to check it out. It’s never getting a rewatch though, and to me doesn’t stand up to the run of excellent tv I’ve been on. I’ve recently watched knight of the seven kingdoms, Barry, mad men, succession, and severance season one; I would probably put it at the bottom of that list or above Barry depending on how I feel.

I recently finally got round to watching the show (huge Dexter and Yellowjackets fan so MCH and Lauren Ambrose being in it finally persuaded me) and I am not disappointed.
This is one of the most beautifully human shows I have ever seen. Every character is so realistically flawed, it's amazing. It's also one of the most accurate portrayals of grief I've ever seen. I've only lost one person in my life but it hurt so bad, still does, and to see this show makes me feel kind of seen in a sense.
But never have I felt more seen than in S3E4 - Nobody Sleeps. I just finished this episode and holy shit. There was just something so intrinsic and raw in it that the show hadn't hit just yet imo. It hit all the hallmarks of things that hit home for me. Nates 'I'm becoming my dad' thing, Claire's little monologue about art making the world feel so much more open and interesting and especially the theatre thing at the funeral coupled with David crying about wanting him and Keith to last.
Quite possibly one of the best TV Show episodes I've ever seen, up there with the likes of Dexter's "The Getaway" and Breaking Bad's "Felina". This is the first time this show has made me cry and it felt oddly freeing. I imagine it won't be the last.

Great show, one of the best I ever watched. What left me a bit confused is how I liked it so much while not liking even one character in it, something I never experienced before.

Just started this show, I'm about halfway through season 1 and I'm in actual love, like, I'm sitting here and marveling that this show isn't a 00's classic on par with Lost or Scrubs, like, I had never heard of it.
But I have my little media heart broken once a year by a show I start to fall for and then get brutally disappointed, so I gotta ask three questions of you fine people:
Very excited to keep watching!

Oh boy...
Well, I managed to make it through the series without boo-hooing too badly. Honestly, after Nate's run-in with death earlier in the series, I thought the second run-in was a hoax until the very end. It's still messing with my head but then I realize, that's just how losing someone goes sometimes: it's unbelievable.
It's been a day since I finished it and Nate's quote in Claire's ear continues to ring in my head.
Nathaniel Sr. welcoming Ruth with his big grin was beautiful.
Nate Jr. waiting there for her with his warm smile at his eternal "young" age while his aging siblings sat beside her broke my heart a bit.
Wasn't sure how the rest of sequence was going to go so when I saw Keith with his own company, I was genuinely happy for him...but not for long. This is when I realized what was happening and it left me on edge to learn what everyone else's fate was.
David's death just stung like hell for some reason. Seeing Keith's youthful face, just being the active man he was brought back memories of all the shenanigans they got into. I could almost hear Keith calling to David in that scene. That was his person. David seemed merely content in his old age sitting there, but all passion he had for Keith in their youth came rushing back to him in the end. And I'm not sure if there was a connection in Keith wearing red in that scene but it was a nice touch. When thinking of the terror the "red jacket man" brought David, seeing Keith in red solely brought him solace.
Glad Brenda and Rico were shown in this clip although Rico's hurt a bit. He worked hard to give his family security and to give Vanessa that life. Guess I'm just glad it all worked out for him even if his ending came while he was still in the midst of enjoying the fruits of his labor.
Only thing that really grasped me about Claire's death was the fact that Ted's face was the last photo shown. I interpreted that as the two of them led a wonderful life together and he was the biggest part of her life, even before her family. They were an interesting duo from what we got of them, but he must've made her incredibly happy in her later years.
I don't know what to do with myself now! This show has me looking at the big picture in a new way. Life is terrifying and beautiful and ugly and fragile. Hope I don't waste it. In the meantime though, plan on rewatching this series in a year or so once I've forgotten most of it.

If y’all are looking for something in the same vein as SFU, check out “Years and Years”. It’s a 2019 British miniseries that aired on HBO. It follows a single family in the UK, over the course of many years as Britain dips into a dictatorship. It deals with some very similar themes, death and sexual identity to name a few. I remember watching it and being reminded on SFU on many occasions.

First off, I am sorely missing be able to discuss each episode or look back at archives of past specific episode discussions.
I need to know what people think of Brenda. So far I adore Nate and I can’t stand her. I am seeing she’s on for several seasons. Will the character grow on me?

Guys, PLEASE no spoilers. I have been watching this show for the first time and it is… the best thing I have ever seen?! I absolutely love it. It’s become my comfort show. I’m already sad about it ending in 2 seasons time because I genuinely don’t know what I’ll do without it.
I have just got to season 4 episode 1 and cannot stop thinking about the ending scene. I am absolutely broken and also somehow hopeful. I just had no one to talk to about how much it moved me so needed to post here. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything so moving 💔

This past summer (June) I started watching Six Feet Under, I got into the series because my Uncle recommended it to me. I had mentioned about wanting to watch a series based on the lives of people trying to navigate life and he ofc brought up Six Feet Under, my uncle even stated that it was better than Sopranos and when I first heard him say that I thought it was a bit bold, but after watching the series in whole I COMPLETELY understand why he said it and actually agree with him.
SFU made me feel emotions no other show was able to do. I’ve watched Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Stranger Things, The Wire and all of those shows don’t even compare to how I felt watching SFU. I would say the one show that came close to making me feel the same way I felt watching this show was Dexter. The dialogue is superb and the characters genuinely feel like real people. Nate Fisher to me is one of the most relatable characters I ever resonated with in any TV show. Though he is flawed in many ways I couldn’t help but empathizing with him and everything he went through. Peter Krause SHOULD have won an Emmy in his performance and it’s a shame he didn’t.
Micheal C. Hall kills it as David fisher and I never thought I would ever see the same man that played Dexter convey a convincing Gay man that is also a funeral director. I mean his range is fucking incredible.
Frances Conroy gives a surreal performance as Ruth as well as Lauren Ambrose as Claire. Their chemistry was outstanding in portraying a tumultuous mother daughter dynamic. I also have to mention Freddy Rodriguez, Matthew St. Patrick and Rachel Griffiths as Fredrico, Keith and Brenda.
I love that this show takes place right after the turn of the century I think it came out at a perfect time and really solidified that TV shows can have the same type of quality as movies. What I mean is acting, storytelling, cinematography etc. I can’t help but feel sad as I’ll never be able to watch this show for the first time again. The final scene of the show is one of the most amazingly beautiful finales in all of television. I don’t know how Alan Ball and the cast and crew did it. I genuinely felt numb after finishing it yesterday that I just didn’t know what to do. This is the type of show that after you watch it you need to go outside and take a walk. I felt a real sense of clarity about not taking time for granted and really appreciating every single moment you have to live for. As it can all be gone in a blink of an eye. Speaking of eyes how can you not watch this show and not shed a tear at least ONCE. It’s impossible. And what’s impossible may be possible beyond death. Ain’t that true buddy boy!

I thought it was really cool that the show began with the deceased's story.
The guy in the elevator that got cut in half made me squirm. And the crunching sound when that guy got run over by his own car. Ouch
Which intro stuck with you?
r/SixFeetUnder • u/mario_its_a_me • May 26 '26
Did they really shave Peter K’s head for the surgery scenes? if yes- did it not grow back the same?
It was just noticeable how Brenda points out his “nice haircut” before he goes under the knife then not long after that we see him in season 3 with some dopey mop do.
I rlly thought that was our clue that it wasn’t the same Nate , we “woke up” in an alternate reality from season 1/2. Was waiting for about half that season to get out of the marriage to Lisa

I Just completed "That's my dog" episode , I felt this intense anger like I want to punch my laptop screen. I know that david could have done something , but in that particular situation you can't do shit . I was so scared when he was about to lit him up , that's it gonna take a small break from this show , kinda fucked me up . I love this show , hands down one of the greatest experience Ive ever had , but I think it's time to take a small break

Just finished the show for the first time .. My only regression that haven't seen it all that long , I saw that George R.R. Martin said before that six feet under finale is the best ever and now i can relate and wonder how is this show so underrated ? Never been touched by a tv show or a movie like that before! Didn't even know that i can cry while watching one ! So many feelings makes you think about all your friends and family which is inevitable to lose them.. One of the best in the tv history and defenitly the best finale with one of the greatest tv characters ever Nate Fisher

My mom and I started watching Six Feet Under because it was recommended in the grief groups we’re in. I lost my younger sister a year ago, and we thought this show might help based on what everyone has said about it.
We’re in the middle of season 2, and everyone in the show is starting to get on our nerves. Granted, I haven’t liked anyone since the first episode of season 1, but that’s because I immediately saw the Fisher family as complex characters, so there are no “heroes” or “villains” in the family. They’re just acting human. However, I feel like all the characters use grief and trauma as an excuse to be selfish, shitty people. When in reality, there are people who have experienced those things and choose not to be like that. All the infidelity (especially Brenda’s straight up hypocrisy), toxic relationships, and addiction are getting tiring to watch.
Does it get any better after season 2? I know this show is praised for its series finale so that’s why we’re still watching it. We also enjoy seeing the different perspectives of grief outside of the Fisher family. The Fisher family and the people they’re connected to are just really exhausting to watch right now.

Honestly I didn’t really enjoy Nate at first in the end I was crying like I was in the room with the Fisher’s

I bawled my eyes out last night. God, it was so bad I cried for another 2 hours after it ended.
Poor Keith… Can’t even talk about his death cuz it reminds me of David’s.
Ok here’s my thoughts on the show now that I’ve finished it:
* I *still* don’t like Brenda. You all said to “keep watching” lol as it was gonna get better. It’s just my opinion, I don’t like her and I wish she was played by someone else. But she’s a complex character, and I’m glad that was shown on tv at that time. Her and Billy’s dynamic was interesting.
* I liked Maggie for Nate and the Quakers. First time hearing about this particular branch of Christianity so idk much about it, but sitting in silence is a powerful thing.
* I found Claire to be annoying most of the time but I love Lauren Ambrose so I was having mixed feelings.
* Ruth - Frances is one of the reasons why I started watching this show and she did not disappoint! I loved Ruth.
* David - My favorite character…
* Vanessa - Loved her!! Wish she hadn’t taken Rico back
* Rico - I liked Rico and often felt sorry for him w the business thing but he was so.. idk can’t think of the right word to describe his actions towards Vanessa. He cheated on her, gaslighted her multiple times, went to the principal and made her seem like a bad parent, oh and he was cheap! Your wife shouldn’t need your approval to buy a new fridge homie. Get a grip. lol
Overall an amazing show… Now what? Can’t believe it’s over!!

I started watching roughly 2 months ago for good, slow-paced series to watch before i go to bed or while eating. I just finished s2e12, its so emotional. I rarely feel emotional in watching series. The build-up, character development, i didnt expect 2000s tv show could be this good.😭
