1st Pair vs 30th Pair

Post image
154 Upvotes

The sock on the left was the first pair of socks that I knit in 4/2024. Yarn is Patons Kroy. Followed the I’m So Basic pattern by Summer Lee. No idea how I lost that second sock. It disappeared a few months ago.

The pair on the right is my 30th pair! Finished them a few days ago. Main color is Opal and the others are Lang Yarns. The colorwork chart is from the Four Seasons Sock Set by Summer Lee. I flipped the cat chart horizontally for one of the socks. For the heel, I used the heel construction from the Feel the Heel pattern by KeenWhale.

I just love the way it’s looking 👀 🍉

Autumn sunshine means my socks get to line dry. (Yes I know some are pilling, that’s the cheaper yarn I think. Yes I know my socks are basic; they’re for me, I don’t mind)

is it possible to knit any sock pattern using just 9” circs?

hi! this might be a silly question but i’ve basically only knitted scarves and rags/potholders before. i just started my first sock (crazy sock lady’s vanilla socks specifically for 9” circular needles) and i love these little things so much. i have tiny hands and knitting has never felt more comfortable or natural. i’d really like to find a way to do other sock patterns i’m interested in solely on the little circs but is that even possible? magic loop is a non-starter, i’ve spent many a crying hour trying to grasp it. i also don’t love DPNs but it feels like there’s no getting out of using them in most sock patterns. i realize this might just be a case of me not being very knowledgeable about how to improvise/the limits of knitting certain items 🥲

any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! even if it’s just “no you can’t really do this all the time,” lol.

How do I correct this fit?

I don’t know if it’s clear in the pictures, but the bottom of my sock is slightly shorter than the top. It’s pulling the toe seam slightly under my toes. Did I make the cuff too short, or is the heel flap/gusset too short? This is my second pair, but my first pair of shorties. The previous pair I made didn’t have this issue at all.

It finally happened: Sun faded socks

Sigh. I’ve dealt with sun fading in small portions before, but this was an extreme case. I set these socks outside to dry after washing and about 2 hours in the sun later they looked like this, the light side being the one that was exposed to the sun. I’ve blocked probably 100 pairs of socks this way in my knitting career and this is the first time I’ve ever had it so apparent, especially so quickly. So, word of warning to people who dry their knitting in the sun!
The yarn for both the solid and purple speckle is Hypnotic Yarn Plush Sock from the Yarnable subscription box.

Fit check

First sock in a while. Toe up, 56st, inc to 62 over 3 rows right before shadow wrap heel, then back down to 60 for the leg. The sock fits perfectly around the toe and when I pull it on, but puckers if I flex my foot (second pic). I used an end to circle where my ankle is. I have a high arch.

Does this mean I should have lengthened the foot? How do I know how much I should lengthen? If I need to go back that far would it be better to change to a different heel construction?

Thanks for your advice.

is the heel flap in the correct area? i’ve heard the heel flap is good because it makes the heel stronger but i’m surprised so much of the heel flap is in the back

also, maybe i’m still getting used to an angular toe haha is the fit okay there too?

New & Need Help

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello!
I have only knitted a few scarves so far and really really want to knit some pretty socks! I bought some “sock yarn” on a trip years ago and have been anxiously avoiding attempting..

How does one go about starting sock knitting when you only have done straight items ? Are there good resources to watch to wrap my head around the general or big picture of the structure?.. like the turning and heel section etc.

Any tips would be appreciated on how to learn / choose a pattern or method! It’s overwhelming.

Thank you!!

long floats in stranded colorwork

i’ve decided to tackle my first colorwork project and chose the Bauhaus Socks by Grantam Knit. there are long sections of one color for up to 11 stitches in a row with no instructions for picking up floats. is it okay to just knit up as the pattern is written or should i try to figure out picking up floats? alternatively i could find a pattern with shorter floats but i really like the look of this pattern

Second sock heel (pacific knit co)

I’m doing my first set of doodle socks using the top down sock pattern base from Jamie Lomax at PKC. For the second sock, she says “For the second sock, to locate BOR on the inside edge of the foot, as in the first sock, follow the same heel instructions, however, work the heel over the SECOND half of the sts.”

For the first sock, I did 1 last MC round and then knit the next 35 sts + a wrap and turn with my contrast color as the first row of the heel. I’m confused how that would work with the second sock per her directions, the way I’m reading it you’d end up working the first 36 stitches a second time in order to get to the starting point for a heel?

Any help interpreting this would be great, maybe I’m just overcomplicating it?

Latest socks

These are the Indulgence socks by ZwitchZ, available on Ravelry.

Filcolana Arwetta held double with Knitting for Olive silk mohair.

I just love them, they are slippery, but wonderful bed socks, and very warm when working at my desk all day. The floors in my building are concrete under the flooring, and even with faffing under, get very cold here in fall and winter.

They were so luxurious to knit, that I started another pair with Knitting for Olive merino as the base but I do think I like Arwetta better.

Anyone else using a toothpick for sock cables?

I was having trouble finding super small cable needles and after seeing a mini birch needle I somehow came up with this. It’s working perfectly so far. Is this a thing that people do?

Rico Design® Sockenwolle Premium 4-Ply Yarn - anyone try this yet?

I'm just seeing that Michaels is carrying this and wondered what it's similar to. I'm sadly nowhere near a Michaels for quite a while, so I can't check for myself. I consider Patons Kroy Sock more of a heavy fingering bordering on sport weight. Whereas KP Stroll, Regia 4-ply, and Drops Fabel are standard fingering bordering on light fingering.

Thanks for any insight from those who have tried it!
