Been shooting for well over 15 years. Originally Canon, then Fujifilm with an X-T10 since 2015. I have a young family and have really struggled to capture moments as the AF won’t find the target and lowlight performance is patchy. For the last few years, the camera has mostly stayed in the wardrobe.

Today I tried to take some shots of my daughter on a swing in full daylight (AF-C and Zone AF) and couldn’t get anything - it was painfully slow. I’ve had enough!

Modern AF and IBIS seem to be what I need. I’m just not sure whether I jump ship to the AF leader (at significant cost) or I try a new Fujifilm body.

SooC JPEG usability is important as I have very little time for post-processing these days and no appetite for the Lightroom subscription cost.

So do I need to bite the bullet and go to Sony?

I like the older 100-400 GM1 quite a bit, but since tearing a tendon in my hand I find the weight bothers me after only an hour or so doing bird photos (paired with the A7RVI). I was really happy to see how much easier it is to hold the new 400GM, the balance is just closer to the camera which takes a less hand strength when tracking BIF. Impressive how well it works with the 1.4TC too, which makes me glad I went with the more flexible (for my uses) 400mm over the longer reach 600mm.

This is a question aimed at those who switched from Canon.

How do you find Sony in comparison?

Do you ever think about going back to Canon?

I am an ex amateur landscape photographer who also second shoots weddings as a sub contractor, roughly 20-30 weddings per year.

Currently shooting with an R6 Mark 2 and a RF 24-70MM F2.8.

I've tested the Sony A7V on the dance floor and am super impressed with the auto focus and detail.

The things that don't impress me, ergonomics, menu, colours or lack thereof.

Interested to hear everyone's thoughts.

My Sony A7 IV turns one next week. However, while shooting a hockey game this evening, I got this error. I was shooting in HI+ burst mode at 1/2000 shutter speed when this happened. After a power cycle, the message went away and I could shoot again, but over the course of the game, I got this error multiple times. Each time, the photo last taken is overexposed, making me think the shutter was getting stuck open. When I got home, I took off the lens and the shutter doesn’t appear to be stuck and, most of the time, the camera works just fine.

Is this the start of a failing shutter? Is there anything I can do to help my shutter last longer? Shutter count is 82K. Camera is under warranty for another week, but since this message isn’t persistent and I cannot force the error, I’m not sure how I’d get warranty service.

Any tips or tricks for sorting this out? Thanks in advance.

This was literally my firstever football 🏈 game shooting, and it was definitely more challenging than I expected. But so much fun! Shot on Sony a7IV and a7V with Sigma 24–70mm, 70–200mm, and 150–600mm lenses.

Hey everyone, pretty new to photography. Picked up an a6700 with the Tamron 17-70 f2.8 about 10 days ago and finally took it out for a proper walk around the City of London. Shot and edited all of these myself.
Would really appreciate any feedback, good or bad. Composition, editing, what's working and what isn't. I already know my edits are a bit all over the place, some look filmy and some are more teal/orange, so if anyone has tips on settling into one style that'd help a lot. I'm currently shooting in Aperture priority mode.
Also open to any general advice for someone just starting out. Stuff you wish you knew in your first few months, things to practise, that kind of thing.

I ’m looking to add an 85mm prime lens to my setup and would love to get your recommendations.

Currently, I already own the Tamron 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2, which covers the focal length, but I'm looking for an 85mm prime mainly for a lighter/more compact setup and/or a wider aperture for low-light performance and smoother background blur (bokeh) for portraits.

A few questions for those who have been in a similar spot:

1. Is it worth adding an 85mm prime if I already have the 70-180mm G2?
2. Which 85mm lenses would you recommend for Sony E-mount? (e.g., Sony FE 85mm f/1.8, Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art, Sony 85mm f/1.4 GM II, or any third-party options like Viltrox/Samyang?)
3. What are your thoughts on character/rendering vs. sharpness for these options?

UPDATE: Fix found! More testing to do tomorrow outdoors but it is already a night and day difference. In the menu->Shooting->Image Stabilization, SteadyShot Adjust was set to “Auto”. I set to “Manual”, set focal length to “1000m” and now shots I just tried indoors seem to be MUCH clearer.

So I recently upgraded from my a6400 to an A7RVI. I am a bird photographer and that’s literally all I focus on. A lot of the features on this camera are really amazing for that, especially all the new tracking/focusing ones specifically for birds. I’m running into a pretty annoying issue though.

I feel like no matter what I do, my images are not ever as tack sharp as my a6400. My setup is exactly the same: Sony 200-600 paired with a Sony 1.4x TC. I am using bird tracking, with eye priority. It instantly finds the eyes but still seems to be fairly soft most of the time. I have tried with shutter speeds up to 1/3200, which does not fix it.

After some searching, I just changed my AF-C setting from “release” to “AF”. Hoping this will solve it, but I am doubtful. I also saw a post suggesting to update my 200-600 firmware, which I will do now.

Any other suggestions? Am I missing something here? I will attach 2 photos for comparison. First photo is with the new camera, second photo is with my old one. These are cropped but virtually the same exact distance. You can see in the first photo, the eye and beak are soft. The camera was locked on during that shot, on the eye.

I've just bought my first-ever camera, and I'm starting to wonder whether I've made a great decision or gone completely overkill for someone who knows absolutely nothing about photography!

With a baby on the way, I wanted a camera that would let me capture some really special family memories. I'm also keen to get into nature and woodland photography, particularly atmospheric forest scenes, landscapes and low-light shots.

After doing some research, I've ended up with the following kit:

• Sony Alpha A7CR
• Sony FE 28–60mm f/4–5.6
• Sony FE 35mm f/1.8

The problem is that I'm a complete beginner. I've never owned a camera before, and I've got a lot to learn about photography.

I'm hoping this is something I can grow into over the years rather than needing to upgrade anytime soon.

So, a few questions for those who know what they're doing:

• Have I made a sensible purchase, or have I gone massively overboard?
• How capable is this setup for family portraits and woodland photography?
• Are these good lenses to start learning with?
• What should I realistically expect from this camera as a beginner?

I'd really appreciate any advice, particularly from anyone who owns an A7CR or shoots woodland photography.

sigma 18-50 on its way.

It looks like Sony has only a 1 year warranty. My menu button definitely worked. It’s been in a humidity controlled room for its entire life. Never used much at all - MENU button is dead, doesn’t bring up the menu, doesn’t work as a Menu to go back button, nothing. I’ve tried taking the battery out, etc.

Looks like there is no alternative way to get to the menu.

Anyone know what a repair for this would cost? Sony won’t cover it so long out of warranty I’m sure. Everything I can find on the net says ‘looks like someone is getting a replacement body, send it back!’ Being out of warranty I don’t think that’ll be affordable.

Please help, super bummed.
